Chapter 30
I returned back to my room, turning the radio up a little more. I was disgusted in Caden. Had he really just slept with me because he wanted Jason and I to break up?
I didn’t care for the motive behind that.
I would have preferred for him to have slept with me accidentally because of our drunkenness.
Not this.
I wanted to call Jason and tell him this, but I knew he wouldn’t care. I was just as much at fault as Caden was. If not more.
I had royally screwed myself over.
I rolled onto my back, staring at the ceiling. I wished that I could go to sleep and never wake up.
There was a knock on my bedroom door, and it didn’t take a genius to figure out who it was.
“Go away” I said loud enough for him to hear on the other side.
“Please, can I come?” Caden asked quietly.
“No.”
He opened the door anyways.
I chucked a pillow at him, rolling so that my back was to him. Caden dodged the pillow, walking over to me. He sat down on my small bed, staring at me.
I glanced at him, quickly moving my eyes away.
“What part of ‘go away’ don’t you understand?” I hissed.
“The part where you don’t let me explain myself.”
“You explained yourself very well that night.” I mumbled
“Well clearly my explanation wasn’t good enough.”
“Please, Caden, enlighten me.” I snapped, rolling onto my back. I crossed my arms, my eyes trained on the ceiling.
“I always try to stay friends with the girls that I uh… bang” he said for lack of a better word. “I’m not heartless, I actually like them. And I don’t want it to be awkward between us especially considering I’m your babysitter.”
“So?”
“I’d like your permission to let me talk to Jason.”
“What? No! Why? No—absolutely not--!” I said, cut off by Caden’s hand over top my mouth. He leaned over me, pressing a finger to his lips.
“You’re too loud.” He said, keeping his hand there, “Now let me explain myself.”
I couldn’t say anything because of his hand.
“Whether or not you believe me, I do feel bad for being the cause of the break-up. Yes, I would rather you be single so we can fool around.”
I narrowed my eyes.
Caden grinned innocently, “But I’ll tell him I got you drunk and slept with you while you were highly intoxicated. I don’t know if it’ll help.”
I raised an eyebrow suspiciously, pulling his hand away from my face. “Are you being serious?”
He nodded.
I bit my lip, “I don’t know if I can trust you to do that. How do I know you aren’t just screwing with me?”
He moved his body so that he was laying half on top of me. Caden slipped his hands to cup my face, tilting so that our eyes met.
Caden leaned in quickly, gently pressing his lips against mine. I closed my eyes as he moved his lips against mine, keeping it soft and tame. I wrapped my fingers around his wrists, holding him to me. Caden’s fingers slipped back only to wrap themselves loosely in my hair.
Caden pulled away slightly. I opened my eyes only to meet his in an intense look. Caden didn’t move his body, allowing our noses to just barely brush each other.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my heart.
“I already screwed you” He smirked gently, “Now I’m being serious.”
“Caden… I…”
“Listen, I’ll put him on speaker phone and everything.” He insisted. “I just wanted you single, not like this.”
I bit my lip, looking away.
Caden pecked my lips, earning my attention again.
“Fine.”
He pulled back so that I could sit up. Caden grabbed my wrist, quickly leading me out of my room. I ended up leaving the radio on once again as he led me down the stairs and into the dark living room.
Caden seemed a little too excited for this, but I brushed it off.
He sat me down on the couch, pulling out his cell phone from his pocket.
“What’s his number?” Caden asked, fingers ready to type it in.
I gave it to him from memory, my heart aching with each digit.
It rang three times before Jason picked up.
“Uh.. hello?” He asked, clearing his throat after.
I opened my mouth to speak before I remembered that I wouldn’t be. Caden met my eyes for a brief moment before he spoke.
“Hey, Jason right?” Caden asked, trying to sound casual.
“Yeah…. Who’s this?”
“It’s Caden.”
“C-Caden?” Jason stuttered, sounding as if he was choking on something. I brought my fingers to my lips, concerned.
“Yeah, Mason’s babysitter?”
“I know who.” Jason’s voice had turned monotonous as he tried to hide the fact that he was enraged, “What do you want?”
“I called to apologize.” Caden said, meeting my eyes. I looked away quickly.
“Did Joey set you up for this? Cause I don’t want to hear this sh—”
“She’s not around.”
