Chapter 28

"Hey Kiddo, you okay?"

Logan looked up and tried to smile a little. "Yes, I'm fine."

"I'm sorry. About yesterday." Patton said, sitting down and tucking his feet under him.

"You mentioned."

"I know. It's just.... well, if you don't apologise twice, did you even apologise?" Patton asked, laughing quietly.

"Patton, what's wrong?"

"Wh- nothing." Patton said quickly.

"Patton, I don't know if you know or not, but mermaid's are uncommonly good at deciphering different tones of voice. You're lying and I want to know what's wrong." Logan pushed his glasses up his nose and crossed his arms.

Patton sighed. "I dunno, Kiddo. I've just been feeling off, that's all."

"In what way?" Patton shrugged.

"I don't know. Just... off."

"Is there anything I can do to help?" Why was Logan so worried about this pirate anyway? How did he know that this wasn't just all a clever way of manipulating him?

"Kiddo?" Logan looked up quickly.

"Did I zone out? Apologies."

Patton smiled. "It's fine, Kiddo. I was being stupidly boring anyway."

"I'm sure you weren't." Patton laughed.

"Thanks Kiddo."

Because Patton wouldn't do that to him. Patton wouldn't want to hurt him. Besides, he was already a prisoner on his way to a death sentence, he didn't have anything left to lose.

"What's going to happen to me and Logan in Risuca?" Remus asked.

"Don't ask me." Janus said, turning a page in his book.

"Why? Are you too stupid to remember?"

"That's a bold jump to make seeing as I am one of the only literate people on this ship."

"Being able to read doesn't make you smart." Remus said definitely.

"Kinda does. And no, I'm not too stupid to remember." Janus shrugged. "Captain keeps plans like this very close to her chest. In short, you pry, you die."

Remus raised his eyebrows slightly but didn't say anything. "Am I going to see Logan again?"

"As far as I know, no."

"So I'm going to my death alone. Brilliant."

"See, you say things like that and yet expect me to think you don't know anything." Janus snapped. Remus ran his finger along the hairline crack in the glass.

"How many more of these would you say would break the glass?" He asked.

Janus didn't give him an answer. Remus looked up at him, unbothered, before looking back at the glass.

"I'm going to escape, you know." He said.

"Mhm, sure you are."

"Exactly." Remus said. He turned away from the crack and looked up at the lid of the tank, crossing his arms. He hit his emerald tail against the metal holding the tank together, marvelling at how it didn't hurt at all.

"Normally that would hurt." He thought. "Some of the slight perks of being soulless."

It was dark and everything was silent. Well, not silent exactly. The rigging creaked, the wood of the ship moved and somewhere on the ship, a pirate snored. But it was night-time and that was enough for Logan.

Running his fingers along the metal, he found where he'd started making scratches. He dragged his nails along the metal, wincing at the squealing sound it made but otherwise focused on his task.

Scrape, scrape, scrape, scr- snap! Logan bit his tongue to stop from crying out as one of his claws broke off.

"Where am I even trying to go with this?" Logan wondered, curling his hurt hand into a fist. "I'm not in familiar waters and even if I did get out of this tank, I'd never get to the sea in time without being seen. It's hopeless." Logan ran his fingers along the scratches in the metal. Barely a dent but they were there. "It's hopeless." He thought. "But I need to try."

Um... here. I don't know what to say about this so... here.
Bye,
Blaize
