CHAPTER SEVEN
The wicked grin on my face never left its place as I listened to screams the demon that I was killing. A cold laugh left my lips when I watch the dust from the demon's remains hit the ground. I used my super-Reaper hearing to listen to the other demons as they ran away from me. They couldn't teleport or use any of their demon powers - another Reaper power: I could immobilize a demon's power. I haven't tried it with other downworlders yet; demons have more energy and more energy equals more power for me.
When I heard the sound of thundering footsteps and I used my sense of smell to confirm that it was the demons that I was hunting, I activated my invisibility rune and started to run after the demon. I loved the chase, it is exhilarating and thrilling. It didn't take long for me to spot the demon and I used my telekinesis to throw him into an alley that he was running past. By the time I reached the alley, the demon was quivering in fear.
"Please, don't do this." He begged and a cold laugh left my lips.
"Did you stop when that woman begged you to?" I snarled, making him flinch. My eyes shot to my hair line as I saw tears starting to fall from his eyes. You see, this was how I started to hunt the three demons. They were trying to kill a mundane for her blood. Now, I don't care about the mundane or anything else but I do care about my secret staying safe. And although mundanes are naïve, they are not stupid.
I didn't even give the demon chance to say anything else before I stretched out my hand and started absorbing his energy. With power buzzing through my blood, I made my way to the small restaurant that I have been eating at for the last seven nights. It didn't take long for the preppy mundane waitress to make her way to me, the one that talked to me while I sat here. "The usual?" She asked and I nodded unemotionally. Another effect for the Reaper side was that I couldn't smile, I could smirk but that's it.
It has been a week exactly since I jumped out of that warehouse and left my family behind. With each day that passed, I felt more freedom than anything else. And, yes, I still remember my family and Alec for those who were wondering. The waitress, Aria I think her name is, placed my cup of coffee in front of me and I took a quick glance at the name tag only to see that I was right. But what caught my attention was the blush on her cheeks.
"So, what hot guy did you spot now?" I asked, knowing that if I didn't, she'd pout and then start ranting about me not paying attention to her. Then she'd start to rant about what ever hot she spotted. She could never understand why I didn't think that any of the guys was hot. One could learn in a lot in a week but that particular conversation was one we had on the third day. I also told her that I'm not interested and even if I was, blonde hair and blue eyes was not my type. Try, raven hair and hazel eyes. Stranger, eh?
"I'm not telling you." Aria told me sternly.
"Why?" I asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"Because," She spluttered. "They take one look at you and they're goners. You are beautiful and you've got a rocking body. But you don't do anything about it." She frowned as if that confused her greatly.
"I told you-"
"You're not interested. Yeah, yeah, I know." The waitress said with a wave of her hand and a roll of her eyes. She looked up and froze as she spotted something behind me. Her jaw went slack and her eyes unimaginably wide. I was about turn around when a voice rang out behind me, freezing me in my spot.
"And for good reason, she's married." Like a tidal wave, my emotions came back and hit me full force at the sound of that voice. His voice. Regret. Pain. Hurt. Love. Tears filled my eyes but I wouldn't let them fall. Too afraid that this was a really nasty dream that I would wake up from any moment.
"Someone please tell me this is real." I whispered in a pleading voice thick with emotion. Aria came out of her stupor and looked at me with wide eyes. It was the first time in the week that she's known me she heard me speak in a tone other than blunt and emotionless.
"If by real you mean that the guy whose picture fills up your home screen, is standing behind you, then yeah. It's real." She gave me an encouraging smile and slowly, I turned around. I sucked in a sharp breath of air as the dams finally back.
"Alec..." I choked out brokenly. He still looked the same, a little pale, but the same. Then something extraordinary happened. He smiled, and my world lit up again as all the broken pieces of my heart started to fall back into their original place. He opened his eyes and I practically flew of the chair and into his embrace. I hugged him tightly and fisted his t-shirt in my hands. I felt his back muscles flex as he wrapped his arms around me.
I closed my eyes and then simultaneously we released sighs of relief mixed with content. Then it hit me. He's here. He's really here and he's okay. To think, I almost lost him. And so, for the first time since I woke up from my semi-coma, I started to cry quietly. My body shook and my husband tightened his grip on me but not a sound came from me. I've never been a loud crier.