“Then how’d you get my number?”
“Jacked it off her phone.”
“Then why does it sound like I’m on speaker phone?” He growled.
“What are you talking about?” Caden asked, trying to play it off. “You’re not on speaker phone.”
“Whatever. Look, if you’re just going to waste my time then I—”
“Hold up.” Caden sighed, looking down at the phone in his hand. “Look, Jason, I know we’re not exactly on good terms, but Joey’s a wreck right now.”
I shoot him a look. I didn’t want Jason to know how badly I was taking our break-up. Caden rolled his eyes at me, but continued talking.
“I don’t like seeing her like this.” Caden said “Yeah, I think she’s really cute and yeah, I didn’t like the idea of you two dating. So I brought her to a party and got her drunk. I didn’t expect to sleep with her, but it happened.”
“Don’t rub this in my face.” Jason growled.
“I’m not trying to. All I’m saying is that she protested at first but once I got one beer into her, it was a lot easier to get more in. I’m sure you know how light of a drinker she is, what with having known her for so long.” Caden said. He paused, letting it all sink it.
Jason didn’t say anything, waiting for Caden to continue.
“Anyways, I take full blame for sleeping with her. She wasn’t in a good state of mind and I took advantage of h—”
“Damn right you took advantage of her! She was fucking drunk!”
“Look, I’m sorry.” Caden took a deep breath, calming himself down. “Just don’t blame her for this. She feels awful about it and it hurts me to see her this way.”
Jason paused for a moment.
“You still there, Jason?” Caden checked.
“Joey’s sitting here listening, isn’t she?” He asked quietly. His voice had changed. It was almost like it was…worried.
Caden glanced at me. I quickly shook my head ‘no’.
“Yeah, she’s sitting across from me.” Caden moved the phone towards me, “Say hello.”
“Hey” I said quietly, trying to not let my voice crack.
“Joey.” He breathed.
“Yeah?”
“Is he serious?”
“Yes.”
“I love you baby, but I don’t think I can trust you.”
“Can we at least stay friends?”
He hesitated. “Maybe someday we can be friends again.”
“I love you, Jase.”
“Love you too Joey.” He sighed, “I just need some time. I… You told me yesterday. It hurts, honey, and I need some space.”
“I understand.” I bit my lip.
“Bye Joey.”
“Bye.”
Jason hung up.
Caden dropped the phone onto the couch cushion, pulling me closer to him. He held me against his side, letting me rest my head on his chest.
I didn’t know how long we stayed like that. Caden didn’t say anything keeping me close. I knew this was wrong. I should’ve been mad at him. I should’ve at least kept my distance from him.
But I didn’t want to.
I needed someone to just hold me and that’s exactly what Caden was willing to do. He didn’t speak, didn’t judge. He just held me.
For once, I was glad that he was here.
I was grateful that he had called Jason. I knew Jason well enough to know that it wasn’t going to do much. He needed space. He needed time to forget some of the hurt I had caused. I knew that interfering wouldn’t help.
Jason wouldn’t care that Caden had apologized.
I did.
It was nice to know that Caden felt sorry for this. It softened the blow from the initial discovery that he had wanted this.
Caden pulled my face towards him, rubbing his thumb underneath my cheek.
I pulled my fingers to my face, not aware that I had even been crying. He grinned slightly, flicking my nose.
I scrunched up my face, pulling away.
“Thanks, Caden.” I smiled, standing up. He stretched out on the couch, shrugging his shoulders.
“Night, Pumpkin.”
I turned, heading back up to my room.
Mason was still sound asleep, oblivious to all the drama that had just occurred. I swear that kid could sleep through an earthquake. I let out a small smile, shutting the door behind me.
I turned the radio off, glancing at the clock before I lay in bed.
It was nearly midnight.
A faint noise sounded, causing me to sit straight up.
My phone.
I got up, hunting down the noise.
“Hello?” I asked, not recognizing the number.
“Hi is this Carter Johnson? This is Steve Lewis calling from Sacred Heart Hospital.”
“Uh… yeah this is she. Is something wrong?” I asked, lying. I was too worried to care that I had just lied, or that he had gotten my number instead of my mother’s.
“Chase just had a heart attack. You’re the emergency contact. We’d request you come down immediately.”
The phone fell out of my hands.
