Part 21
Dongwoo POV
Eleven Years Ago
After Hoya gave me permission to go to the inner gardens, I quickly made my way towards the pond. I have no idea what it is I'm supposed to find here, but I have a feeling this is very important.
As I approached the pond, I saw two figures waiting there. "Who are you?" I nervously called out to them.
The two figures took a step forward into the light. "Thank you for coming, Jang Dongwoo" the man smiled at me.
"How do you know who I am?"
"Father" the woman teared up. "It's me..... Daeun."
"Daeun?" I took a closer look at her and was surprised. Although she was much older, she was definitely my Daeun. "But how?" I was confused as to what was happening.
She came over to me and took my hands. "I was the one who wrote you the letter."
I stumbled backwards a bit. So I hadn't been wrong. It was her handwriting.
"Father!" she shouted as she and the young man helped me to regain my balance.
"Perhaps it would be best if we sat down" the young man suggested.
"Yes" I nodded. "That sounds like a good idea." After we had all sat down, I asked "Who is this young man?"
He quickly stood up and said "Please forgive me for not properly introducing myself." Then he made a large formal bow to me. "My name is Lee Sungyeol and I am your daughter's husband."
"Husband?" I shouted as I looked between them.
"Yes, father" she smiled at me. "There is so much I need to tell you" she started to cry.
I wrapped my arms around her and held her tightly. "It's okay" I said as I began to understand what was happening. After comforting her for a little bit, I asked "I don't have much time left, do I?" She just looked up at me in shock. "I should have told you that I was sick sooner, but you are still so young."
"It's okay" she managed to say. "King Hoya took really good care of me."
"Hoya?" I chuckled. "He's letting you call him that now?"
She giggled as well "He didn't really have a choice."
My smile faded "What do you mean? Why didn't he have a choice? What happened?"
"Father" she composed herself. "I came here to tell you that I can't marry Sungjong."
I looked at the guy sitting beside her "Is it because of this guy?"
"Yes" she smiled.
"Why would you give up marrying Sungjong for him? What makes him better than the one I have chosen for you?"
"Father" she gently placed her hands on mine. "Sungjong is a great guy, but he's not the one for me. He already has someone he is in love with and they deserve to be together." She took a deep breath before continuing "My heart belongs to Sungyeol and I plan to be at his side."
Not wanting to disappoint my daughter, I looked at the young man sitting beside her. "Your name is Sungyeol?"
"Yes sir" he replied eloquently.
"What is your position?"
He looked at Daeun nervously and she nodded to him. He took a deep breath before saying "I am King Lee Sungyeol."
King? What is he talking about? I thought Hoya was the King.
Daeun POV
I knew that my father would be confused by all this. "Father, I know this is a bit confusing...."
"A bit?" his eyes widened.
"Do you remember what happened when you brought me to the palace a couple of days ago?"
He thought for a moment and then nodded "You fell into a pond."
"Yes" I nodded. "This is the pond I fell into" I gestured to the pond in front of us. Then I took a deep breath before saying what had to be said. "When I fell into the pond, I traveled back in time over a thousand years and met Lee Sungyeol. He gave me this norigae and asked me to be his bride."
I could tell that my father was trying to process what I had just said. "You traveled back in time?"
"Yes" I replied.
"But why? Why you?"
"I don't know why it was me" I smiled "But I'm glad it was. I love Sungyeol and I'm happy to be his wife."
Tears started to fall from his eyes. "So, you....you are...."
"I'm Queen Jang" I tearfully smiled.
My father began to sob uncontrollably. I leaned forward and tried to comfort him. When he finally regained his composure, he asked "Are you sure this is what you really want?"
"Yes, I'm sure" I replied.
"Then I better go tell Hoya that we should stop trying to marry you and Sungjong" he smiled. We all stood up and my father gave me a hug. "You are the most beautiful Queen I've ever seen" he started to tear up. "I hope the two of you will be very happy together."
"We will" I choked up. "I promise."
My father gave me a peck on the cheek, then said "Goodbye" and walked away.
We stood by the pond and waited until my father was out of sight. "Are you ready?" Sungyeol asked.
Just as I was about to say yes, we heard rustling in the bushes. When we went over to see who it was, I was shocked to see "Sungjong!"
"How do you know my name? Who are you?" he asked nervously.
I smiled and said "I'm just a dream."
Sungjong blushed "You are a very pretty dream."
