49- "Of Course, Seaweed Brain. Any More Stupid Questions?"

The next day was spent with Luke. I woke up before breakfast, got dressed quietly in some comfy grey tracksuit pants and a large green hoodie and went straight to Luke's cell. Percy would know where to find me when he woke up.

Luke was lying down on his bed staring up at the ceiling when I arrived.

"You don't need to be here so early," His head flopped to the side so he could look at me. "I'm not going anywhere."

The guard opened the door for me. I crossed the cell and sat on the edge of the bed. "You're going to be killed. That means that I need to spend as much time with you as possible."

He rolled his eyes. "I'm not going anywhere for a while. At least a month. I have to wait at least a month."

I closed my eyes, my shoulders sagging. I brought my legs up and rested my chin on my knees. "I'm so sorry."

"Hey, hey," He scooted over and placed an arm around my shoulder. I rested my head on his shoulder. "It's not your fault."

"It is," I whispered. "I'm the one that sentenced you to death."

"But I'm the one that asked you to. I'm the one that earned it."

I shook my head slightly. Tears brimmed in my eyes. I felt that if I cried any more I'd turn into a dried up human being. "You don't deserve death."

"Annabeth, you can't blame yourself for this. You can't. I won't allow it."

I opened my eyes and stared into his cold blue ones. "I'm sorry."

"I am too." He hugged me and sighed against my hair. "For everything."

I left Luke a couple of hours after lunchtime. I didn't want to leave him, but I had to prepare for battle.

Capture the Flag was a very important annual game held at the palace. The three Chase siblings and three Jackson siblings would face off to the death. That's what we like to tell everyone.

What really happens is the six of us are split into two teams, red or blue, and given territories to protect. Somewhere in your team's territory, you have to hide the flag of your team. There are boundaries and rules of what you can and can't do, and that sits in a book in Percy's desk. We wrote them out when we were twelve. You can have weapons too. A sword, dagger, or bow and arrow. They're made out of foam, but it's still super fun. You win the game by stealing your oppositions flag and safely take it back to your own base. The winners get to choose their own prize, within reason. One year Zoe wanted a unicorn, but we couldn't get her one so she had to settle for a toy unicorn instead.

When I got to my room Percy was sitting on my bed waiting for me. He was wearing denim shorts and a green t-shirt.

"Hey," He stood up and hugged me. "We're wearing the same colour."

"Uh," I looked down at my hoodie. "I guess we are."

He could tell that I didn't really care and that I wasn't really there. He pulled me in again for another hug. "Did you just see Luke?"

I nodded.

"I can't tell you how sorry I am. You know that. Luke still loves you, I still love you." He lent down and kissed my forehead. "So, so much."

I was about to break again so I pushed him away smiling. "What's happening today? When do we start?"

He smiled back at me, glad to see that I was trying. "Just get changed into your normal gear and we shall meet the kids in my bedroom."

"If we're on opposite teams this year, I hope you know that I will crush you." I gave him a light kiss on the lips. "No matter how much I love you."

He smirked. "We'll see about that."

I changed into denim shorts just like Percy but kept the hoodie on. We would change into our team's shirts later on. I laced up my runners, grabbed Percy's hand and went up to his room for part one of the games to begin.

All four children were waiting excitedly for us in Percy's room. When we opened the door, Zoe jumped up and ran over to us to give us a hug.

"Took you lovebirds long enough," Bobby rolled his eyes. He walked over out of his cast. My whole family had recovered in record time from the car accident they had near the start of the Selection and they were all out of their casts and wheelchairs. It was good to see Bobby walking around again. "How are you?" He hugged me. "I watched it, and I'm sorry."

I gave him a sad smile. "I'm better now that we're going to play.'

Matthew gave me a hug as well. "We're going to beat you."

I ruffled his hair and stuck out my tongue. "Yeah right. When pigs fly."

"Alright! Everybody over here!" Percy called. He had dragged his desk over to the bed so three people could sit on the bed and three of us could sit on the other side on some chairs Tyson had stolen from somewhere.

Zoe, Bobby and Tyson sat down on the bed so that left Matthew, Percy and I to sit on the chairs. Percy put down a large piece of paper on the desk and handed me the pen. I was always the one to write everything down.

