Chapter 27
Marinette was caught off guard when the doctor had addressed her by her secret title. She wondered if Adrien had blabbed her secret to Doctor Fuu while she was unconscious, and if so, who else did he tell?
"Adrien," said Doctor Fuu. "Do you mind giving us a moment?"
Adrien nodded. "Sure." He rose from the bed and planted a kiss on Marinette's forehead. "I'll see you later," he smiled before leaving the room and closing the door.
Doctor Fuu made his way to Marinette's bed, when he placed his medical bag and began to unpack his instruments.
"So you know about my secret too, huh?" Marinette asked him hesitantly, her eyes following his motions.
"Yes, but I knew you were the Lucky Charm from the moment I saw you," he answered. He picked up his stethoscope before saying, "Is it alright if I check your heartbeat and pulse? I want to make sure the medicine worked."
Marinette nodded, allowing Doctor Fuu to examine her heart. He then checked her pulse, making sure it wasn't too fast nor too slow. Marinette thought she would feel uncomfortable letting him hold her hand the way he did, but she found herself almost being comforted by his touch. He possessed a peaceful vibe and handled her very gently. Once he finished, he examined her lungs, her throat, and her eyes...making sure nothing was infected or damaged.
At last, he placed his stethoscope back into his bag smiling kindly at Marinette before sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Well, my dear," He said to her, "I happy to say that you are on the path of becoming completely healthy."
"Thank you for everything," Marinette smiled gratefully.
"You're welcome. But is it okay if I ask a question?"
Marinette nodded reluctantly, hoping his question wasn't anything too personal.
"Why did you refuse to take proper precaution while you were sick? You could've died from that sickness if I hadn't given you treatment."
Oh...that. Marinette sighed before answering, "It's a long story. I know it wasn't the best decision, but I was very stubborn during the time because..." she paused, running her index finger along the bed sheet's floral border design as she searched her brain for the right words to say, "with all of these sudden changes and problems appearing in my life-- like finding out I'm the long lost princess or being part of a master criminal's evil plan-- overwhelmed me. I kind of gave up living, I guess."
"What motivated you to keep living?"
"Adrien," replied Marinette.
Doctor Fuu nodded, showing Marinette that he understood. "Most people would've already died if they were in your condition," he said gravely.
Marinette chuckled. "I guess I'm very lucky that I survived, huh?"
"Actually," he told her, "I have a different theory."
"Which is?"
"Well, if you didn't already know, I'm actually the royal family physician, and I have been researching the mystical powers of the lucky charm and it's properties," Doctor Fuu explained. "And one thing I've found out is that the lucky charm is constantly evolving. You used to be able to heal and grant youth with your hair, correct?"
"Yes..."
"And Adrien had told me how, even though he cut your hair, you were still able to heal him with your hands?"
"Yeah..." Marinette said thoughtfully, the memory replaying in her mind. "All I can remember is feeling a powerful surge of energy flow through me, and when I touched Adrien, that energy somehow transformed into millions of sparkling ladybugs. And then they landed on Adrien's wound and all of a sudden light shone from everywhere. Then it all disappeared and I blacked out."
Doctor Fuu stroked his beard. "Here's my theory: while the lucky charm is able to give you the ability to heal, it also strengthens your immune system, which is why you were able to survive the sickness for so long. Also," he stopped stroking his beard and met Marinette's gaze, "It has made you more powerful."
"Is that something to worry about?" Marinette asked, worry etched in her voice.
"I don't think so...not for now anyway," Doctor Fuu reassured her. "But I would advise keeping this confidential until we can figure out more information regarding this matter. I also advise not using your power anymore unless you are in a situation that requires immediate action-- like for example-- a companion being seriously injured."
Marinette nodded. "Okay. I'll make sure no one else knows."
Doctor Fuu beamed. "Good. Now," he asked her gently, "are you ready to meet your parents?"
~~~~~~~~~~~
Marinette paced back and forth, her mind in a frenzy and heart pounding violently against her chest. For the one thousandth time, she smoothed out the new outfit she was wearing-- a floral yellow dress that flowed at her feet, and patted her head to make sure her midnight-colored hair was still in place. She nervously wrung her hands together, wishing the horrid feeling of anxiety that seemingly consumed her would go away.
Adrien was casually leaning against a wall, watching her go into complete freak-out mode with a smile on his face. His sun-kissed hair was washed and neatly brushed, and he wore a handsome navy blue suit for the occasion. He wasn't a fan of fancying up, but he knew that this meeting was very special to Marinette, so he decided to look his best.
Also, he was hoping to leave a positive impression on her parents. After all, she was the princess.
After five more minutes of watching Marinette pace back and forth, and becoming dizzy in the process, he sighed and whistled to get her attention.
