Chapter 19
Ladybug never would've thought things would go downhill so quickly.
The King and Prince knew her identity. But Ladybug wasn't so worried that Adrien knew. She was more concerned with the King. He was out to execute the villagers. Things were not looking good.
If Ladybug hadn't revealed her identity, surely she would've died as Marinette. Then Adrien would've been forced to marry Chloe, her village would've been demolished, and Ladybug would've no longer existed. So really, it was the only thing she could've done.
But now, now it was war.
Ladybug had support from about 50 guards that were betrayed by the King. But she knew that number was nothing compared to the hundreds the King still had under his power.
She would do anything she could to protect her village.
Ladybug stood outside the castle gate with guards scattered about. The sky was dark and ominous. She scratched her chin, devising a plan as quickly as possible. A storm was on the way.
"We need to find the King's weak spot," Ladybug said, slamming a balled fist into her palm.
"I say we go full force," a guard yelled out.
"No, he'll expect that," Ladybug replied.
"He'll expect a secret attack too," another guard mumbled.
Chat jumped in out of nowhere besides Ladybug, panting heavily. Ladybug raised her eyebrow.
"Where have you been lately, kitty cat?"
"Busy saving the world," Chat shrugged.
"Without me?"
Chat's eyes widened when he noticed that Ladybug wasn't showing any sign of humor.
"Uh, I-"
"Never mind," Ladybug mumbled. "The King is going to attack this nearby village and I need your help."
"Got it," Chat replied. He cracked his knuckles and began walking forward. "How about we just go right into this?"
Ladybug grabbed Chat's tail and held him back. "Not so fast. We can't just attack him full force. He has an army!"
Ladybug thought for a few more seconds before a plan entered her mind. She smiled. "I think I've got something." She gestured for everyone to circle around her and she began relaying the plan to them.
*
A rain drop rolled down her soft cheek. She wiped it away and looked up into the sky.
"Looks like it's gonna rain," Alya observed, frowning. She set her basket full of crops down and looked out into the distance.
Nino scoffed, joining her. "Figures. The moment we get everything squared away in the fields, it decides to rain."
Alya then gasped, cupping a hand over her ear. "Nino! Do you hear that?"
"Yeah, the sound of my hopes and dreams crumbling to pieces," Nino mumbled, crossing his arms.
"No," Alya replied, fixing her hearing in on the distant sound of horse hooves clattering on the gravel. Her eyes widened and her heart sank.
"Get inside. Now!" Alya screamed to the villagers, grabbing Nino by his wrist and pulling him inside a cottage. She grabbed Rose on the way, who was planting some flowers.
"What's going on?!" Nino asked once they were inside, his eyes darting to the window.
"I hear the King's horses!" Alya yelled. "And there are a lot of them!"
Rose whimpered, hiding in a corner. "I don't wanna die!"
"Just calm down," Alya said. "Ladybug will save us! She did last time."
She glanced back out the window and noticed that the King's chariot had stopped in the middle of the square. She crouched down and watched. He stepped out, examining the silent surroundings.
"Come out. I know you all are here," he yelled.
Alya continued to watch him, a sweat bead rolling down her forehead. She bit her lip, waiting for her spotted hero to show up.
"Very well. If you will not come out on your own terms, then my guards will have to invite you out instead," The King said. He glanced back at the guards waiting with him and nodded his head. Immediately, they began running to the cottages.
Alya fled the window, her heart beating a mile a minute. She scooted next to Rose and Nino.
"Well? Is she coming?" Rose asked.
"I don't kn-"
"STOP!" a voice boomed from outside.
Alya's head perked up, immediately recognizing that strong voice. It was Ladybug! She crawled back over to the window and looked out.
She was standing next to Chat Noir with her hands on her hips. Behind her stood a large group of guards. Alya must've missed something because those guards looked like they were on Ladybug's side.
"Stop this. I'm warning you, King," Chat hissed.
Gabriel chuckled. "Ah, this is very amusing. You all think I'm scared?"
"You should be. We're gonna take you down," Ladybug replied confidently.
Gabriel glanced at the guards behind her and raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? You and what army?"
Ladybug laughed, turning around to face her team of guards. "Well, this one of-- WHAT?!"
The guards were all aiming their swords at Ladybug and Chat Noir.
"No way," Chat breathed. He fell to his knees. "You... betrayed us!" he exclaimed dramatically.
Ladybug growled and kicked Chat. He stood up immediately.
"That's right. We'd never disobey our King," the guard in charge replied.
"I can't we believe we fell for this," Ladybug mumbled.
The King laughed amusingly, clapping his hands. Silence filled the air. "Very spectacular performance."
Ladybug's face fell.
"But don't you think I'd know that this was all a set up?"
Her eyes widened as her heart sank into her chest. She had never felt so much fear in her life.
"Kill them!" The King ordered his guards.
The guards yelled and charged for each other, their weapons drawn. "Retreat!" Ladybug yelled at her team, but it was too late. Metal clattered into each other, screams of pain echoed throughout the village, and blood was shed.
Ladybug stared in horror at the scene. She would've gotten sliced up as well if it hadn't been for Chat swooping her out of the battle.
