I hate you; I love you - Clint Barton x Reader

Tony and Bruce looked at one another as the sound of raised voices once again resounded through the halls of the tower, the two men rolling their eyes and shaking their heads as the sound of a slamming door echoed through the building.

This was nothing new, in fact it had become quite commonplace for the shouts, screams and bangs to break the silence that normally surrounded the tower, especially when most of the team was out on a mission.

"What is it with those two? I just don't understand it. When your sister first got here Clint seemed to take her under his wing, now it seems like he is going out of his way to upset her every chance he gets." Tony groaned to Bruce, as he heard Clint's angry voice shout for (Y/n) to come back and finish their argument.

Doctor (Y/n) Banner was Bruce's younger sister and was as gifted intellectually as he was. She was an expert in human mutation, an interest that was more than just intellectual curiosity, for unlike her brother whose abilities had gained by his exposure to gamma radiation, (Y/n) had been born with the ability to control technology with just her mind.

To begin with SHIELD had seen (Y/n) as a possible threat, despite Bruce being her brother. Her ability to manipulate and control, even from great distances, anything from a mobile phone to the most complicated computer systems, artificial intelligence, and robotics, had caused Fury and others a great deal of concern, her capability of being able to mentally hack into the most secure sites, there's being one of them, proving that if the younger woman ever fell into the wrong hands, that she could have been a very powerful weapon; but as her brother had vouched for her, Fury had decided that it was better to keep such a commodity as close as possible, granting the gifted doctor a place amongst the ranks of the Avengers.

"I am not here to save your ass every time you go and get yourself in trouble Clint Barton. I am not your personal bodyguard, and even if I was, you are big enough and ugly enough to look after yourself." (Y/n) shouted as she stormed into the labs where Tony and Bruce were working, the younger woman not seeming to notice the two men.

"That's funny. Because you are the last person I would ever call on if I was in trouble. I am more than capable of looking after myself, and I definitely don't need your help, I would trust my bow over you any day. I don't even know why Fury let you become one of us, it's not like you're any good." Clint growled, as he stomped into the room, slamming the door behind him.

"Why you conceited, arrogant, pig headed asshole. The next time you're getting shot at by robots, or need to hack into a computer remotely, I'm going to let you take care of yourself. And if you want to prove whether your bow or I am more useful to the team, just let me know, because I will have one of Tony's suits in here shooting your ass before you can even get one of your arrows on its drawstring." (Y/n) bellowed, as she and Clint stood toe to toe, glaring at one another.

"That's it, that's all I ever hear. Tony this, Tony that. I am sick of hearing about the old tin can. Anyone would think that you two were an item. Well, I hope you two are happy together." Clint continued, rubbing his cheek as (Y/n) brought up her hand and slapped him across the face.

"Is that right? Well I am sick of hearing about how wonderful Natasha is. How she can fight, how she can kick anyone's ass. I'm sick of you gushing over how goddamn perfect she is. Now get out of my lab before you get a repulsor ray somewhere you wouldn't like." (Y/n) yelled, as she stomped off into her own lab, and Clint stomped back out into the corridor.

"Well, that was highly informative." Tony chuckled, as he turned back to his work, cringing slightly as he heard the sound of breaking test tubes from the other lab.

"What do you mean. Its sounds to me like they just hate one another." Bruce said, pushing his glasses up his nose as he turned to look at his friend.

"I seriously need to get you out from behind that microscope of yours more often." Tony chuckled again, as he slapped his friend on the back.

"You see, those two idiots are in love, but are too dumb to tell one another. (Y/n) thinks that robin hood is in love with Natasha, and our resident archer thinks that (Y/n) is in love with me, which in itself is really quite flattering; but if we are going to stop those two arguing, then you and I are going to have to do something about it." Tony told Bruce, a wry smile gracing his lips as he thought about what they could do to get the two warring factions to see sense.

                                                            >>------------------------------<<

(Y/n) sighed as she and Bruce made their way up to the latest party that Tony had organised, for as he said, "just for the sake of it". Like Bruce, (Y/n) wasn't one to enjoy many of Tony's little get togethers, but unusually Bruce had talked her into this one saying that it could be interesting. Normally she would see her brother's strange enthusiasm as something to be viewed with suspicion, but another argument with Clint only a short time before had made (Y/n)'s normally inquisitive and cautious mind forget about anything other than the archer' angry words.

"You look beautiful." Bruce said with a smile as he turned to look at his sister, the two waiting for the door of the elevator to open.

"I don't feel it. I don't know why you insisted that I wear a dress, I never normally do if I'm forced to go to one of these things. Especially not one this length." (Y/n) complained, trying to pull the short dress down so that she felt presentable.

Ordinarily Bruce would be much happier to see his sister in her usual casual attire, but Tony had assured him that if they were to turn the head of the oblivious Barton, then something slightly more risqué was required.

As the door of the elevator opened, the siblings were greeted the sights, sounds, and smells of the party, (Y/n) and Bruce looking at one another before they hesitantly stepped into the room.

"You go find the rest of the team, and I'll go get us some drinks." Bruce told (Y/n), pushing her over in the direction of the others, as he noticed Tony signalling him from the bar.

"Wow Banner. If I had known that this was the only way I was going to see (Y/n) dressed like that, I would have come up with something like this before." Tony chuckled, smiling as he watched the seductive sway of (Y/n)'s hips in the short dress.

"Barton's eyes are going to pop out of his head when he sees (Y/n) like that." Tony continued, as he passed Bruce two glasses of champagne.

