Even Fairytale Characters Would Be Jealous [11: Un coup de foudre - Part 1]
"Can you believe he just left? He didn't even bother saying happy birthday to me! Just made us both coffee, got dressed and took Emma out. He didn't even say where they were going?"
"Has he ever done anything like this before?"
Marinette shook her head, she didn't know if she was sad, angry or, just plain, shocked!
"No! You know what he's like, he's usually well over the top and extreme...not this." Marinette dropped her head into her folded arms on the table of the coffee shop she was currently in with Alya. The two resided here often, grabbing their usual favourite sweet treats and a delicious strawberry lemonade, perfection for the hot summer days.
Marinette looked down at her hands, still gutted that her ring wasn't there. She had visions of waking up this morning to Adrien either having found it and had it cleaned for her, or the selfish and extreme side of herself wanted him to be there with a new ring, she knew he had it insured, he'd easily be able to claim a new one. Also, it wasn't like he was poor. Then there was the thought of his mother's ring, the one she'd seen him playing with a couple of weeks ago. The one he hid as soon as she entered the room.
"Marinette? Marinette Dupain-Cheng? Is there a Marinette Dupain-Cheng in here?" A delivery man had turned up with a box and was randomly shouting her name, well, almost her name.
"I'm Marinette, but it's Agreste, not Dupain-Cheng." The delivery driver looked down at the notes on his clipboard before looking back at Marinette and Alya.
"I don't know if I can give this to you, mam, it say's 'for Marinette Dupain-Cheng only'."
"I understand that, but Dupain-Cheng is my maiden name. I was married two years ago."
"Congratulations...but I still can't give it to you."
Marinette literally facepalmed, what the hell was she going to do?
"What if she could find some sort of ID?" Alya asked, noticing her friend's exasperated face.
"I can accept an ID, or you can answer a question for me..."
"What?" Marinette asked. "A question? I'm quite sure that isn't legal?"
"Oh but it is..." the delivery man pulled an envelope out of his side satchel. Coughing, rather overdramatically, he opened said envelope and pulled it out as though he had the winning act of the 'X Factor' inside.
"To open the packet, Marinette Dupain-Cheng, you must answer the following question from your husband. What part of his body do you claim to like the best?"
It was precisely at that moment that Marinette realised everyone in the café had stopped and was staring at her and she'd never been more grateful for the sun, and the fact she was wearing rather large sunglasses; hiding a good proportion of her face and the blossoming red which had taken over.
She looked to Alya, who was smirking at her. Lips quirked to one side and one eyebrow raised in question.
"Shut up," Marinette ordered, Alya shrugging in response.
"I never said anything," Alya smirked. She rested one elbow on the table, using the same arm to support her chin. Her attention fully on Marinette and the answer which was about to escape her lips.
"His bum," Marinette said quietly, her hand fumbling over her mouth and taking away some of the volume.
"Sorry, what was that?" The man stood looking highly amused by what was happening in front of him.
Marinette mumbled it out again and again, Alya snickering next to her doing nothing for the embarrassment as she finally shouted out, "his ass!"
The café fell silent, everyone looking over at the two women and Marinette's face taking on a brighter colour, one it hadn't been since her collège days.
"Sorry, Mam, that's not the answer."
"What?" She shrieked. Not only had she just made a huge fool out of herself, it was the wrong answer. "Give that here!" She went to stretch out for the paper only for the man to pull it away.
"Sorry, can't do."
"What do I do then? It's my package."
He rummaged through his little side satchel again and held out a business card. "Here, this will tell you what to do." Turning to the door, the man strode out not even a backwards glance at the women and headed out, parcel still in hands.
Dropping the card onto the table, Marinette slid down in her chair, one hand blocking over her sunglasses and hiding away from the other customers. She was quite sure they were all having a good gossip about her now, she just prayed none of them noticed who she was.
"He did that just so I'd call out I like his ass in public!" she grumbled. "Why is he such an embarrassment?"
