Chapter Six
A/N – Hey guys and welcome to Chapter Six.
----- Charlotte's P.O.V -----
We continued to walk until the night was upon us. If I was alone I would have travelled through the night, taking time to sleep every couple of nights. Granted it wasn't healthy, but it was easier, it meant I would be back in my bed sooner.
Seen as there were many of us travelling together and the poor hobbit looked as though he would collapse if he walked much further, it was for the best we all went to sleep. Not that I had any dictation over what would happen.
Thorin hadn't said a word to me, although none of the others had really, other than Hannah, Fili and Kili. The other dwarves did their best to ignore my presence, but it was clear they stared frequently with confused expressions. Bilbo on the other hand, hadn't said a word to me yet, mainly due to us travelling at either end of the group, but at least he gave me a warm smile whenever our eyes connected.
I did not know much about dwarves. They were a secretive race, and I hadn't actually met one before. But from what I could gather the dwarves of this company knew as much about my society as I knew about theirs.
We were very different. We held different values and life for our races were almost polar opposites.
I wished to learn more about them, but I'm certain if I decided to question anyone, Thorin would be angry and probably accuse me of digging for information to help my evil plot.
When we settled down for the evening, I made sure to set up my bed roll at a distance from the others. I was still within the camp we had set up but allowed a few feet of space to be between me and the other dwarves.
It probably wasn't the smartest move. I was the furthest from the fire. Dwarves were built for the cold night breeze, humans were not. As well as this I did not have thick cloaks to block myself from the cold.
I had a simple cloak, that helped a bit, but still it felt as though ice was being held to my skin.
Even the stew Bombur cooked for everyone didn't assist too much. It kept me warm from the time in which I was eating it but now it was gone, the cold still surrounded me.
Although I had been with this company for a short while, it was obvious that people separated into groups, sat and walked with those that they felt closest with. They all spoke together, but they had the groups they found preferable.
The closest to me was Fili, Kili and Hannah. It was clear they were overly close. And although they had already said they weren't together, there was no denying that Kili and Hannah felt affection for each other.
As I stared at the group my mind drifted back to their comment earlier of the possibility of Fili and me ever courting. It was an amusing thought. There was no denying that Fili was very attractive- for a dwarf.
Although he was attractive, I did not know too much else about him. He seemed nice, and relatively funny but there would never be a chance for any form of relationship to come from that. I did not know him.
Soon I would be in Laketown. Home. He would continue to Erebor. He would probably be killed by the dragon. I had hope that these dwarves would survive but fourteen dwarves and a hobbit wasn't much of a match for a dragon. I wanted them to survive. Even though I did not know them overly well, I still did not want them to die. No one could be that heartless.
Not only would our lack of knowledge of each other personally, and that we would not be travelling together much longer he was a dwarf, I was a human.
There would never be a relationship between a human and a dwarf. And to think otherwise is simply a fantasy I would not live in.
Reality may not be as beautiful and comforting as a fantasy I could create in my head, no one could possibly live a life like that. What would be the point in pretending life was something other than what it truly is?
A hand waved in front of my face, causing my deep thoughts to fade from my mind. Letting my surroundings come back to my consciousness, I saw the blond dwarf waving a hand in front of me to gain my attention.
"Yeah?" I said shaking my thoughts from my head.
"You alright? You seemed to be in very deep thought," he chuckled.
"Sorry. I was thinking about everything, I just got lost in thought. What did you need?" I smiled softly.
He let out another chuckle.
His brother and Hannah were talking. I did not know what about, but they were clearly attempting to make themselves look busy so they wouldn't be as obvious in eavesdropping.
"Although your mind seemed to be elsewhere, you are still in the cold. You were, and still are shivering," he explained.
I looked down to see my body shaking and from the cold air around me, I wasn't surprised that I was shivering.
"So you were telling me, I am cold?" I asked raising an eyebrow.
He let out an awkward laugh.
"Yeah, I guess that was kind of stupid," he smiled, "but I was mainly trying to say you should move closer to the fire. You aren't fit for this weather."
"Thank you for your concern, but I do not think I am overly welcome here. I am okay on the outskirts," I stated, pulling my cloak tighter around my body.
Fili furrowed his eyebrows as he clearly began to think about something. He reached his hands into his pockets removing way too many knives. He patted his thick coat once again before he took it off. Even without the coat he wore multiple layers.
He stood up walking over to me. He sat down next to me on my bedroll. His leg was touching mine, our shoulders brushing against each other as he leaned back slightly.
I didn't quite know why he was sat so close but I wasn't complaining. He leant closer as he wrapped his coat around my shoulders.
It was warm, and pleasant. I smiled at the dwarf.
"Why are you being so nice to me?" I asked.
"Why shouldn't I?"
"I just don't quite understand. Your uncle seems to hate me. And I understand why Hannah has spoken to me. Travelling with so many brooding men, any female needs to speak to another, no matter their species. So why do you talk to me? I understand why you did at first; you stopped me from falling over more than once. Other than that what makes you wish to speak to me? Unless you are female. I do not exactly know how to distinguish between a male and female dwarf. You all have facial hair and braids, and with all your thick coats, I cannot see the figure or a female or male," I stated.
He let out a chuckle.
"You are a rather odd human," he smiled, "But I do not want you to freeze to death. I have learnt better than to argue with the female of any species, you are all quite stubborn. I do not need my coat for the night, so you may use it, better than waking up to a frozen human in our camp. But also do not worry about uncle. He is just cautious; he does not trust anyone for fair reason in most cases. He'll warm up to you."
I smiled at him.
"Thank you Fili."
