[78] The Legion
• Earth Prime, 3017 •
Some time had passed since Mon-El had arrived to the Earth of the future. The 31st Century as they called it was very different from what Mon-El remembered the planet to be like earlier.
There were no superheroes to protect the innocent citizens and the world had fallen to chaos. The Legion was also an almost defunct organization that was losing support and there was chaos and destruction everywhere.
To him, it seemed as if Earth was nearing its end too if things kept going down that steep direction. And he wasn't the only one with that notion, half of the Legion agreed with him.
Right then, he had been staying with the Legion while his space pod was being repaired and there were times when his stay reminded him a lot of his time with Young Justice.
He had never wanted to be a hero back then and thought that the Young Justice was more than enough to save the people in need. But his friends had motivated him to join them and play his part in saving innocent lives.
Right then on the earth that he had crash-landed again, there was no Young Justice, no Justice League and no other hero to look after the people who were suffering. And the world currently needed a hero the most.
He had been pondering on what to do because even though he wasn't one to voluntarily take up the task of a hero or a protector, he couldn't bear to see the people suffer either. Spending time with the Young Justice had brought about a great change in him and he could no longer go back to being the careless person that he used to be earlier.
So far his best bet was getting the Legion involved. Of course, he couldn't do things alone and needed help. He was on good terms with the Commander, Imra, so he thought it fair to give it a chance and talk to them about what he had been thinking.
"Mon-El, there you are," Imra's clear voice shook him out of his thoughts and he turned to look at her.
She handed him a cup of coffee and sat down on the chair across from him. He accepted the cup but the thoughtful frown hadn't faded from his features.
"You seem to be brooding a lot these days," she remarked, hazel eyes observing him closely, "what's on your mind?"
"Have I ever told you about my friends?" He spoke up and that abrupt question took her by surprise at first but then she shook her head.
"No, you haven't told me yet."
"Would you hear me out?"
"Of course," she smiled warmly and he retrieved his gaze, his heart skipping a beat.
There was something about her genuine demeanor that made him falter. Perhaps he had an inclination to fall for people who were genuine, loyal and warm.
Just like Kara.
But thinking of Kara made him realize what he was about to tell Imra.
"Back in the time I came from, there were vigilantes who kept the city safe," he spoke up, deciding to tell her first and then discuss it with the rest of the Legion if she approved, "there were teams of them. The Young Justice, the Justice League and the Bat vigilantes."
She kept silent but nodded, encouraging him to resume. And so he told her about how he had met the Young Justice and the impact they had had on him.
Mon was not open with everyone but Imra had the quality to listen patiently and offer her trust and support. So he didn't find it hard to share stuff from his past with her.
He even told her about Supergirl and how much she had changed him, from a shitty person to the man he was currently.
Imra was listening to his tales as if enraptured, learning about those heroes of the past that she had never even heard of.
"So I was just thinking... What if the Legion bands together and do the same?" He voiced out the main question at last, "I have seen you guys fight and train, I know you're good. Why don't you use your resources to help out the people then?"
She knew his point was valid but she sighed, looking down at her entwined fingers, "you're right. We should have taken the stand long ago, but after Tasir's death, we could never bring the Legion together."
His brow furrowed slightly as he had never heard of that name before from any of the members. "Tasir?"
She took in a deep breath, "he was the Commander before me. He died on duty."
"Oh."
"And after him, the Legion broke up entirely. The people you see here right now are not even half of what we used to be. So after Tasir, things turned downhill for all of us. Many of us resigned and left for their planets, the ones who are staying do not know how long they should stick around either."
However, the fact that she had said planets made Mon confused, "planets?"
She realized that she hadn't told him the scope the Legion had had in the past and she shook her head, "we used to be an intergalactic organization but after Commander Tasir, we broke up into fragments. Most of the members from other planets went back."
"So if the Legion was an intergalactic organization, that would mean some of those people are still part of it," he spoke up, realizing that could be the reason she had not been so surprised to hear that he was from another planet back during their first encounter.
A melancholic smile spread on her features and she nodded, "you're right. One of those people is right in front of you."
His brow furrowed slightly as he asked, "you're not human?"
"I'm from Saturn," she revealed at last, "from its moon Titan, to be precise. So of course I'm not human but as I have been here for such a long time, I have adapted very well to my surroundings. It's almost as if I was always a part of this planet, right from the very beginning."
Mon could see right then that just as he considered Earth to be more of a home to him than Daxam, Imra had the same feeling towards Earth as compared to her life on Titan.
"So I understand what you are going through to a certain extent," she remarked, "I relate to you in many aspects."