"So," I started, smiling at everyone. We all had big smiles on our faces and a glint in our eyes that told everyone that we had been waiting for a year for this game. It was a pretty big thing in our household. All staff knew about it and made sure to stay clear of the hallways as they could easily walk into a sword fight. I looked at the writing on the paper. It had a list of the previous teams from four years before. "Last years teams were Bobby, Tyson and me and then Percy, Zoe and Matthew. Due to the previous years, the teams this year will end up being Percy, Tyson and me versus Bobby, Matthew and Zoe."

I looked at Zoe sadly. "Your mum has banned you from this game-"

She shook her head, her piggy-tails swishing around and hitting her face. "No, no! Mummy said I could play!"

I gasped exaggerating my excitement. Why would Sally let her play? "Wow! Do you know why?"

She shook her head no and clapped her hands excitedly. I looked over at Percy. His smile was brighter than everyone elses. "Do you know why she can play all of a sudden?"

"No," He shook his head shrugging. "No idea.

He was lying.

"Okay then. Are we happy with these teams then?" I asked everybody. I would talk to him about that later.

Bobby put up his hand. "'I think it should be you two against us four."

I raised my eyebrows and glanced at Percy to see his reaction. He looked pleased. "And why is that?"

"You're both practically eighteen now. We want to take you on." Tyson interjected. He glanced at Percy and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Percy nod slightly in approval.

Did Percy make a secret alliance with his brother? Did they plan this? Did they all? Are they going to betray me?

"This year's teams are Bobby, Matthew, Tyson and Zoe versus Percy and me." I wrote the name down on the piece of paper. "Seeing as we have the least amount of people on our team, I think it's only fair that we get to choose where we hide our flag."

"Outside," Percy said straightaway. I looked over at him. What the Hades is going on?

"So then you guys get inside. The game starts at six o'clock." I smiled at the kids and thought about how we were going to crush them so hard. Percy went into his wardrobe to get the team shirts and flag. "We have three hours to prepare. Chiron will sound the horn."

Percy threw four purple shirts at them and a red flag.

"Aren't we meant to have purple shirts and a blue flag?" Matthew asked.

Percy frowned. "I want orange shirts and I want the blue flag."

We all rolled our eyes.

He bent down and pulled out a box from underneath his bed. It was filled to the top with foam daggers, swords, arrows and other weapons. A couple of bows lay in there too.

I grinned and pushed Tyson out of the way so I could get to the box first. I pulled out a small dagger that I had used every year. The handle was made out of plastic but the actual blade was harmless. Percy picked a long sword, Tyson found a club type thing and Zoe picked out a sword, a little bit shorter than Percy's. Bobby opted for a bow and grabbed a handful of arrows and Matthew took a dagger just like mine.

"Good luck," I smirked and found Percy's hand. I led him out of his bedroom and opened the door of mine.

He closed it behind him.

I turned around and pointed my dagger at his throat, glaring at him. "Why were you lying to me?"

"Huh?" His Adam's apple bobbed up and down as he gulped. He glanced down at the dagger.

"About Zoe. Why is she allowed to play?"

"I guess mum had a change of heart?"

I scoffed. "As if. You said something to her, didn't you?"

He scrunched his eyebrows together. "No. Of course, not."

I looked at him in disbelief.

"I'm the one that got hurt by her craziness, remember? Why would I want to take away her punishment?" He raised his eyebrows at me as if to say see, I have reasons. Try and find a fault in that one.

I found many faults in that one.

"Fine," I gave him one last look then turned around swiftly. I pulled out my chair at my desk and sat down, getting paper and pens to write our strategy. "Let's get started."

He sat down cautiously next to me. "What are you thinking?"

I played with the pen in between my fingers and thumb, looking down at the empty paper. "I think we should focus on offence. They'll split up into twos but if we move quick enough we have the skill to overpower two and get the flag."

He was staring at me and I knew that he wasn't paying attention because of the vacant look in his eyes.

He noticed me looking and snapped back. "Are you okay?" He asked, placing a warm hand on my shoulder.

I sighed and my shoulders sagged. "Just sucks. He's going to be killed."

"Yeah," Percy looked out of his window at a bird flying by. "He is."

We sat in silence for a few moments.

"Back to the plan," I wrote down my plan on the paper and moved it so Percy could see. "What do you think?"

