A good man - Part 3 - Steve Rogers x Bucky Barnes x Reader
Steve and Bucky made their way to the small airstrip from which Stark's gulfstream would be leaving, to take them to the château in the north of France. Both of them were ready. Both prepared for their roles. Yet Steve wasn't sure whether (Y/n) would still be the one that would be portraying his wife. Though he very much wanted it to be.
Since she had fled from the conference room, Steve had done nothing but talk to Natasha about (Y/n). Wanting to know everything he could about the agent. The super soldier had asked the widow if she knew whether (Y/n) would still be joining Bucky and himself on the mission. Natasha only able to tell him that (Y/n) had gone to see the director, to inform him that she had advise Steve of her previous relationship with the Rumlow. And that she would leave the decision up to Fury.
Steve had also told Bucky what to expect. That (Y/n) had known Rumlow well. That despite their relationship, (Y/n) had had no idea about his treachery. And if Fury and Natasha believed that she was trustworthy. That if (Y/n) was one of the best agents that S.H.I.E.L.D had. Then that was good enough for him. Steve relieved when Bucky had agreed that whatever had gone on between her and Brock. (Y/n) deserved not to be found guilty by association.
>>---------------------------------<<
"Do you think that she will be there? That it will still be this (Y/n) pretending to be your wife?" Bucky asked, as the car made its way down the long stretch of tarmac that ended at the airstrip.
"I don't know, Buck. I think that it would be a shame if it wasn't her. She seemed perfect for the role, and given what Natasha said, she has all the necessary skills." Steve replied, furrowing his brows as Bucky began to chuckle in the passenger seat.
"I don't think that it's just that she will be perfect for this role that you want her around. And I don't think that its just her skills in espionage that ya interested in." Bucky said. Steve doing his best to not let the pink hue that was creeping up his neck, be seen on his cheeks.
"What are you talkin about? (Y/n) has already been briefed on the mission. She already has the file. She.........."
"Don't give me all that, Steve. I have known you too many years to fall for the 'she is just right one for the job' routine. You have done nothin but talk about her. Ask Nat about her. I have never you seen you like this with a girl before. I like it. It about time." Bucky interrupted. Patting his old friend on the back. Both of them smiling as the sight of small planes and private jets came into view.
"Well, punk. Let's just hope that she's there. I can't wait ta meet the girl that's been able to finally hit ya in the heart muscle." Bucky added, before turning his eyes back to the outside world. The Winter Soldier hoping that all the reports about this (Y/n) were right. That she was as good as Nat had said she was. That she really hadn't known anything about Rumlow's nefarious activities. But more than anything, that she wouldn't break Steve's heart.
>>-------------------------------------<<
(Y/n) looked around the jet one last time, making sure that everything was stowed away. The plane had been fitted out with the best weaponry and devises that S.H.I.E.L.D and Stark had to offer. All discretely hidden behind specially prepared panels, that made it appear that the jet was nothing more than any other ordinary plane. The agent knowing that if all this went well, she would have to finally meet Iron Man's infamous alter ego and thank him.
She was still nervous about being there. Not because of the mission. She knew the role like the back of her hand. But because she had yet to meet the Winter Soldier. And knowing what had happened to him because of Brock, the whole thing worrying her more than she had ever been worried by a mission before. She had been told that she was the perfect agent for the job. Nat and Fury had assured her that Steve was fine with the information she had given him. That he didn't care about her previous life with Rumlow. That he was pushing to make sure that it was her that undertook the role. Natasha had told her that she would love Bucky, and that he would love her. That he wouldn't hold her history against her either. Yet as much as (Y/n) wanted to believe her friend. As much as she did believe Natasha. (Y/n) knew that scars could take a long time to heal. And that even if you weren't the one to give someone those scars, guilt by association was something she may have to face.
"Miss." A soft voice came, shaking the agent from her worries. (Y/n) turning to see the pilot poking his head through the door of the jet and smiling.
"There is a car coming this way. I believe that it could be Captain Rogers and Sargent Barnes, ma'am." The pilot continued. (Y/n) nodding in appreciation. The agent straightening the jacket of her suit before she followed the captain of the plane out onto the tarmac.
>>-------------------------------<<
"Wow." Bucky simply said, as Steve pulled up the car close to the plane. The Winter Soldier's eyes not failing to miss the beautiful woman stood there smiling softly.
"Please tell me that ain't your girl, Steve. Cos if it ain't, this could be a much more interesting mission than I thought." Bucky said, as he brushed down his coat and combed his fingers through his hair.
"Sorry Buck. That's (Y/n)." Steve replied happily as both old soldiers climbed out of the car. Bucky wishing that he had been the one called to the meeting that day, as (Y/n) made her way over to them.
"Captain Rogers. It is so nice to meet you again." (Y/n) began. Offering Steve her hand to shake, as Bucky grumbled about having to take the luggage from the trunk.
"Hello, (Y/n). Its nice to meet you again. And please, its Steve. Or should that be Alexander? We are married now, after all." Steve replied, as he shook the agent's hand.
"Of course, Alexander. And this must be the famous Winter Soldier. It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, Sargent." (Y/n) continued, as she offered her hand to Bucky. Bucky deciding that a mere shake of the hand was not good enough, as he brought (Y/n)'s hand up to his lips and kissed her knuckles softly.
"Believe me, the pleasure is all mine. And its Bucky. Or Buck. I even answer to darling if you are so inclined." Bucky chuckled as he looked at the exquisite agent.
"Actually, I think that I should call you Donovan from now on. And Nat didn't tell me that you were such a charmer. I am so glad that you are happy with me being on this mission with you. I must admit that I was slightly worried that you wouldn't want me here." (Y/n) told him. Bucky grinning at Steve as he moved to offer (Y/n) his arm and escort her to the plane.
"Wouldn't want you on this mission? Oh no, I think that you are perfect for the job." Bucky replied as he helped (Y/n) up into the jet and grinned even wider at his old friend.
"Now, (Y/n). Its gonna be a long flight. Why don't you tell me and your new husband all about yourself?"
>>-------------------------------------<<
"Have you been takin lessons from Stark. Or are you just him in disguise." Steve whispered, as he caught Bucky's arm. The two soldiers watching as (Y/n) went up to talk to the pilots.
"You've done nothing but talk to (Y/n) all this time. Its like we turned back the clock. I'm that scrawny little sick kid again. And you are the great Bucky Barnes that all the girls love. What is it with you? I swear that you have been spending far too much time with Tony." Steve said. Feeling completely pushed out.
"Look. You were just sat there all doe eyed. You weren't sayin a word. I never saw you more tongue tied. All I did was get her to open up. You now know more about her than when we started this trip. It will help with the mission. And now I know that she likes you too." Bucky explained as he took a seat in the chair next to Steve. The Captain slightly confused as he looked at his old friend.
"She likes me?" Steve asked as he looked over at (Y/n).
"Sure. She doesn't want to admit it cos of Rumlow. But every other word she said, she looked over at you. She barely even noticed me. So, don't mess it up, punk. Make sure you play the good husband on this mission. Cos you never know." Bucky told him. Smiling as Steve turned to look back at (Y/n). The Winter Soldier hoping that the bad feeling in the pit of his stomach was nothing. And this mission would go without a hitch.