"I don't know, you're the one who's been obsessed with him for 10 years and married him," Alya laughed before looking closely at the card. "You're a falling star? What the hell does that mean?"
Marinette removed her hand and shot up in her seat, snatching the card from Alya's hand. She read it over once, twice, three times before pushing the chair back and stalking out of the café with her eyes on the card. She hadn't even bothered leaving a tip or pushing her chair under. She was more intrigued by what he was planning? She could come back later and leave something as a thanks.
Falling star? She fell from the sky the first day they met.
Ducking into an alleyway, she checked around her before transforming, Alya sliding to a halt besides a fully suited Ladybug.
"Are you ready for an adventure?" Ladybug said, her eyebrows wiggling with mischief.
"What kind of adventure?" Her friend asked, calling Trixx into her pendant.
"It seems my mischievous Kitty has planned a little surprise. We've got to go to where I first crashed into him."
"I knew he wouldn't have forgotten your birthday. Why did we ever think he had?" Rena Rouge said, springing alongside Ladybug as she led the way to their first meeting point. The point where she crash landed on top of him and they'd been deeply attached since. It was a shame her yo-yo string wasn't red, because they were definitely connected from that day on by the red string of fate.
"What are we doing here?
"Look for another card."
"Why?"
"The song he sang to me in Vegas. Michael Bublé's 'Everything', it's our song. You're a falling star, those are the first lyrics of the song, and the first time we ever met I fell onto him and suspended us in the air." Ladybug began moving around the area looking for possible clues to the next whereabouts. He'd sung this song so many times to her (against her will of course) and they'd danced along to it in their kitchen. This was their song.
"Oh my, you were the falling star! That's so romantic! Ladybug, here, I've got it!" Rena shrieked, waving an envelope in the air. It was pink with glittery red hearts all over it, attached to it was a perfect terracotta rose - fascination and anticipation.
'You're the getaway car.'
Getaway car? Her lucky charm when they fought André. The day they were voted Paris' Sweethearts for the first time, of many times. But what was memorable about that day? What would he remember?
Her declaration on her balcony.
She didn't even bother telling Rena where she was going, instead she set off into the skyline and bolted for her parents, leaving her best friend to hold the rose and envelope.
Landing down with a little more speed than she would have liked, she almost crashed into her father who was standing holding a peach rose (appreciation, gratitude and friendship) and her mother holding Emma who was wearing something that she definitely wasn't dressed in this morning.
"Maman, what the hell is Emma wearing?" Ladybug didn't know whether to be confused or appalled.
"Yikes!" Rena's arrival was clearly marked by the pronunciation of her words.
"Her father dressed her," Sabine announced, a strange smile taking over her face. Emma stared at Ladybug , every now and then burying her head into Sabine's shoulder. Since Emma was around six months old, they'd restricted the amount of time they'd transformed around her, meaning she wasn't familiar with the heroes being her parents.
"In the dark?" Rena asked, moving forward to look at the state of her Goddaughter.
Emma was wearing Marinette's purple, gold and sparkly cats poncho, but it had been hacked and altered in an attempt to make a dress. It looked hideous; but she couldn't deny the sentiment behind it. The fact he'd taken something from the early days of their marriage and involved their daughter.
"Anyway, you've got a lot to get on with, so Emma, can you give Ms. Ladybug the envelope please?" Emma refused to give the envelope to Ladybug, choosing to throw it at Tom instead. He handed over a green envelope with black paw prints on the front, a clear message from her husband.
Pulling the paper out of the envelope she read the message:
'You're the line in the sand when I go too far.'
Their rooftop, their conversations.
Kissing her (screaming) daughter, Maman and Papa, she grabbed the rose and threw it at Alya. Taking off again, this time to their rooftop.
"What do you think he's doing?" Rena asked, following Ladybug to where another rose sat on the rooftop, this time green (harmony, peace, renewal), and another envelope.
