A Lovers' Day Surprise

Fenris ran his fingers over the red scarf around his wrist again. He had finished one of his mercenary jobs early and had returned to Kirkwall two days before he'd told Alexandria he would. And just in time for Lovers' Day, the holiday lovers celebrated with gifts. In the small pouch he hid under the Amell crest at his hip, he carried the gift he'd bought for her. Varric, the only one of their friends who knew he was back, had promised to lure Alexandria into The Hanged Man that night.

Which was why he was sitting in the farthest corner of the tavern, waiting impatiently. They had recently rekindled their romance after realizing he couldn't fight his feelings for her and he'd been grateful that she'd forgiven him for walking out on her three years earlier. A glass of untouched wine sat on the table in front of him, along with a single red rose. He disliked the wine here, but only ordered it to keep the barkeep from continuing to glare daggers at him. Again, he ran his fingers over the scarf and thought back on the day he received it. He'd given in to his desire for Alexandria and it had been the first time he'd ever called her by the nickname her family called her, Alex. He still called her that. Fenris glanced up through the snowy hair that was always in his eyes and saw Anders and Merrill walk in. He snorted to himself. Anders had tried for years to woo Alexandria. The rogue woman never once gave in. He smiled to himself knowing that she never gave up on him during the years before he came to his senses. The door opened again and in walked Aveline and Donnic. The couple sat at a table nearby, leaning close to each other.  A moment later came the woman he'd been waiting for. Isabela, Varric, and Alexandria walked in together. Varric pulled a chair out for Alexandria at the table the Anders and Merrill had claimed and she sat, after what Fenris was sure was one of her famous smartass comments, with her back to him. Varric turned and gave the Elf a quick wink before sitting himself.

Varric was telling everyone one of his outlandish stories and the entire table was laughing and carrying on, even Anders was enjoying himself for once. Alexandria's thoughts turned to Fenris. He wasn't due to return for a few more days and today, as she watched couples exchange gifts, she missed him fiercely. She would have just stayed at the estate, but Varric insisted that she join him and the others at the Hanged Man tonight. Seeing Aveline and Donnic at a table to themselves only reminded her that her lyrium tattooed Elf wasn't there with her and she very nearly turned back around and walked out. Why her bullshitting best friend insisted she join the others tonight was beyond her. She only hoped Isabela would keep her sexscapades to herself tonight. Alexandria suddenly felt something soft gently come across her cheek as she set her mug down. She reached up and found a rose in her hand.

"Happy Lover's Day," the husky voice she knew so well said, his breath in her ear.

Alexandria's heart jumped into her throat and she spun around. "Fenris!" She jumped up and threw her arms around him. "I wasn't expecting to see you for a couple more days!"

Fenris smiled and gave her that look that made her knees go weak every time. "I finished earlier than expected so I decided to surprise you." The two lovers joined the others.

Alexandria suddenly looked over at Varric. "You knew he was back!"

"My lady! You wound me with such accusations!" But the laughter in his eye told her that he'd helped Fenris plan his surprise. "Oh, Chuckles, you could always see right through my bullshit."

"Apparently, not always."

Later that night, Alexandria and Fenris left the tavern together and headed to Hightown.

"I should be mad at you, Fenris," Alexandria said, a smile playing at her lips. "But this was a lovely surprise." She held the rose to her nose.

"It's not the only surprise I have." Fenris reached down and pulled out the pouch from behind the crest. He carefully took out the gift he'd bought her. Alexandria unwrapped the cloth that Fenris had carefully placed the gift in and revealed a pendant with a pale blue stone set on a silver background. Etched on the silver and visible through the stone was the Amell crest.

"It's beautiful!" she breathed. "Oh, Fenris, I've nothing in exchange. I didn't expect you..."

Fenris placed a gauntleted finger over her lips. "Seeing you happy again is all I need."

Alexandria pulled him close and claimed his lips, wrapping her arms around his neck as he wrapped his around her waist. "This is the best Lover's Day I've ever had," she said before Fenris' hungry lips crashed into hers again. Neither one of them could be happier than they were in that moment, exchanging a passionate kiss in the middle of Hightown.
