Chapter Four

A/N - Hey guys and welcome to Chapter Four.

----- Charlotte's P.O.V -----

We all walked for a short while before we got to the troll cave. It stunk. Simple as that. There wasn't much else I could say about this place other than as soon as the smell reached your nostrils it made you gag and wretch.

The smell was kind of blinding, it burned my throat, my nose and my eyes, even though it seemed like an impossibility, and it was so horrendous every other sense seemed to fail along with it.

Swept up in my thoughts of the horrific smell, I didn't pay much attention to my surroundings. That was probably why I didn't notice the object on the floor. My foot collided with it, throwing off my balance. Gravity took its toll and pulled me towards the ground. Before I could do anything to try not to fall, or even brace myself for the fall, I hit something.

It wasn't the floor as I had suspected it to be. Someone caught me. I didn't know who it was first of all, it was a slight shock, just lying in some stranger's arms but I didn't attempt to move quickly.

Once I realised what had happened I scrambled from the person's arms, looking at them figuring out who it was. I wasn't certain of this one's name but he was one of the younger ones of the company. He was blond, with a long blond moustache.

"Thanks," I smiled softly, brushing myself off slightly.

"You're welcome," he stated, "Gandalf said you have valuable skills for us, but you can't even stand up."

His voice didn't sound harsh but his words weren't pleasant. His voice didn't really hold any emotion.

"Don't worry, I have many skills up my sleeves. I've travelled across Middle Earth multiple times and am still in one piece, I'm sure no dwarf can do that and be relatively unharmed," I frowned down at him.

I was relatively short for a human, but still was a lot taller than he was. From him puffing out his chest and trying to stand as tall as he could, he was trying to show authority, trying to be threatening but him on his own was hardly threatening, but the numerous amount of knifes I could currently see, let alone the ones I could not, did at to a threatening demeanour, although I knew he wouldn't be using them on me.

"I highly doubt that. You are delusional, you've probably had a few too many bumps on the head," he said bluntly.

"Better sleep with one eye open tonight dwarf, I may accidentally drop my sword onto your bedroll," I hissed turning my back on the dwarf walking over to see what the others had found.

We didn't spend much longer in the cave. There was a lot there but there wasn't exactly a means to carry any of it, so some of the dwarves buried objects to retrieve later, whilst a few swords were being taken with us.

I didn't exactly make conversation with anyone else. It was clear I was not welcome here. The female dwarf did her best to seem pleasant, but the dwarf that I could only presume whom was courting her had been the same as everyone else here, slightly hostile but not outwardly rejecting my presence.

As we all went to leave once again I forgot to look at the floor. There was no danger in a cave where I was surrounded by dwarves, I didn't have to look for danger, but really I was slowly becoming a danger to myself. Once again I ignored the protruding object from the ground, and tripped over it. And for a second time I didn't hit the floor, I fell into someone. They didn't exactly catch me per se, they just prevented me falling as I collided with their body and clung to them to stop myself from falling any further.

My eyes had slammed shut in the shock of the second tripping event. As my eyes opened I saw who it was. It was the blond dwarf.

My knees were bent, and my hands were wrapped in the fur of his coat. Once I knew who I was holding onto, I got my balance back hastily, removing my hands, but we were still close, very close.

"Am I going to have to keep stopping you from falling over?" He questioned.

"I can't help it. I am taller than you, my centre of gravity isn't as stable as yours, I topple over a lot," I shrugged.

"How haven't you been killed yet? You won't be able to fight if you can't even walk without becoming a danger to yourself," he frowned.

Before I could make a response, I heard laughter and one of the other dwarves spoke.

"The human lass, is getting up close and personal with one of our own," the dwarf in the hat laughed.

Instantly the loud voice of the chipper dwarf caused everyone's attentions to fall of myself and the blond dwarf that was still stood close to me.

"Go Fili, Go Fee," the young brunette dwarf chuckled.

"Oh leave them alone, would you?" The female one scolded.

The blond dwarf, I now presumed was called Fili scowled at the brunette, "Besides, you and Hannah do much worse."

From what I had gathered they were a couple, if he was speaking to the young brunette and female dwarves, so I presume they would have done a lot worse, seen as I had just met this dwarf and we were certainly not romantically involved.

"No we don't," the pair frowned walking off with the others, leaving me with my new found saviour.

"I apologise for the company," he sighed rubbing the back of his neck with his stubby fingers.

I let a small smile creep onto my lips. He was actually being pleasant, that was nice.

"I assume they aren't usually like that," I chuckled.

"Sadly no. They are like that often, but you get used to it. Just we don't have many females of our kind so my brother and the others enjoy to tease me when they actually see me speak with a female, due to the rare occasion," he shrugged.

"Then I feel privileged."

"To be seen with me?" he questioned.

"It isn't every day, a woman like myself meets a dwarf, let alone such an attractive one like yourself," you smiled softly.

Did I just call him attractive? I did think he was. For a dwarf he was very attractive but I certainly never wanted to express that opinion to him or anyone for that matter.

"You think I'm attractive?"

I was never going to live that down.