"We need to help!" Ladybug screamed, trying to intervene. Her team was being crushed by the King's men. They were severely outnumbered.
"We can't!" Chat replied. "Our powers are no use against them. There's way too many!"
Ladybug fell to her knees and sobbed as she watched the men get slaughtered, one by one. She never wanted death.
"We need to save the villagers while we can," Chat whispered into her ear.
She glanced up at her partner and nodded slowly, tears running down her face. She stood up and proceeded to the first cottage when a loud scream filled the air.
"Ladybug!"
The superhero quickly turned around and the sight caused Ladybug to feel sick. Her entire world crashed down on her.
The King had Alya pinned up against the cottage with a sharp dagger pointed at her chest. She struggled against his grip.
Ladybug's mind was on stun. She couldn't get a word out. Couldn't move a muscle. Her brain was telling her to do many things. Cry. Scream. Run. But instead, she did all of those at the same time.
Ladybug opened her mouth and screamed at the top of her lungs. She raced towards the King and Alya, moving her legs the fastest she's ever made them go.
The King brought back his elbow, and the dagger soared towards Alya's chest. Ladybug brought out her yoyo and quickly flung it over to the dagger in an attempt to push it away, but it was too late. The dagger pierced Alya's skin and her blood curdling scream filled the air.
Ladybug began to scream even louder and finally reached the King. She shoved him out of the way and went to Alya's aid.
Ladybug pulled the knife out of her chest. The brunette fell to the ground, clutching her bloody wound. Her face paled and her eyes barely stayed open.
"Stay with me," Ladybug cried, putting pressure on the wound. "You're gonna be alright," she glanced up. "Someone get a medic!"
Alya cracked a smile and slowly lifted her hand up to Ladybug's face. Tears spilled down Ladybug's cheeks as she placed her hand over Alya's.
"You're gonna be alright," Ladybug sobbed. "I know you will be."
"Take... care of... Marinette," Alya mumbled.
Ladybug nodded up and down. "I promise. I swear I will."
She then realized now would be the appropriate time to reveal her identity. It's the least she could do for her dying friend. Another tear raced down her cheek as she kept a tight grip on Alya's hand.
"I have something to tell you," Ladybug said shakily. "I'm-"
"I don't wanna know," Alya breathed, shaking her head. "Believe it or not, I like the mystery."
"Okay," Ladybug laughed quietly, her eyes blurry with tears.
"I'll... cheer you on... always," Alya mumbled weakly, her eyes glossing over. "Don't stop... doing what you do..."
"I promise," Ladybug said, nodding. She couldn't stop the flow of tears no matter how hard she tried.
"And Ladybug... don't let... anyone else die..." Alya trailed off, her empty eyes staring up into the sky. Her mouth hung open and silence settled upon the village.
"Alya," Ladybug said. She began shaking her friend. "Alya!" Ladybug yelled. A new wave of tears poured down her cheeks as she dropped her head and sobbed loudly.
An arm was placed around her shoulder. Chat crouched beside her, tears running down his face. Ladybug buried her head into his warm chest and continued sobbing.
"It's gonna be okay. I promise," he whispered.
Chat glanced up Gabriel who was getting up from the ground. He growled and stood up.
"Not so fast," Chat hissed at the King.
"What?" The King asked, tilting his head.
"Cataclysm!" Chat yelled. He was about to take a step towards his father when his eyes widened.
He dropped to his knees. He couldn't kill his father. But he was such a horrible man! Why couldn't he do this for Ladybug?
Ladybug placed a hand on Chat's chest and shook her head, her eyes red and puffy. Because she was better than that.
Ladybug stood up and walked over to Gabriel. "You are going to be locked up for a very long time," she said firmly. "For murder and unfair treatment of your subjects."
Gabriel scoffed, crossing his arms. "And who's going to dare lock me up? The few guards you have that aren't dead?"
"Me," a feminine voice said. Ladybug turned around and saw Chloe standing there with her arms crossed. Behind her, the rulers of another Kingdom.
"I called some friends to sort this out," Chloe sneered at the King. "You're a despicable man. Even more despicable than me!"
Ladybug and Chat widened their eyes. She admitted that she was despicable. That was a first.
Chloe nodded annoyingly at the two reactions. "Yes. I admitted it!"
"It'll do for me," Ladybug shrugged. She glanced at Gabriel and took a step forward, narrowing her eyes. "Lock him up so he'll rot in prison," she hissed.
A guard from the neighboring Kingdom walked over and grabbed Gabriel by the arm, dragging him away. "This won't be the last of me, Ladybug," Gabriel hissed, putting emphasize on her name.
"I wouldn't bet on that," Ladybug replied. She watched as Gabriel was shoved into a containment cell.
Ladybug's confident facade wore away as the carriage rode off. She crossed her arms and sat beside Alya's body, her eyes watering with tears. "I should tell her friend, Marinette," Ladybug mumbled to Chat. He knelt beside her and nodded, secretly knowing that Marinette was Ladybug. Soon, he'd tell her he was Adrien. But now was not the best time, considering her best friend was just killed.
Ladybug stood up and waved at Chat before soaring away into the distance.
