Old Flames and New Friends
"Hi! How can I help you?" The nurse behind the counter greets us as we walk into the nursing home.
"Hi. We're here to see Peggy Carter." I state with a smile, grasping Steve's hand.
"Okay! She's gonna be down the hall, room 107."
"Thank you." I say with a smile as I lead Steve down the hall.
"I don't know if I can do this Clara." He stops half way down the hall, leaning against the wall.
"It's been so long, and I..."
"Hey." I say grabbing both his hands in mine. "It's gonna be okay. I'll be right here if you need me. She'll be happy to see you Steve." I say with a smile hoping to help his mood.
"Thank you doll." He says giving me a small kiss. "I do still want you to come with me though."
"Steve. I don't want to intrude—"
"You won't be. Please, for me?" He brings my hands up to his heart as he asks, giving me the sad puppy look that he knows I can't say no to.
"You are so lucky I love you."
"I love you too." He says with another kiss and we head into room 107.
"Hey Peg." Steve say timidly as we reach her bedside.
"Steve...oh my. You're here. You're really here."
"Yeah. I'm back." She reaches for his hand and he grasps her frail one, making her smile widen.
"Turns out I've just been frozen all this time." He says with a slight laugh, making me smile at how comfortable he is.
"It's been such a long time Steve."
"I know Peg and I'm sorry. If it could've happened any other way.. But you got to live your life, you should be proud Peggy."
"My only regret is that you didn't get to live yours." She says with remorse and that's when Steve reaches over to grab my hand smiling at me.
"But now I am Peg. I'd like to introduce you to Clara Stark."
"Little Clara?" She asks looking at me intently. When her and Dad worked together at SHIELD, I'd often go with Dad and spend hours there, and Peggy was there a lot of the time.
"Yeah Peggy, it's me." I say with a smile and she reaches for my hand which I disconnect from Steve to grab hers.
"It's been so long darling. Look at you. You look just like your mother." She says with a smile, making me laugh a bit before the tears can come through.
"Yeah..and Anthony looks just like Dad. I'm sorry I never got back to seeing you Peggy, after everything that happened..."
"I understand dear, don't you worry one bit." She says moving her thumb over my hand in comfort when she comes in contact with Steve's ring.
"Steve." She gasps. "You didn't tell me you asked this beautiful woman to marry you!" She says now fully looking at the ring, smiling at the two of us.
"Yeah, about a week ago." He says shyly, smiling at me.
"Well you sure are lucky Steve, I know he'll treat you right dear." She says with a smile.
"That I am." He says taking my hand back from Peggy, and placing a kiss on my forehead.
"What is it?" Peggy asks as Steve lapses into a silence and we both notice it.
"For as long as I could remember, I just wanted to do what was right. I guess I'm not quite sure what that is anymore."
I knew the stuff with SHIELD was going to start bugging him more. For such a long time, we felt like we could trust where we worked, but it's starting to seem not.
"It's just not the same."
"You're always so dramatic." Peggy says making me snort in agreement. "Look, you saved the world. We rather mucked it up."
"You didn't. Knowing you helped found SHIELD is half the reason we stay."
"Hey. The world has changed, and all we can do is our best. And sometimes it's best to just start over. If SHIELD needs to be left behind for the two of you to live your lives together than do so."
She says with a smile, but before I can reply to her the glass on her side table begins to shake. Knowing for some reason this is my doing I excuse myself from the room.
Exiting the room too quickly I become dizzy and make my way to the public restrooms suddenly not feeling well. Wondering why my powers started to act up, I become sick and no longer focus on that.
After I clean up and rinse my mouth out, I leave to find Steve waiting in the hallway for me looking worried.
"You alright doll?" He asks placing his hand on my back in comfort.
"Yeah, my powers went haywire and made me sick. No biggie." I wrap my arm around his waist as we step onto the quiet Washington street.
"Well how about I make some soup and we can just relax at my place?"
"That would be lovely."
And so we head back, and he makes soup–insisting he'll take care of me, and we listen to his old jazz records and just talk the night away, thankfully I don't have another strange episode.

About a week later, I'm still having an issue controlling my outbursts. Objects will shake and move whenever I'm near, and I've had a harder time blocking others' thoughts from myself.
Not only am I dealing with the telekinetic side of things, I think these outbursts are making me sick, since every time there's an episode I end up getting sick. It's obnoxious.
"How are you feeling Love?" Steve asks one morning as I lay in bed on my side, hoping to ward off another incident.
"I'm fine. I just wish I knew why my powers were freaking out so much."
"Do you think, maybe we should call Tony? See if he can help?"
"No, Tony has a lot on his plate right now, he doesn't need to worry about this too."
I still haven't heard from Pepper, making me worry more about the two of them, but with things going on here, I can't be distracted.
"Okay, well do you feel alright enough to come and meet Sam at the VA?"
"Yeah I think so. We haven't seen our running buddy in awhile." I say with a smile making him laugh.
Walking into the VA, we ask for Sam's class and are shown down a certain hall. Inside we see a lot of ex-military telling of their hardships in being back in civilian life.
"Some stuff you leave there, other stuff you bring back. It's our job to figure out how to carry it. Is it gonna be in a big suitcase, or a little man-purse? It's up to you."
With that Sam wraps up his talk and they all thank him on their way out. Steve and I wait at the doorway, until Sam picks up his things and sees us at the door.
"Look who it is, the runnin' man and his girl."
"Caught the last few minutes, it's pretty intense." Steve says shaking his hand in greeting.
"Yeah man, we all got the same problems. Guilt, regret."
"You lose someone?"
"My wingman, Riley. Flying a night mission, standard rescue op. Nothing we hadn't done before, until an RPG knocked Riley's dumbass out of the sky. Nothing I could do. It was like I was up there just to watch."
"I'm so sorry Sam." I say wishing to comfort him more than just words.
"After that I had a really hard time finding a reason for being over there you know?" Steve nods knowing the feeling with Bucky.
"But your happy now, being back in the world?"
"The number of people giving me orders is down to about zero. So hell yeah." He says with a small chuckle.
"Are you thinking about getting out?" He asks mostly to Steve.
"No...I don't know. It'd have to be a big enough reason." He says looking to me with a smile. "To be honest, I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I did."
"Ultimate fighting? Just a great idea off the top of my head. You could do whatever you want. What makes you happy?"
"She does." Steve says with a smile looking down at me. "I think we'd figure out something when we leave."
"Yeah, we'd get along just fine." I say with a smile and look to see Sam smiling genuinely at the two of us.
"Would you like to get some lunch Sam?" I offer squeezing Steve's hand in affection.
"I can always go for some grub." He says with a smile.
