Elizabeth

Smiling cheerfully I embraced my fiancé as he stepped through the low doorway to our quaint kitchen; as soon as he released me Jane was in the arms of her future brother in law. In the doorway stood Caroline, my twin sister, looking blankly at Harry's shoes and avoiding all forms of communication with both him and me.

After everyone had quietened down I sat myself beside Harry at the table and found myself entranced by his large brown eyes much like I had been when I first encountered him at the bakery. Once we were all seated Carolina separated herself from the doorway and dropped a copy of the day's paper on the table in front of us before leaving the room. Glancing down at the headline I saw that the Hangman had butchered another girl the night before. Looking away I hoped that my baby would never witness these brutal murders and that she would never even have to grow up in a world where there was still a murderer at large in the streets of London.

I don't know what lead me to think that my baby would be a girl but I continued to believe it all the same. I studied Jane's face as she scanned the paper and wondered how I could ever be a good mother when I had to leave Carolina to raise Jane after our parent's deaths.

These thoughts, that had been rattling through my head all day, began to slip away as Harry's strong hand intertwined with mine; he helped me up from my chair and bid my sister goodnight as he lead me up the stairs to my room. The two of us retired to my bed for the remainder of the night but I couldn't sleep in fear of the Hangman being at my window...
