My Daughter No Longer
I awoke to little Tinaraviel crying. She was hungry and so I fed her. When she was finished I held her so I could look at her better. She had my blue eyes and also brown fuzz atop her head. I kissed her forehead and hugged her, gently, to my chest. There was a soft knock at my door and I bade the knocker to enter. Aragorn and Arwen entered. Aragorn sat in a chair next to my bed and Arwen sat on the bed.
“How are you feeling, Legolas?” Arwen asked.
“Tired. Very tired. But more relaxed.”
“That is about to change,” Aragorn warned. “It was the same with Eldarion.”
Arwen laughed lightly and looked over Tinaraviel, “She’s beautiful, Legolas.”
“Thank you.”
They stayed for a while longer and played with the baby and spoke with me. Soon, breakfast was brought in for the three of us and we ate. It was possibly one of the last moments I would spend with Tinaraviel as a daughter for many, many years.
~
Months later, when Tinaraviel was no longer breast-feeding, Aragorn, Arwen, and I traveled back to Minas Tirith. Tinaraviel was gold the whole trip. When I walked into my room in the palace I saw a cradle placed next to my bed. Tears sprung to my eyes. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around and there was Aragorn. He smiled at me.
“It’s Tinaraviel’s bed, Legolas,” he said, softly.
“It should not be in my room,” I replied, matching his tone.
“Whatever do you mean?”
I turned around and placed Tinaraviel in his arms and answered, “She is your daughter, my King. She belongs with you.”
“Legolas, what…?”
“She belongs with you,” I interrupted. “Aragorn, she was conceived out of wedlock, and you are married. What would your people say? She was born when you and Arwen were not here, and looks like she could have been born from you two. The people of Gondor will accept her if they think she was born from their King and Queen. And even if it’s alright for a King to have a concubine or two, they would call it witchcraft and devilry that she was born from two males.”
Aragorn didn’t know what to say, “Legolas….”
“For her sake Aragorn, I give her to you and Arwen.”
“But will you not miss her as your own child?”
“Perhaps. But I am one of your officials, am I not?”
“My advisor.”
“Yes. I will be around enough to watch Tinaraviel grow. We may even be close friends. But I cannot call her my daughter, if only to keep her safe. Please, Aragorn?”
Aragorn was silent. He looked at the sleeping child in his arms.
“I will do as you ask, Legolas,” Aragorn said after a few moments.
“We will take good care of her,” Arwen said from the doorway. Aragorn and I jumped at her voice and she walked over. “I will treat her as my daughter Legolas. I promise she is loved. And with you around so much, I think you will become another parent to her anyways.”
I smiled and kissed Arwen on the cheek as a tear fell from my eyes, “Thank you, Arwen.”
“You are like my brother, Legolas. How could I do otherwise?”
I smiled at them. I knew they would do well raising Tinaraviel alongside Eldarion, who was only two. I indeed watched Tinaraviel grow. She took to calling me “Uncle Legolas” as Eldarion had. Many years went by and a pain steadily grew in my heart as I watched her grow, knowing she would never hug me and call me “Father” as she might have. I wasn’t jealous of Arwen. I couldn’t be. This had been my choice. If they were happy, then I was happy. But the sadness wouldn’t go away.
