The Walk
"Keira?" I asked as I watched her stare strangely off into the distant. I've seen her stare off before, but not like this. She had a look on her face that confused me.
"Oh, sorry," her voice dreamy as she thought, "so, what did you want to talk to me about?"
"Our homework, that's why you're at my house," I replied crossing my arms, something was clearly up.
"Right," She replied trying to snap back into focus.
I couldn't help but feel like she was hiding something, it bothered me, and yet, she seemed to be fine with it.
"Keira, is something wrong, did something happen last night?" I asked as I put my hand on her book and pushed it down.
"Actually...." Her voice wandered, but it told me something was up.
Before I knew it, she was off, telling me everything. Minutes later, with her detailed description, she ended it off with.
"I have to go, but I'll tell you the last thing that happened," She said as she put her coat on, got her bag and was headed towards my door.
I followed her there, I had to know what went on the other night.
"He gave me something," She said as she held a book tight to her chest,
"What?!" I was practically screaming inside, I wanted to know really bad.
"My first kiss," She beamed, happy, "well goodbye Samara, see you tomorrow,"
As I closed the door, I couldn't help but feel jealous. Me? Jealous of Keira? Never. Or was I?
The better question: Why was I jealous?
I walked from the school, I was supposed to be picked up, but no one could take me. I kept going and as I looked around, I realized someone else was on their way home too.
"Keira?" He said under his breath.
He watched as she kept on going, ahead of him. He stayed a distance from her but close enough to keep an eye on her.
I saw her walk towards a store, some kind of cafe or something. She walked in and I watched from outside. She dug through her pockets and looked for something, her wallet maybe?
She ordered and finally, she pulled out a few coins and handed them to the cashier. The cashier handed her a bag with food and a drink. She walked out of the store and towards our school again. I sat down on one of the benches and watched as she walked out of the school with two boys, younger ones.
She stopped them on their way to the park and handed them both a donut, she crushed the bag and threw it in the trash, I figured that she'd bought the drink for herself, but I was wrong.
They went to a picnic table and the two boys ate happily, one reached out to her with the donut and it seemed like he asked her to take a bite, but she said no. They seemed to be arguing slightly, him telling her to have some and she saying no. Finally she gave in, she took it and took a bite into it. But as I looked closer, she really didn't, she just faked it, but the boy believed.
She set the drink down in front of them while she took out her own water bottle and drank from that. I never realized she had a soft side, but now I know why, I decided I might as well walk over there.
"Keira.... Hey," I say sitting down beside her.
"Oh hi," She replies quietly as she looks at her brothers.
They finish their donuts and she moves her head, tilting it slightly to the park. They smile, each taking a sip of their drink, then running over to the swing set to play.
She looks to me. "What do you want?"
I'm confused, she seemed so kind, generous, different. Now she's acting like how she acts with me normally. I wouldn't understand if she didn't tell me, but I couldn't make her either.
"I wanted to know, who are those boys?" I asked trying to start up conversation.
"They're my brothers," she ended her sentence abruptly. That was clearly the end of that conversation.
"Okay..." I couldn't say much more. "Um... did you want me to bring you home?"
This seemed to brighten her mood a little bit, but not too much. "If you want to," Came the reply.
I don't know why she was acting like this, I would have to look into it, maybe ask Samara. I thought that I might as well. Keira got up and walked over to the park and called the boys over. They got their own backpacks on and Keira did too. I had mine on the whole time so I just got up and we walked.
At first, it was silent, but I enjoyed how it wasn't awkward. Why? I don't know. I just decided to keep silent as we walked, waiting for her to start a conversation. Her brothers walked in front of her and she only stared ahead, not seeming to do much. I could only wonder if this is how she chose to live, quiet and pretty much alone.
I sat in my bed, I had sent my brothers to my aunt and uncle, I didn't want them to be spending a whole weekend with my father and I. Especially since I had so much to do, and since I couldn't take them. They'd probably be better off without me anyway, they'd enjoy themselves with their cousins.
I smiled as I replayed the memory of Joshua walking me home, it was kind of him and it really helped me for some reason.
Ding Came the notification from my phone.
Samara: Hey, how was it today? Have you told him yet? Are you going to tell him anything? Sorry for the many questions but I'm concerned.
Me: I'm fine, you? I have not told him anything yet, not much anyways. It's okay. I know you're concerned, and in a sense, I'm glad you are. I know I can trust you and you'll always have my back. Sorry for the inactivity.
I put down the phone and sat there, just staring at the ceiling. I was just drifting off when I heard a scream. I heard the pounding of steps up the stairs. I knew what was happening, and at this point. I'd just given up.
The door banged open and I stared at the man in the doorway. Before I knew it, I was out. Out like a light.
