I did not like Mary Pearcey. She was always around the Gregory household and so I conversed with her often - but not through my own choice. I was a gentleman as I should be and was never arrogant or rude when in her presence but only because I knew that it would be improper to show my true feelings about her. All I knew was that something didn't sit right with her - her story was wrong; I would prove it. I remember how much she disliked Miss Louise before she married Mr Gregory; I know that she had a strong hatred for Mary Jane Kelly whom was favoured by my companion, William Burke. Why become close friends of the family that you disliked so strongly? Why leave the house of your lover the night of his death? I would find out what she was hiding and would expose her to the family if it came to it - I would not let her ruin the family whom I considered as my own.
As I thought about this a strong breeze welcomed a light Spring shower to the streets of London and I walked home along the Thames in silence. Burke was with Mr Gregory asking for his blessing; I had no doubt that he would gain it. Burke was everything a woman could want in a husband: handsome, strong, hard-working and loving. In all our years of companionship I had never known Burke to do wrong to a woman - or to anyone unless it was a harmless prank. In our youth the two of us had been quite the terrible duo; we were always laughing and horsing around the streets - everyone knew us as 'Burke and Hare - Brilliant and humorous'. Together we had the best childhood; despite the poverty ridden, grimy streets of London the two of us discovered that your social class determined nothing but where you lived - it didn't set your future and it didn't make you a different person.