"Not a clue, but I'm excited." She giggled, handing the rose to Alya and taking the envelope. This time as she pulled it out, she couldn't help but laugh, as inside sat a pigeon feather.
"You're the swimming pool, on an August day, and you're the perfect thing to say. Oh, how I love this man." She clutched the envelope to her chest as she looked in the direction she would be going next.
"Swimming pool? Oh my God! That's where you tried to get him back together with Kagami!"
Ladybug smiled at her friend, nodding in agreement and happiness. Yes that's where she'd tried to get them back together only to fall hopelessly in love with him again! And, if he wasn't lying, where he'd realised his love for her, too.
As they set down in front of the entrance they noticed another hero standing there waiting. "Ryuko?" Ladybug walked forward greeting her friend who took her into a tight hug. Anyone who knew Kagami knew this was out of character, but Ladybug settled into the embrace anyway.
"I thought you weren't a hugger," Ladybug laughed.
"I'm not, but I feel this deserves one. Happy Birthday, Ladybug." She handed over another rose, this time yellow with red tips - friendship and deepening love, followed by an envelope complete with stickers. A rain storm, an umbrella and them.
This time as she removed the object from the envelope she noticed it was a postcard.
'Viva Las Vegas'
She turned it over and read his perfectly scribed writing of the lines she knew so well.
'And you play it coy, but it's kinda cute
Oh, when you smile at me you know exactly what you do
Baby don't pretend, that you don't know it's true
'Cause you can see it when I look at you
And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It's you, it's you, you make me sing
You're every line, you're every word, you're everything'
She smiled, tears beginning to fill her eyes. She grabbed her yo-yo, opening the magical object in hope Kaalki was still in there. It seems her husband had been helping himself to the Miracle box. A quick rummage around inside the small compartment and her hands settled on the glasses, and therefore the kwami of 'Voyage'.
"Where are we going? I mean, I know Vegas, but where?" Rena asked, Ladybug moving the glasses to her eyes and calling the unification between the two kwamis.
"I think the hotel, but he also mentions making him sing, along with every word and every line which makes me wonder if it's the karaoke lounge."
"When did you play it coy? Because honestly it sounds like you two sang, got hitched and then spent a whole lot of time relieving years of pent up sexual tension."
Ladybug's cheeks reddened as she created the portal ready to take them through to Vegas, starting with the karaoke lounge.
"Rena? Do you have any idea what this is about?" Ladybug said, closing the portal behind them and heading into the closed venue. They made their way into the bar area, only to come to a complete stop.
"Not a...woah!"
The stage had been covered in coral rose petals (desire) and roses, candles lighting the darkened room and casting flicking shadows in the empty venue.
Ladybug walked forward, picking up a rose and handing it to the rather impressive bouquet Alya was building before moving forwards and taking the card from the middle of the room.
'I will honour my truth, and seek what I desire;
everlasting love and passion set on fire.
– Nikki Rowe'
"Whatever Adrien's planning, Nino's got a lot to try and contend with." Ladybug turned to look at her best friend who was using her flute to take pictures and videos of the impressive set up. Not only had Chat Noir set up candles and roses, but also pictures of the two of them (in superhero form) from over the ten years they'd worked together.
Ladybug walked to the first one and laughed, they looked so young and awkward, nothing at all like their latest picture taken last week at the sentencing of Gabriel Agreste. Their faces beaming as the world's worst father finally had his comeuppance. She had to admit, not only did they look strong and in love but they were a striking couple, she'd remember to ask him to put this up in their new home. She didn't care if people visiting thought they were over the top fans of the superheroes, it was a beautiful photograph.
"Where to next then? Is there another clue?" Rena was practically buzzing with excitement as she bounded over and peeked over Ladybug's shoulder at the piece of paper.
"I don't know if this is one? Maybe, hummm..." Ladybug looked around the room for possible clues for what's next when she realised only one of the portraits were in colour. The one of her and Chat outside 'The Chapel O'Love'. "I've got it, follow me." Making their way out the venue and apologising to the cleaning staff as they left, Ladybug led Rena to the place where it all happened. The wedding venue.