He read it and I watched as his face fell. "All offence?" He muttered, I almost didn't hear him. He seemed really nervous. He kept fidgeting with his fingers and shorts.

"Oi," I punched his shoulder lightly. "Whats wrong?"

"Will there be time for us to defend?" He rushed out.

I looked at the plan I had written. Most of it was offence, not defence.

"You want us to stand alone and defend?" I asked him curiously as to what was actually going on.

"Yep," He nodded and our eyes connected. He looked away quickly. "We need time to defend. Together. Alone."

"Okay," I said slowly, writing down a new plan on the piece of paper. "We will have time to defend our flag. Together. Alone."

He seemed satisfied with my answer.

I brushed away my concern for his sanity and placed it down as just nervousness to win.

Percy and I spent the next hour planning what we were going to do. We decided that as soon as the horn blew we would find their flag and steal it. Percy would go in first and distract the two standing guard whilst I tried to be invisible and try and steal the flag. We'd then run back together. If we had to, we would fight the two guards but we decided to try and stall them first. We think that they'll put the flag up on the rooftop because it has the most height and you can only access it from one door. Because we'd be gone from our base, we picked a high spot to place our flag. On the highest branch that I could climb up to of the big pine tree next to the pool. Hopefully, by the time the two attacked to find it, we'll be back to defend and win. Whether it ended up being Tyson or Zoe, or the twins they wouldn't think to look up because they would only look at their eye level and down. They'd probably look in the forest first because they would think we'd hide it somewhere where there is no cover, not out in the open next to the pool.

The next couple of hours after the final plan was decided on was spent talking and playing around. We had a sword fight for some practice and we talked about Luke. Percy wanted some war paint on his face, so I out put a streak of black paint under each of his eyes. Percy said he's been discussing Luke's execution with his mother and I won the first fight by distracting Percy. I had the dagger pressed up against his throat when he told me he loved me and we kissed for a bit. It felt good to forget about the worries of Luke and his near ending life, and of the game that would either end in my win or lose. And even the Selection and the looming thought that Percy would propose to either three of us in the next few days.

I checked the clock on my bedside table. "We better get down to our tree."

I helped Percy off the ground and we walked out the door. We could hear the kids laughter from Tyson's room next door. They hadn't left yet.

We were about to leave the hallway when Percy stopped. "Oh! I forgot something. Wait here."

I watched his retreating figure, a back of orange, as it disappeared into his room. A couple of seconds he returned with nothing in his hands.

"What did you forget?" I asked as we started to walk together again.

"Nothing," He waved my question away. "You don't need to worry about it."

As we were climbing down the stairs I couldn't help but notice the box-shaped lump in his pocket.

My heart stopped as my brain came to a conclusion.

Is that a ring?

That would explain why Percy wanted for us to be alone. Because he wants to...propose. Propose?! As in ask me to marry him?! This might turn out to be one of the best capture the flag games in all of history.

"Are you sure this is safe?" Percy yelled from the bottom of the pine tree.

From a couple of branches up I already had a great view. The sky was an explosion of orange and yellow as the sun slowly set off to the west. The green tops of the trees of the forest spread out far and wide and the pool looked so good I thought about going for a swim. Maybe later.

"Yes!" I yelled back down. The flag was in between my teeth. "It's safe!"

"Well, I just want you to know that I'm ready to catch you if you fall. Or maybe I'll just go down with you!"

I smiled at his concern and found a place to put my foot. A few more branches up and I found the perfect place to put the flag.

I climbed back down and looked up at the flag, my hands on my hips. "Happy?"

Percy wasn't looking at the flag but at me. "Very."

I rolled my eyes and held out my hand from my dagger. Percy placed it in my hand and before he could even think oh, my gods I had judo flipped him.

He lay on his back groaning as I knelt next to him.

He started to laugh and I smiled as I watched his mouth open and his hair flop onto his forehead. "Don't I get a kiss for good luck? It's kind of a tradition right?"

I looked up at the palace and the looming prospect of getting beaten by a bunch of six to fourteen-year-olds. "Come back a victor, Seaweed Brain. Then we'll see."

I helped him up and we both looked at the front doors of the palace that we would have to sprint towards.