He kept silent for a short while but then spoke up, "and you do consider Earth as your home."
"Of course I do."
"Then wouldn't you want to protect your home?"
She looked up into his clear blue eyes and thought for a while. His statement struck through her and she took in a deep breath, eyes closing for a brief second as she pondered on his words.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw him looking back at her with that hopeful look in his eyes as if waiting for her to agree.
"I see what you mean," she gave in and stood up, "I will talk to the Legion myself."
But before she could leave, his hand closed onto her wrist to stop her.
"What?"
"Thank you," he stated and saw that melancholic look got replaced with that lovely and beautiful smile on her features.
"What for? I haven't even talked to the Legion yet."
"For listening," he replied, "it's been long since I had someone listen to me."
She laughed lightly, reaching closer to pat his cheek gently. He froze as he hadn't been expecting that but the playful spark in her eyes made him realize that she was just being friendly, treating him like friends did with one another.
"I'll listen every time you have something to tell," she offered, "it's no big deal."

• Outer Space, Undetermined Time •
The majority of the Legion agreed to Mon's suggestion and they willingly plunged themselves into putting their skills to use and saving the citizens. Before that, Mon was officially recruited into the Legion and as time passed, they had all started to trust and accept him.
Time had picked speed and days turned to months that lapsed quickly into years even. The Legion was trying its best to help out the innocent people who got entangled in the chaos of the almost destructing world.
At times, it was all too familiar to Mon and he would get overwhelmed, recalling his old friends and the time he had spent with them.
But his new friends were good too; Imra and Brainiac were always there to help him out and the rest of the Legion had also begun to accept him and positively interact with him.
Aside from the frequent rescue missions, things had started to take a somewhat smoother course. With the Legion stepping up for the people's betterment, they had started to regain their position in society.
Slowly but steadily, the Legion rose back to its former power. Mon and Imra were the initiators of that drastic change and as more people joined, the Legion was getting stronger.
Over time there had been another development as Mon and Imra had come quite close to each other.
Perhaps due to their similarities or due to the fact that they both had been searching for a soulmate. But whatever the reason, the two had found what they were looking for in each other and were happy to be together.
Things were improving considerably until Mon, Imra and Brainiac had to go on an intergalactic mission that turned out to be a trap. While they got ambushed by the enemy, they fought back but got injured.
Imra had taken deadly blows in attempting to keep Mon and Brainiac safe and was no longer in the state to walk even. Mon had to make a hasty escape carrying her to the space pod upon seeing that she was in no condition to sustain any more blows. Brainiac had given them cover by firing at the opponents but soon he had to retreat as well.
The only option left was to abandon the mission or else they would die in the aftermath. So with great difficulty, they made it to their space pod and Brainiac took the controls, whizzing it away before they could get caught.
Mon was intensely worried for Imra but it seemed as if she had seen that coming and somehow accepted her fate.
Her hands cupped his face and hazel eyes looked softly into bright blue. She was getting weaker with every passing second and he had to find a power cell for her to rejuvenate in.
But the way she held him and her lips parting made him stop, feeling that she wanted to say something. "Mon..."
"Hang in there," he reassured her, looking down at her injured form that he was carrying in his arms, "I will find you a power cell first."
"No, wait... Listen..."
The request wanted him to stop but he knew that any second wasted in not putting her to rejuvenation could end up being risky for her.
"I love you," she breathed, her eyes fluttering shut, "even if I don't make it... I will be watching over you... And wishing you luck..."
"No... Don't say that," his voice shook with those words, "you will recover soon, I know that."
"If I don't make it... I want you to take up... My post," her fingers gently caressed his cheek, "please... You can lead the Legion the best of all. They need you."
"But Imra..."
"All the best..." And with that final remark, her eyes closed fully and his heart sank to see her thus. He couldn't bear to lose one more person he had grown to love and value over time.
The only consolation was that her pulse wasn't dead. It was still thumping faintly, struggling to survive.
Luckily, he found a power cell and shifted Imra into it. But as he did so, the space pod received a jolt and Brainiac who had been at the controls was blasted away to the other corner. Before Mon could get to him and see if he was alright, the pod catapulted and hurtled through a dark vortex.
"Oh no," Mon saw the flashes of silver before everything went pitch black, but he turned his attention to his fellow, "Brainiac, you okay?"
But he received no response so he tried to find him by himself but the space pod was catapulting continuously, making it difficult for him.
At last, there was a strong jolt and a crash. Mon's head collided with something hard and he momentarily blacked out. Neither of the three was in the state to see what had happened and where had their space pod crashed.
Little did they know that the unexpected had happened and they were in for a great shock when they would regain consciousness.
