Harry Gregory

A week after our dinner with Burke, Hare and Miss Pearcey I found myself sitting in the pub with the two men who had become good friends of my daughter. The three of us had bonded massively over the past few years in which William Burke had been courting Mary Jane Kelly and for some reason I felt that tonight, over drinks in the pub, he would ask my blessing. Hare must have known what his friends plan was for he made his apologises and left us alone at the beer stained table to head home. For a moment all was silent until Burke confidently asked me for my blessing so that he could propose to my grown daughter; before I could even give it to him he began listing reasons as to why I should give it to him. There were several reasons and I hadn't the heart to quieten him and so I allowed him to finish what he was saying. Some of his arguments made me chuckle but I didn't dare show this in fear of hurting the nervous lad...

1) I am nothing like the Ripper or the Hangman (of course I knew this after having met him many years before)
2) I will always care for your daughter (I had always trusted that he would)
3) I am not with your daughter for you money sir (he had his own small amount and wasn't like the kind of lad who would take a young woman for granted)
4) I love your daughter (well if you didn't you wouldn't be marrying her now would you my boy?)

When he was finally finished with his many reasons I stood, patted him firmly on the shoulder and welcomed him to the family. Together we proposed that he would ask Mary Jane that night to be his wife. I could positively assure him that she would say yes; not through force but through choice and love...