The horn sounded from somewhere in the palace. The sound echoed through the gardens. The first one meant ten seconds to go until the games begin.

"Percy, you're armour is crooked." I sighed and straightened the plastic chest plate he had on.

"Thanks, Wise Girl." He flashed me a troublemaker grin.

I didn't want to wait any longer. I grabbed both is his cheeks with my hand and pulled his face towards mine. I kissed him as the mental clock counted down.

5, 4, 3...

I pulled back and sprinted off in the direction of the fronts doors once the final horn sounded leaving a dazed Percy behind.

"Come on, Seaweed Brain!"

I heard his footsteps behind me and quickly he caught up. We bolted up the stairs and ran down the corridor of the first floor.

The adrenaline started to pump through my veins as I pushed my legs forward. I laughed as we ran, running free of my worries. Just liked Percy kissed me free of my worries. My hair flew behind me and I enjoyed the fact that it was just me and Percy. Percy and I fighting together.

Percy turned the corner to go up the stairs first and I followed. I crashed into his back and nearly sent both of us flying to the ground.

"Wha-" But my question was cut off by a scream.

A scream coming from a little girl running towards us with her sword raised in battle.

My eyes widened and my body immediately stood in a defensive stance. Percy stood next to me, his sword raised.

Zoe ran towards us, the twins and Tyson the following suit. All crying a battle cry. We did not expect all four of them. They were all wearing the same as us. A plastic chest plate. Zoe even had black paint marks on her cheeks, like Percy. They wore their purple team's shirts underneath.

Matthew and Tyson went for Percy and Zoe and Bobby went for me.

Zoe was the first to swing. I easily ducked and kicked out my leg, hitting her in the ankle. No matter how small and young she is, we fight her the same way we would anyone. She told us that we could, that we could take her. If I was fighting Percy I would have kicked hard enough for him to lose his balance, but because it was Zoe I only gave her a little bit of force. Nothing to hurt her. I narrowly ducked an arrow that came flying towards my head from Bobby's bow as I stood up. It hit the wall behind me with a thud and fell to the ground. I slashed my dagger towards Zoe's arm but she spun around. She was now facing Percy and I's backs. I didn't get a chance to attack her again as an arrow was launched at me again. It hit my forearm and even though it causes no pain and fell to the ground bouncing off my arm, I cried out in pain just as the rule book said to.

Percy's head swivelled towards me and his eyes saw the arrow on the ground. I dropped my dagger as my hand came flying to the supposedly bleeding wound. Percy's eyes widened and he turned towards me, forgetting about the people who were attacking us.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Zoe's sword go for the small of Percy's back. Without thinking, I dived in front of him. The sword connected with my skin and I fell to the ground with a thud.

Percy spun around to face me wide eye. He growled and stood over me. "Get back!" He shouted and slashed the air in a wide arc, driving the kids away from us. "No one touches her."

I wasn't in any pain. The sword was made out of foam, but I was warmed by Percy's tone. It was protective and honestly, scary.

The others looked at each other worried. I flashed a quick thumbs up to Zoe, impressed by her work. She giggled.

Percy scrunched up his nose at her and stepped one step closer to her. She screamed and yelled, "Retreat!" Before running up the stairs, her teammates following after her.

Percy dropped by my side. "You okay, Wise Girl?"

I shuffled over to the wall and leaned against it, looking up at Percy who was kneeling in front of me. I was cradling the spot where Zoe had stabbed me. Percy's eyes brows were scrunched together.

"You're cute when you're worried," I muttered, my fingers brushed against his brow. "Your eyebrows get all scrunched together."

"Why'd you take that knife?" He asked. They could have run up behind us but we didn't care.

"You would have done the same for me."

Our moment was ruined by the sound of high heels clicking on the floor. Rachel and Calypso rounded the corner and stopped short when they saw us.

Percy stiffened. Their eyes found me leaning against the wall looking injured. Then Percy who still looked worried. They scanned the sword and dagger lying next to us and our chest plates, and then they found the arrows lying on the floor.

"Wha-" Rachel asked but I interrupted her.

"It's best if you don't ask questions." I nodded solemnly to her. "I  also think it's best if you return to your rooms and not come out until morning."

They both stared at us in shock for another moment then nodded their heads, quickly walking off to their rooms.

