Chapter 7: Round One
"GO TEAM RWBY!" (Y/N) yelled from Velvet's lap as the girls were fighting with another team on a battle that was half frozen and half on fire. The Vytal Tournament had kicked and every team at Beacon was ready to rumble with the competitors of the other kingdoms for the entertainment of all Remnant. Overhead, Professor Port and Professor Oobleck explained the rules of the tournament while the girls continued the fight. On the icy half of the arena, Blake was fighting with a girl who used a hoverboard as a weapon that (of course) could turn into dual guns. On the fiery half of the field, Yang was matching blows with a martial arts girl. The sniper of the other attempted to open fire on the blonde while she was distracted, only to be frozen solid by Ruby. A staff wielder also tried to attack Ruby, only to be blindsided by Weiss.
"Way to go guys!"
"You're really getting into this (Y/N)," Velvet chuckled at his enthusiasm. He nodded rapidly.
"Of course! It so cool how they're all fighting like that!" After returning from the Xiao Long residence, (Y/N) had been noticeably more keen on training than he had been, riding high on his first really defeat of a Grimm. Coco ruffled his hair.
"You'll be fighting just like that one day little man,"
"I hope so!"
The battle raged on until the girl's eventually came out victorious thanks to Blake and Yang.   (Y/N) raced down to greet the them (Team Coco needed to get ready for their fight) at the entrance. He jump hugged Yang.
"You guys were awesome!" Yang nuggied him.
"Well we had to do good since you were watching!"
"Yeah, we could hear you from the arena!" Ruby added. They all walked out to the festival grounds before Ruby groaned.
"Is anyone else starving?"
"I may have worked up an appetite," Blake said coyly before her stomach roared. (The little dragon also nodded.
"I'm hungry too,"
"Gee, if only there was somewhere on campus to get food around here. Oh wait," Weiss said sarcastically. Ruby patted her shoulder.
"It's ok Weiss, I forget about the fair grounds too,"
"I was being felicitous!"
"Well if you were hungry why didn't you say so!" (Y/N) groaned into Yang's shoulder before the blonde motioned them to follow.
"Come on, I know just the place,"
Just as they started to leave, a familiar voice called out.
"Hey! Might be hard to eat without this!" It was Emerald playfully taunting them as she held out Ruby's wallet. As Ruby panicked looking through her pocket, the green haired girl chuckled.
"Good to see you Ruby,"
"Hi Emerald!" (Y/N) greeted as Ruby thanked her for getting her wallet back.
"What's up Em?" Yang also greeted friendly.
"Just left the stadium after watching your amazing fight! You guys were awesome!" Ruby blushed.
"Oh stop,"
"I heard your team progressed to the next round too," Blake stated.
"You know it feels like we never see your other teammates," Weiss pointed before Yang asked.
"So how did they do in the fight?" Emerald thought for a moment before responding.
"Really well,"
"That's great," Ruby complimented. "Why don't we all go out and get some victory food together?"
"Oh gosh, that's so nice of you but all my teammates are kinda...introverted," She looked over at Mercury being weird. "Really socially awkward," (Y/N) stuck his tongue out at the older boy.
"He's not introverted, he's just a dum dum," Emerald chuckled while Weiss gasped.
"(Y/N) Rose Xiao Long!" He pouted
"It's the truth!" Emerald waved it off.
"Nah, he's right. By the way, when did you two get a new brother?" Emerald asked looking at Ruby and Yang. Yang ruffled the boy's hair.
"Our dad offered to let him live with us, so we insisted he take the names,"
"That's great (Y/N)! Anyways Merc and I will be moving on to the doubles round. What about you guys?"
"Well as team leader, I thought long and hard about this decision," Ruby said smugly before her new brother corrected her.
"They put it to a vote!"
"Well yes but I decided we should put it to a vote!"
"We voted for Weiss and Yang," Blake finally answered.
"I will happily represent Team Ruby," Weiss curtsy before Yang slammed her fist together.
"Yeah, were gonna kick some butt!"
"Well if Mercury and I see you down the line, don't think we'll go easy on you,"
"Wouldn't have it any other way,"
"Alright well, we're gonna go catch some more fights,"
"Have fun!" Ruby yelled as (Y/N) waved.
"Bye Emerald!"
"See ya later, and congrats (Y/N),"
The place Yang took them too was a noodle stand run by an old man (Y/N) had often seen working around town. The boy was seated between Ruby and Yang.
