Chapter 10
When Dick woke up, he found that there was a pair of eyes staring at him. "Hello Damian, is there a reason you are watching me sleep?" Dick sat up slowly, stretching a bit as he did so. It has been two days since the news was out that he was alive and now he was living in his old home. To say that the youngest was not happy was an understatement. It was only day two, he knew that that clearly was not enough time for the young bird to warm up to him, but it still he wished that he would have at least made some headway. Unfortunately for him, the boy was just as stubborn as his father.
"Why are you here? We do not need you here." Was all Damian said, trailing Dick as he got ready for the day. "We do not need a circus freak."
Dick sighed slowly, the words stung a little, but he did not let it show. Instead, he turned and gave the boy a smile, which was not the reaction that Damian wanted. "I am sorry you feel that way, but I need to be here to help Bruce, even if I am not welcomed."He patted the child's head, bending his legs so he was at eye level. "I have been away for far too long, and like it or not, I am staying." His smile dropped to a straight line to show that he was being serious. There was nothing in this entire world could keep him from being at his mentor's side.
Damian glared at the teen. How dare he stay here. He was not the heir, sure he tolerated Drake, to an extent, but that disgrace was never a threat to his position. Neither was Todd. But, the original Robin, the boy his father brought in from the circus and trained by hand..There was obviously favoritism.Damian followed behind Grayson, keeping at his heels and taunting him the whole way to the breakfast table. Drake and Todd did not appreciate the harassment he was giving the newest resident of their home, and before Damian knew it, he was in an all out fist fight with Tim.It took both Dick and Jason to pull them apart.
"This is why I never come here." Jason sighs heavily, sitting at the breakfast table. "Matter of fact, I am leaving right after breakfast. I've had enough 'family time' for a while."
"It would not be as fun here without you." Dick joked lightly. Blaming himself slightly due to the fact the fight was about him. If he was the one tearing this already broken family apart, maybe he really should not be here like Damian said.
"This is not your fault Dick, Damian is just a brat." Tim said as if reading Dick's mind.
Dick winced slightly. Drake was definitely an observant one. He was about to reply, but Bruce had entered the dining room, sitting at the head of the table and opening the morning paper as if nothing just happened. Dick held his tongue as did the rest of the boys as breakfast was served to them.
After a very silent and awkward breakfast, Dick excused himself to the batcave. He needed to find out what was on that flash drive. He did not tell any of the others what actually went down there in Cadmus, not because he didn't want to, but because he couldn't. Everything was jumbled with his memory, he remembered bits and pieces..but most of the time he questioned his memories. They were blurry and it bits and pieces and days were missing where no matter how much he focused, all he would gain was a headache. He did remember first waking up after his memory of death where he was lying on a cold metal table. The lights were too bright for him to see anything, but the feeling of pain was unbearable and the voices murmuring in the background were ringing in his ears. It was a brief memory, but it was the memory that haunted him as he went on living in that cell room that his revival was not a natural one at all. Perhaps being secluded for the years had altered his perception of time, but that is to be expected he supposed or it could be he is mentally blocking the memories..that is also a possible. He sat down at the bat computer and plugged in the flash drive. Drake was not kidding, it was completely scrambled. Even with his expertise in hacking and decoding, it would take days to even get a few bits. Dick groaned and rubbed his temples. Why did he think this was going to be simple, it was never simple. He typed up code onto the screen, trying to place the debris in some sort of order. But it was like putting a puzzle together without even knowing what the final image even looks like. If he asked bruce about going back to investigate CADMUS once more, he most certainly would deny the request. For now, this is all he could work with. In a few days he would ask Bruce if he could get the League to investigate if he could not. Though Dick strongly remembered Bruce's dislike for involving others with his city..and his Robins. He would deny that request to. Maybe he could get wally to snoop around for him discreetly. What are friends for if not for sneaking into creepy labs to find out information on their friend thought to be dead for years. Totally. But if the others find out, he would be in even more trouble and he would drag his friend into so shark infested waters with him. No, he would have to find out this on his own.
"This is going to be harder than I thought." Dick mutters to himself. He could not let himself get obsessed with this, he needed to move on just like the rest of the bat family with his return. But the gut feeling that there was more to his resurrection churned his stomach and drove him insane just thinking about it. He needed to know why..of all the people to resurrect, why him? That's the million dollar question he supposes.