"So, what do we do now? I mean it has to take more than (Y/n) dressed up to make Barton tell her how he feels." Bruce asked, not really liking to impish look that had formed on Tony's face.

"Just leave it to me, pal." Tony replied, as they both made their way towards the others.

                                                        >>--------------------------------<<

"Wow (Y/n), you look amazing, doll." Bucky told her, as she made her way to where all the others sat, the rest of the team turning to see what Bucky was referring to.

"Bucks right sweetheart. You look wonderful." Steve agreed, rising to his feet so that he could offer her his seat. Clint nearly spitting out his drink as she settled into the sofa opposite him.

It was true that Clint thought (Y/n) was beautiful no matter what she was wearing; but this, well this was something different, and despite himself he couldn't help but stare. She was stunning and seemed to be glowing as the other boys in the team agreed with both Bucky and Steve, all of them telling (Y/n) how wonderful she looked. Yet Clint felt guilty, he had said so many mean things to her lately that he knew that a compliment coming from him at this moment, would be taken with derision, and anyway he knew that she must only be wearing such a thing for Tony.

"(Y/n) sweetheart." Tony's voice called out happily, as he and Bruce joined the rest of the gang.

"You look absolutely breathtaking." Tony continued, as he leaned down and kissed her gently on the cheek, trying not to laugh as he heard Clint growl.

"I have someone for you to meet, and I know that you two will get on like a house on fire." Tony announced, as a handsome dark haired man, dressed in a tuxedo stepped forward, his smile making (Y/n) forget herself for a moment.

"This is Doctor Harrison Caine, who you will know is also an expert in your field. I thought it would be nice if you two kids got to know one another." Tony told (Y/n), smiling as Harrison took her hand and gently kissed her knuckles.

"It is an honour to meet you Doctor Banner. I am of course familiar with your ground-breaking work in the area of mutation; but I had no idea that you were as beautiful as your mind is brilliant." Harrison cooed, as he helped (Y/n) to her feet.

"I was hoping that you would do me the honour of allowing me the next dance." Harrison continued, offering (Y/n) his arm and leading her off into the crowd.

                                                            >>---------------------------------<<

Clint was fuming. He had watched (Y/n) dance, laugh and talk with the undoubtedly handsome Doctor Caine all evening, and he couldn't understand why Tony would let (Y/n) spend the whole night in the company of another man with he drank and joked with the rest of the team; but now as Caine pulled (Y/n) into his arms for yet another dance, Clint determined to find out what was going on.

"What is it with you and (Y/n)? If she was my girl, the last thing I would be doing is letting that guy get his hands on her." Clint demanded to know, crossing his arms and glaring down at a slightly drunk Tony, the archer ignoring the shocked looks of the rest of the team.

"What are you talking about, Legolas? (Y/n) isn't my girl, and it's nice to see that someone can make her happy. Its about time that she had a good man in her life." Tony told Clint, smirking as the archer stared at him in disbelief.

"You mean you and (Y/n) aren't together? But I thought........ I thought that...." Clint began, turning his attention towards where (Y/n) was softly swaying with the handsome doctor.

"I can assure you that even though I am not averse to the notion of being lucky enough to hold the heart of our dear (Y/n), I am afraid that she only really has eyes for some bird brained idiot that would rather argue with her than tell her how he feels. Now may I suggest that you go and tell (Y/n) that you love her before Harrison turns her head." Tony told Clint, the billionaire shaking his head as the archer rushed off into the crowd, the rest of the team bombarding the smug billionaire with their own confused questions.

                                                          >>------------------------------<<

"Excuse me." Clint said from behind (Y/n). Her eyes growing wide as the archer pushed Harrison out of the way and took her into his arms.

"I think that you'll find that (Y/n) is already taken. Better luck next time Doc." Clint announced to Harrison as he pulled her over to the large doors that led to the balcony.

"What do you think you are doing, Clint Barton? And what do you mean, I'm already taken?" (Y/n) asked with a huff, as she glared at the grinning archer.

"You're not Tony's girlfriend, which means I can tell you that I love you." Clint said with a smile as he brushed his hand through (Y/n)'s hair.

"What are you talking about? Of course I'm not with Tony, and.......wait.....what? What do you mean you love me?" (Y/n) enquired as Clint pulled the confused woman into his arms.

"I mean I love you (Y/n). I always have done. I was angry and hurt when all you seemed to talk about was Stark. I thought that you loved him, and I said a lot of things that I shouldn't because I wanted to hurt you back. But I promise you, that if you give me a chance, I will make it up to you for the rest of my days." Clint explained, placing a soft kiss to (Y/n)'s forehead.

"But....... but what about Natasha? Aren't you and her......I mean......?" (Y/n) began, finding herself cut off midsentence as Clints lips crashed into hers.

"Nat's my friend; but the only girl I want is you." Clint chuckled, as (Y/n) suddenly realised how foolish they had both been.

"I love you too Clint." (Y/n) said, her hand brushing over his cheek as their lips met again.

"Oh well. Looks like our work here is done." Tony said, slapping Bruce on the back as the pair watched (Y/n) and Clint kiss.

"Now maybe we can get some peace and quiet. Although maybe one set of screams and bangs will be replaced by another." Tony laughed as he turned and made his way back into the party.

"Tony. No! Don't say things like that." Bruce groaned as he ran after his friend, not sure whether he liked the idea of either noise, but happy in the knowledge that (Y/n) would now be happy.