"I'll have a bowl of the regular please," Yang asked as the old man slid her a giant bowl of noodles the size of the boy.
"I'll take the same!" Ruby asked as yet another bowl appeared.
"Do you have anything with a low salt-," Weiss was cut off as another bowl was shoved to her. (Y/N) looked at some of the peppers just peaking out from the kitchen.
"I'll have the same, but can you make it spicy?" The man shoved a bowl to him, only the noodles had a reddish hue to them along with diced peppers thrown into the mix. Lately, the boy had had a craving for spicy and hot food. Blake just nodded to the shop keep who bolted to the back and returned with a bowl piled high with fish. The cat faunus drooled over it happily. Weiss then pulled out her credit card and headed it to the owner.
"Aw Weiss, what's the occasion?" Yang asked.
"Consider it a thanks for sending me to the doubles round," the card was unceremoniously lodged into the tables as the card reader read declined.
"What? How could my card be declined!? I was barely into my monthly allowance," As the Schnee deflated over the news, Blake attempted to sneak away her fish, only for the owner to quickly snatch it away.
"No!"
"Maybe I could help?" Pyrrha asked as she and the rest of team JNPR approached. (Y/N) waved at them.
"Hi guys!"
"Pyrrha!" Ruby cheered.
"Aw you don't have to," Yang tried to dismiss.
"But she could!" Blake insisted. The red head laughed.
"Well I think you all earned it after that battle,"
"Not to mention it's (Y/N) new birthday!" Nora added happily.
"Huh?" The dragon boy asked.
"Nora, that was supposed to be a surprise," Ren informed her as they sat down.
"Oops,"
"What's she talking about?" He asked, looking at Ruby who smiled.
"Well, since you're now (Y/N) Rose Xiao Long, we all decided that today should be your new birthday!" He got starry eyed.
"Really?" Yang hugged.
"Of course! Why shouldn't we celebrate getting the cutest little brother in the world!"
"Yaaaang," He whined at being called cute. Weiss then pulled something out of her pocket.
"We were supposed to give this to you later," She gave a hard look to Nora. "But I suppose now is as good a time as any. Close your eyes and hold out your arm," (Y/N) did as he was told and felt something cool wrap around his wrist.
"Ok, open your eyes," doing so, (Y/N) saw a gold chain wrapped around his wrist, covered in little trinkets. He looked at it in confusion.
"What is it?"
"It's a charm bracelet," Jaune explained. "We all pitched in to get the chain and all of us chose a charm specially.
"Happy birthday (Y/N)!" Ruby said while hugging him. He smiled.
"Thanks guys, I love it,"
(Timeskip)
Everyone pushed their bowls away in satisfaction, save for Weiss and Jaune who both looked like they were going to be sick.
"Are you sure it's wise to have eaten right before a fight?"
"Of course!" Pyrrha answered. "It will give us energy!" Nora burped loudly will Jaune slammed his head to the table.
"Ugh, if I barf I'm blaming you,"
"Oh! Aim it at the enemy!"
"Nora! That's disgusting! But if you do feel the urge,"
"Got it,"
(Y/N) wasn't paying much attention to the conversation and was instead playing with his bracelet. It was easy to tell whose charm was whose. Ruby had given him a rose charm, Yang a dragon charm, Weiss a snowflake, Blake a cat, a sword from Jaune, an autumn leaf from Pyrrha, a mini hammer from Nora, and a lotus from Ren. There was even a extra one in the shape of Tai's tattoo. (Y/N) enjoyed the soft clanging of the charms in the wind and the warm feeling each one gave him. He only snapped out of it as he heard Port on the intercom.
"Would Team JNPR please report to the battle grounds immediately,"
"Yes!" Oobleck interjected. "Like they were scheduled to several minutes ago!"
"Well, looks like this is it," Pyrrha announced.
"Good luck guys!" (Y/N) cheered as they left.
"Go get em!" Ruby added.
(Timeskip)
The arena was pact to the brim and loud. As Team Ruby and (Y/N) took their seats, Port began to announce the fight.
"Team JNPR of Beacon versus Team BRNZ of Shade!"
The arena was then chosen. Half the field was forest while the other half was thunderous mountain terrain.
"Go Team JNPR!" (Y/N) yelled.
"3...2...1...BEGIN!"
There's a reason for the bracelet. Be patient.