Eventually, after just holding him, I pulled away from him. He moved his hands down to my waist and locked his arms around me, and pulled me against him - not that I minded one bit - while I looked at him with awe and wonder in my eyes. A slow smile started to spread on my face as I came to the full realization that he is real. It didn't take long for Alec to mimic me.
A throat cleared behind us, "So, married?" Her tone was accusatory and I winced a bit. Now that I have my emotions back on, it's going to be a lot harder to just leave her. I'll have to come back, if only to come and talk to her.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to her with a smile and Alec moved so that he was besides me, a hand around my waist. "Yes, married." I confirmed and she looked at me strangely. "Aria, meet my husband Alec. Alec, meet Aria." A wave of territorial satisfaction rolled through me when I called Alec my husband.
"That's the first time I've seen you smiled." She told me and I finally understood why she looked at me strangely. "And you never told me you're married. I wouldn't have tried to set you up with guys if I knew."
"You did what?" My husband seethed at her, a glare on his face as he tightened his grip on me, bringing me closer into his side.
"Oh, shut up, Alec." I told him feeling a little annoyed and lightly swatting him on his chest. He winced slightly and I gave him an apologetic look before continuing with my ranting. "I would never, ever go on a date with someone who isn't you. With or without feelings." I told him stern look and my husband smiled that ridiculously goofy smile that had my knees weakening and had the power to make me do anything.
I turned back to Aria, "First time I've had a reason to smile." I explained with a shrug. "And you never asked if I was married. If you did, I would have told you."
"You could have told me." She retorted, crossing her arms over her chest, giving me a glare and I laughed lightly.
"And how would have gone? Hello, my name is Sam and I'm married." I said with raised eyebrows. "Yeah, I don't think so. That's not just information you just go handing out to everyone. Besides, it was something I didn't like talking about." I added on. "And still don't." I said when she opened her mouth to ask another question.
"Fine," The waitress finally huffed out. "So, Alec." She turned to my husband. "You got any hot brothers?" She asked, looking my husband up and down appreciatively. I scowled deeply and moved in front of him.
"He's mine." I told her possessively and her eyes widened.
She held her hands up in surrender, "I know that's why I'm asking." I nodded, realizing that I was wrong.
"Well, he does have a brother but he's not hot." I told her, thinking about Max. "Besides I thought your type was, 'blonde hair and blue hair'."
"I'll be the judge of that. And some branching out never hurt anyone." She told me, a dreamy look in her eyes.
"He's ten." I heard Alec deadpan behind me and I laughed heartily at the horrified expression on her face. "But what about, Jace? He has blonde hair and blue eyes."
"Jace is my brother." I said, turning to my husband and he placed his arms on my waist while I hooked my thumbs through is jean loops.
"Yeah, but we're par- brother's-in-law."
"No, Alec. I know you don't like Clary, but she is his girlfriend."
"Not anymore, she's not." At Alec's words, my worry levels shot through the roof and my jaw slackened.
"Why? What happened?" I asked him hurriedly.
"Apparently she kept bothering him while he was looking for you. And he just got tried of him. At least that's what he told me on the way here." My mood immediately brightened even more at the mention of my brother.
"Is he here?" I asked excitedly and Alec chuckled, butterflies soared in my stomach at the sound.
"No," My mood dampened a little. "But he is waiting for us at Magnus'." I smiled brightly once again at the news.
"So," Aria started behind us, stretching the 'o'. With wide eyes, I unhooked my thumbs and turned back to her. I completely forgot she was there. "If you are anything to go by, your brother will be plenty to look at." I rolled my eyes and took my phone out of my back jeans pocket. I opened my phone and my gallery before pulling up a picture of my brother and showed it to her.
"Holy mother of all that is good and glorious." She said, clearly awestruck. It was a pretty good picture though. He was smiling widely, his arms out stretched to his sides, his blonde hair blowing with the window. It was taken a month after my memories were back. Me and Jace decided to have a sibling bonding day and we went to the park. We swinged, played catch between the two of us and even held a contest for who could climb the highest up to a tree. I won because I'm smaller and lighter as opposed to his bulky frame. "Please, can I meet him. I'll be good I swear."
At her pleading tone, I nearly caved in. "Let me first see how he's dealing with the break up and then maybe." She grinned widely at me, bouncing on her heels excitedly.
"A maybe is better that a no."