"Nice," Rena said sarcastically, eyeing the building up and down.
Ladybug giggled and turned to her friend. "I know it's not the greatest but we did get free chicken wings and a tea towel out of it."
She walked to the door, pulled on the handle and was only half surprised to find it already open. Stepping inside she noticed once more a large array of roses and petals spread along the floor and leading into the chapel. The soft melody of 'I can't help (falling in love with you)' playing through the doors leading into the main area.
It was actually a lot nicer than she remembered (considering she remembered precisely nothing) and it seems they'd even splurged out for Elvis. The song continued as they made their way into the room, Rena stopping to grab a white rose and add it to the collection - honour and new beginnings.
As she made it to the front she half expected Chat Noir to walk out and present her once more with her wedding ring. Unfortunately that didn't happen, instead the music changed and she almost jumped out her skin as Elvis started singing 'A Little Less Conversation'. The wedding log book was open to their page where they'd not only signed it once but twice! Above the names of Ladybug and Chat Noir sat Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste both with an official registration number.
"I know what that means," Rena laughed, singing along with Elvis as he declared 'a little more action please', wiggling her eyes once more at a blushing Ladybug. "Oh come on girl. You have a little girl, I think it's obvious you two have done the deed – multiple times."
"That doesn't mean I want to talk about it," she huffed, Rena laughing as she once again took a couple of pictures and a short video. "You better not put this on the blog."
"I 'pinky' promise."
"Okay then," Ladybug sighed, before thanking Elvis and heading out the door. "To the Bellagio."
It didn't take too long to make the trip, Ladybug being swamped by the manager as soon as she walked into the hotel lobby.
"Miss Ladybug, it's lovely to see you again."
She nodded in welcome as the manager directed her upstairs and towards the Penthouse suite, where once again the sounds of soft music escaped into the halls.
"It's been an honour." The manager opened the door, releasing the song into the hall before turning and heading away.
'Ooh, I love it when you do it like that
And when you're close up, give me the shivers
Oh baby, you wanna dance 'til the sunlight cracks
And when they say the party's over, then we'll bring it right back'
Ladybug walked into the room and noticed not one, not two but four of her friends positioned in the lounge playing instruments and singing. 'Shivers', of course he'd choose 'shivers'.'
"Awww," Rena whispered in her ear, "it's your baby making song."
Ladybug turned around and walloped her friend quite hard around the arm. "You're enjoying this a little too much."
In response, Rena laughed; she walked over to the bedroom picking up the single orange rose from on the bed and laughed once more. Waving it at Ladybug.
Luka, Rose, Juleka and Ivan finished playing and sat smiling at Ladybug and Rena, Rose gushing over the bouquet of roses Rena was currently holding.
"Orange is for... what?" She handed the roses to Juleka and pulled out her flute, tapping on the screen until a smirk lifted one side of her face. "Orange roses represent passion, energy, excitement and enthusiasm. I bet." She chuckled, placing her baton over her shoulder and back into its hood.
Rolling her eyes, Ladybug looked at Luka. "Is he here?"she questioned, her eyes darting around the room. This had to be the last stop. Most of her friends were here and she was sure Adrien would be too.
"Nope," Luka said, standing and holding out an envelope to her before embracing her in a hug. "Back to Paris you go." He dropped her a wink, a quiet laugh leaving his mouth as he looked up at the light fitting. "Oh, I've heard stories about that." He pointed up and everyone started laughing, yes the story was common knowledge and one Chat Noir had split without any encouragement during their Halloween party.
As her friends caught up with the mission so far, Luka explained he needed to take Kaalki from Ladybug to get them all home. She handed the glasses over and watched as Luka opened the portal.
Ladybug tore open the envelope, one that was official looking, and pulled out an invitation.
'You're a carousel'
Chat wanted her to go to their park, to the park where their statue resided.
It was time to return to Paris.