Marinette stopped abruptly in the middle of the room and froze, obviously started from his whistle. She then turned her head to find Adrien laughing quietly to himself.
"That wasn't funny," she grumbled with a pout.
"Oh please," he chuckled. "You should see your face. You looked like someone just asked you if you wanted to eat grass."
Marinette tried to resist the urge to laugh, but failed miserably.
Both of them were standing in the royal throne room of the Ladybug palace, waiting for the King and Queen to make their appearance. This was Marinette's first time entering the palace (besides living here temporarily as an infant) and everything, from the marble walls to the windows that reached several feet enchanted her.
When she and Adrien were brought to the royal throne room and were told to wait by the guards, feelings of worry and unease began to take the best of her. She was actually going to meet her parents, her actual parents, for the very first time. The mere thought of it worried her to no end.
Presently, Adrien straightened himself before walking towards Marinette and placing both hands on her shoulders with a reassuring smile. "You should relax. Everything is going to go fine, okay?"
"But what if it doesn't go fine?" Marinette blurted anxiously. "What if they don't like me, or think that I look strange or something? What if they think that I'm pulling a prank or messing with their emotions? What if--"
"Shh..." Adrien place a finger on Marinette's lips. "Marinette, just trust me, okay? Everything is going to be okay, your parents are going to love you, and your definitely not the prankster type."
Marinette removed Adrien's finger with a mischevious smile. "Who said I couldn't pull a prank or two?"
"I say you can't...because you can't" Adrien replied with a blank expression on his face.
Marinette shook her head in amusement. "Are you saying that you don't have faith in me?"
"Oh, I have plenty of faith in you...just not in you being a prankster."
They both laughed.
"Oh, I've been meaning to ask you," said Marinette. "remember when we caught butterflies during the Miraculous Flight and we made wishes before letting them free?"
"You're asking that as if that memory isn't already imprinted on my mind for all eternity."
Marinette chuckled. " Good. You remember. Now do you remember the wish you made?"
Adrien nodded. "Yeah"
"What was it?"
Marinette's question caused him to blush profusely, and he removed his hands from her shoulders and casually shoved them in his pockets and cast his gaze downward in embarrassment before mumbling, "Nothing..."
"Oh, come on," Marinette persisted. "You can tell me."
"Nope."
"Why not??"
"Because it's embarassing," he admitted.
"It's probably not even that embarassing," said Marinette. "You're probably just being dramatic-"
"A croissant, okay?!" Adrien blurted, his whole face turning the color of a bright tomato. "I wished for a croissant."
Marinette bursted out laughing. "A croissant? Really?"
"Don't judge me, okay? Anyway, what was your wish?"
Marinette took Adrien's hand in hers and smiled. "I wished that if I ever decide to go off on crazy adventures, you'll always be my escort."
Beaming, Adrien bowed to her with a dramatic flair. "Always, Princess," he said lovingly.
They shared another beautiful kiss before being interrupted by one of the palace guards, who had entered the throne room to inform the couple that His Majesty and his wife were now coming in.
A sudden wave of emotions began to wash over Marinette. She shared a glance with Adrien, his eye telling her that this was it.
The moment she had longed for had finally arrived.
The guard stepped away from the doorway, allowing the King and Queen to enter. They both walked in, King Tom donning his majestic robes and Queen Sabine in her flowing gown. Marinette's heart skipped a beat when her eyes met the Queen's, a strange feeling of nostalgia enveloping her. Queen Sabine's face was like a lost memory her mind was trying so hard to hold tight to.
Sabine, on the other hand, felt as if her chest would explode with the thousands of emotions she was feeling. She slowly kept walking to Marinette, almost finding it impossible that her daughter, the piece of her soul that had been taken from her for 18 years, was now standing in front of her in the flesh.
Neither one looked away from the other's gaze when Sabine finally stood directly in front of Marinette. Sabine slowly lifted her hand to Marinette's cheek, as if making sure she was actually there and not a dream. The warmth from her mother's touch brought tears to Marinette's eyes, and both women immediately started to cry tears of joy. Sabine pulled her child into her arms, and Marinette wished with all her heart that this moment would never end.
Words alone couldn't even describe the immense amount of ecstacy and elation that overwhelmed her.
Tom wrapped his wife and daughter in his huge arms, fighting his own tears of joy that threatened to stream down his face.
At last, they were all together as one family, restrengthening the bond they had created years ago.
Adrien smiled at the reunion, keeping his distance so as to not ruin their family moment. He didn't know when, or how, or why....but somehow he was pulled into the group hug, sharing the warmth between Marinette and her parents.
The next day, the kingdom celebrated the return of their princess with an infinite amount of parades and dancing. The blanket of dread and fear that had once covered the kingdom was now lifted and replace with an air of joy, happiness, and the promise of a bright future.
Yes, the promise of a bright and miraculous future.
