9: A SHOT AT MY DREAM
Years later...

PRISS
Loving the petrichor that woke me and with grandma doling a command for me to rise, the day obviously had an evidence of being beautiful.
It wasn't until Tenola poured a bowl of water on my sleepy body that I realised it was my day, the day I was brought forth into this one by someone I never got to meet. I do appreciate the fact that the orphanage didn't forget my birthday as they made me remember every time.
It was my day, evidently the goodlucks of the day were mine. Apparently, Grandma and Tenola were the first to wish me a happy birthday followed by mother's call, she prayed for me and wished me goodluck on my day promising to send my birthday gift. Her family also sang me a birthday song as they promised to send me gifts.
I knew it was something worth looking forward to as I could recall all the previous gifts they'd sent me. Tenola had given me a silver chain while Grandma had gifted me a Gold princess gown which I was wearing to the office.
Tenola and I got to work after having breakfast and to my utmost surprise, I was welcomed with a cake and balloons, after wishing for a great year ahead, the cake was shared as others wished me a pleasant birthday.
By lunchtime, the sun could easily be creeping out from behind the grayness to fill the heavens with radiance or rain might be slashing down in a relentless stream but it was perfect, it was making my day beautiful. It had been a must for rain to fall on my day and I always expected it, to me it was a good sign that I was having a wonderful year ahead.
Finally, the goodluck of the day actually visited me when the Managing Director ordered Tenola, my cousin from mother's side and I to his office as soon as the rain halted its visit to the earth. We'd all been relieved by the rain and I felt chuffed believing the new year ahead would be a beautiful one.
Smiling at us,someone who rarely smiled, I guessed it was a great news and my guess was confirmed when he finally cleared his throat and communicated with us by saying,"Here", he pointed a letter at Tenola and I.
We both glanced at each other before staring at the letter, wanting to open the letter, he declared,"You both have been transfered".
We both gawped at each other in surprise and excitement before swaying our eyes back to him gently as we do hope we were transfered to somewhere better.
"You've been transfered to the head office at Suffolk, New York", he announced smiling widely at us.
"It can't be true", Tenola recited, smiling so much with her lips almost cracking. Yeah!it was somewhere better, far more than better, it was the best.
My face was a picture of astonishment, I couldn't believe my ears, God has been so nice to me, it was my day and the most momentous moment in my life, excitement sparkled in my eyes when I realised I was finally going to stay with mom, I would become a part of her again though I'd spent my summer breaks with her not until admission into the university set in.
Meeting with her children and husband again was extremely nice, I would have fun and enjoy parental love, my dream was drastically becoming a reality. A smile shadowed my mouth.
"Priss", Tenola jolted me out of my reverie as my eyes swung to her without reducing my smile.
"Our flight is on Friday,"she announced, it wasn't until then that realization caught me, I hadn't been listening all along. Well, it was beautiful, family weekend would set in before resuming my job.
I fantasized on how the family weekend would be and I believed it eould be more than perfect.
"So quick?", I questioned through my excitement in between different smiles. This was my best birthday so far and the best birthday gift I'd collected in my whole twenty-eight years on earth.
The M.D didn't respond my question but rather dictated,"You've got to go now".
We obeyed but as soon as we stepped to the door frame,I quickly poked my head back into the office and muttered,"Thanks", the M.D only raised his head without uttering a word.
Tenola tickled me and I replied with a beautiful smile as we cascaded down the stairs. Dreaming about how beautiful my life would be at Islandia with mom in my life and with her family a loving family to me.
I couldn't wait to inform mother as I phoned her instantenously telling her about the good news as she promised to get prepared for us and to get anything we would need.
On getting home, we informed grandma who was as joyous as a fly, she gave me the letter from my one and only penpal with a CD, she later called mom telling her to prepare for her as she would be going with us, she wouldn't stay in Nigeria alone, she had to follow her little princesses. The day was the best day in my life as Tenola and I discussed heartily on how our life would be in Islandia.
I read the letter with happiness, he had wished me a pleasant birthday, after re-reading with complacency, I slid in the disc into the DVD and listened attentively to the beautiful music. It was the best gift so far as I enjoyed it till I travelled to my wonderland.