"Come on." I have Percy a kiss on the cheek. "Let's go back to our flag. We need to re-think our strategy."

Percy took my hand and helped me up. We took our weapons and jogged back to the tree.

It was dark outside now, the sky was lit up by thousands of twinkling stars millions of light years away. Lights were on, casting an eerily glow across the gardens. The pool was lit up and the water cast weird reflections across the tiles.

"What are we going to do now?" He brushed a hand through his hair.

I surveyed the area. "I think they'll attack us now. Best to defend for a bit."

"Good."

We walked around the pool for a bit, checking the bushes surrounding us to make sure there were no little children hiding that we're going to jump out and stab us.

Percy pushed me towards the pool. I screamed and flung out my hand. He caught it with his fast reflexes and I hung out over the edge of the pool, pleading with Percy to not let go of my hand as if he did, I would go toppling into the water. I didn't want that.

"See?" He cocked an eyebrow at me. "I told you I would catch you if you fell."

My heart swelled but I didn't get to say anything because we both heard a giggle from around the corner of the palace.

Percy's head swivelled towards the noise and he nearly let go of me, but I screamed just in time. He pulled me up and wrapped an arm around my waist. "Guess it's now or never." He muttered under his breath.

I didn't hear him. I moved away from him and walked closer over to the tree and flag, crouching down slightly so if any arrows were aimed at me I could swiftly duck them.

"I've been thinking." Percy ran up behind me and placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Shh," I brushed his hand off whilst searching for any signs of an attack. The other team could sneak up on us very easily.

"No, I'm serious. I'm going to ask you a question and I need your attention." His voice changed. He was nervous. Why was he so nervous?

My eyebrows scrunched up together as I turned towards him. Butterflies erupted in my stomach. Was what I thought was going to happen actually happen?

He searched my eyes for a few seconds then let out a long breath. "What do you see in your future?"

That took me a little bit by surprise. What do I see in my future?

I stared back at those sea-green eyes that I love so much. When I was little I dreamed of having an equal in life. A person who I could trust, who I could confide in. A person who was my other half. Maybe my other half is right in front of me, in plastic armour with black paint smudged under his eyes.

"Architecture," I said. "Marriage, love. "I took a deep breath. "You."

He had a small smile growing on his lips. "Do you want to know what I see in my future?" He took my hands and pulled me closer to him. He came so close that our foreheads were touching and my breath mingled with his. I nodded slowly, the breath being sucked out of my lungs.

"Queen Annabeth Jackson."

My breath caught in my throat as he got down on one knee. He pulled out a small grey box from his pocket and opened it up. Inside the box was a small bead. The bead was painted grey and on the bead was a painting of a ring.

"I know it's not a ring." He was smiling so bright. I was smiling so bright. "You'll hopefully get one on Friday. And we normally pick out a bead at new years, but I figured I could make an exception. Annabeth, after what happened when we-" He cleared his throat. "went away, I realised that I couldn't live without you. I can't move, speak, think and breathe without you. I can't believe it took this stupid Selection for me to finally act on my feelings towards you. I'm in love with you, Annabeth. I'm in love with everything about you, your perfect flaws. I choose you. And I'll choose you over and over, forever. Without hesitation, without a doubt, in a heartbeat. I choose you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to build something permanent with you." I laughed a little, tears streaming down my cheeks. I felt like I was on cloud nine. "As best friends, king and queen, husband and wife. Annabeth, my Wise Girl, will you marry me?"

I didn't waste a second on my answer. I've been dreaming about this since my name was selected, since out first (second) kiss, since he told me he was in love with me.

"Of course, Seaweed Brain. Any more stupid questions?"

He let out a beautiful laugh as he stood up and un-clipped my necklace. I watched with absolute bliss and adoration as he gently slid the bead onto my necklace and placed it back around my neck. I couldn't wait any longer. I looped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer, kissing him with all the love I have for him.

We were too busy kissing and basking in the glory of being engaged to notice the bustle in the bush and the little giggles.

"FOR PEANUT BUTTER!" Tyson cried as he aimed his club at Percy and I. We pulled apart startled and watched as three kids came charging at us. We were bombarded by Bobby's arrows and didn't notice Zoe sneaking up on us from my left.

