Elizabeth

Mary cried and cried in my arms as I pulled my cloak tightly around us as protection from the bitter evening wind. Harry and Jack would be arriving soon to take Jane, Mary and I to the safety of Harry's large family home around the corner; it was times like this that I was grateful for Harry's small fortune. It had been decided, two weeks before,  that as soon as Jane had recovered fully from her fever we would all shelter in the comfort of Harry's home where we would be protected from James Hammond.

There was no denying that I was scared - scared of leaving the place where I had grown up; scared for my life, Jane's life and now Mary's life too. Who thought that two and a half weeks after child birth I would be moving into Harry's home in fear of my life? I watched from the top of the stairs as Jack embraced Jane at the door before ushering her inside and laying a light kiss on her forehead. Both men were wet from the downpour outside and helped to pull the hoods of our cloaks over our heads before we turned out the lights of the bakery. Even after two weeks Mary had begun to gain weight and I struggled to keep her balanced on my hip for the entire journey. For the group that we were, the five of us moved swiftly sticking to the growing shadows as the sun dipped low beneath the horizon; I hoped that we would arrive at the house before James found us.

Soon enough we had reached Harry's home and I couldn't help but stare up at the white structure in awe. His home was nothing like ours; to me it painted the perfect picture of a palace that I imagined to be only in existence in fairy tales. Jane too smiled up at the house in disbelief and relief as the rain grew heavier in the street; inside the house was grander than I expected and already I could imagine my new life forming right before my eyes. A butler came and took our rain spotted cloaks and the men ushered us into the large drawing room to our right. The stone floors felt cold beneath my burning feet and the fire crackled in the fireplace, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere to the entire room. Jane and I sat ourselves on the floor in front of the two armchairs by the fire and rested our heads against the men's legs. Mary gurgled cheerfully in my arms and I noticed that everyone was gazing at my child with warm loving eyes.

Warm tea was brought to us all by a pretty, young maid and we sipped at the warm liquid that calmed and reassured us all. By the time we had reached the end of our drinks Mary had fallen into a deep sleep. Seeing her in a peaceful dream, Harry and I retired to bed with my sister and Jack following shortly behind us. Before our arrival Harry had already helped Jack to become accustomed to the house but it was clear that the upper class aspects of the place had him as entranced as the rest of us.

That night we all slept better than we had any other night over the previous two weeks and nobody stirred...not even Mary.