"MWHAHAHA." She cried an evil laugh as she pushed Percy and me back. We stumbled and slipped, falling back into the pool with a splash.

And it was pretty much the best underwater kiss of all time.

Percy held out his hand for me to take. I grabbed it and he helped pull me out of the pool. I looked down at my soaking clothes. "Seriously?"

"Hey," He took my hands and placed them on his shoulders. His hands crept around my waist. He nuzzled his face into the crook of my neck. "I love you."

"I love-" I was interrupted by the sound of a horn signalling the end of the game. I gasped and pulled away from Percy. "They won!"

He spun around with wide eyes and searched the tree for the flag. "They took it while we were under!"

My hand flew up to my open mouth shocked. We had lost the game. They won. "Oh, my gods."

I watched as Percy kicked a stone defeated. His wet jet black hair was falling in front of his eyes and he pushed it away with his hand. His t-shit clung to his torso and his sea-green eyes found mine and softened. I hadn't lost at all. I had won him. I had won Percy Jackson and he is going to be my husband.

We walked hand in hand up to the palace, not saying anything. We were both thinking of the future. Of our wedding and coronation, of our achievements as partners in crime as king and queen and thinking of our children. I was even thinking about the end. A long, peaceful life with my best friend.

Someone had set up a campfire on the rooftop and the kids were laughing as they danced around it, our blue flag clutched tightly in Zoe's hand.

"Here they are!" Zoe called out, poking her tongue out at us as we stood in the doorway. "The losers!"

Percy laughed and left my side to go tickle his little sister. She squealed and ran away.

Bobby and Matthew appeared out of nowhere and raised their eyebrows at me, their arms crossed over their chests. "Was there a reason as to why you two were kissing during a very important game?" Matthew asked.

I blushed and looked away. "No."

"Yeah right," Bobby rolled his eyes. "You wouldn't-" He stopped short when he noticed the new bead on my necklace. "Is that a ri-"

"No." I turned away from both of them so they couldn't see the necklace. I wanted the engagement to stay a secret for a little bit longer.

"Oh, gods. It is!" Matthew forcefully spun me around and they both stared at the new addition.

"Did he propose?" Bobby nearly screamed it out.

My eyes widened as Percy slowed his running and turned towards us. Zoe looked at us curiously and Tyson's attention was on us too.

I sighed and nodded, the blush not leaving my cheeks. "Yes. Percy proposed."

All four kids erupted into a chaotic loud group of children. Zoe pushed Percy over to me and gave us a massive hug. She was crying. Tyson was crying too as he joined the hug. Soon all six of us were apart of a family hug.

"You did it, Percy!" The way Matthew said it made me think that he had already known before I told him.

"Wait," I stepped back from the hug. "Did you guys already know?"

Tyson nodded. "Yes. Brother told us his plan."

My jaw slightly dropped as I turned to look at Percy. "That's why you guys were acting weird while we planned tonight."

"I didn't actually think he would do it though." Bobby shrugged then winced when Percy slapped him upside the head.

A gush of wind swept through and I shivered. Percy noticed and steered me towards the fire, getting a chair for us to sit in. Everyone else grabbed one and we sat around the fire to make smores.

I snuggled closer to Percy's chest hearing his steady heartbeat. I could stay wrapped in his arms for eternity.

"So," Percy said. "What's going to be your prize this year?"

Zoe giggled happily as she licked chocolate off her fingertips. "I want to be a flower girl at your wedding!"

"Oh oh!" Bobby and Matthew said in unison.

"Can we page boys or something?" Matthew asked.

Tyson puffed out his chest and wiggled his eyebrows. "I'm going to be best man."

Percy laughed with me. "Best man? Sorry, Big Guy, I think Grover may have that one."

"Oh come on!" Tyson whined.

"Maybe you three boys can hold the train of my dress as I walk down the aisle." I giggled as the three boys started to protest.

As Percy pulled the covers over us and rested his head on the pillow next to mine, reality hit me. I was going to marry Percy. I was going to say 'I Do' and we would kiss and we'd be husband and wife. I felt like I was floating. Percy is my fiancee.

I'm going to marry my best friend. The love of my life. My Percy Jackson.

"Good night, fiancee." He kissed me lightly on the forehead.

"Good night, soon-to-be-husband," I whispered softly.
