Ch 12: Resolve

Third person point of view

"Have you gone mad? I'm already sick and tired of having to save you every time you do something foolish! Should I really stop doing so before you learn your lesson?" Gakushu fixes his now disheveled hair while scolding his sister on their trip to the office. Everyone was still at the gymnasium so they could be loud all they want.  "When on earth have you become so barbaric?!"

Yes, why did she do that? She must have gone insane.

It was in her best interests  to swallow her pride and go with the flow of things. After all, that was what she had been doing her entire life to survive.

Ginka took a deep breath upon collecting her thoughts. She found his anger reasonable and it was wrong of her to lash out like that, but also with the belief that while he wasn't all wrong, she wasn't either.

Was this truly what her father meant with his education? She certainly thought it was more noble than this. Turns out she knew nothing, after all.

She cannot deny that there is at least a tiny regret in her heart. Rebelling like this would mean back to square one.

So she pulled his ear to satisfy her ill feelings, "How is it that you believed that I would support something like this? There are plenty of ways to be firm without resulting to inhumane methods."

Gakushu had assumed that they were already on the same page. That maybe, because of that love she has for them, she was willing to set aside her shallow morals to serve something greater. "Kunugigaoka's system has even been on the news a few times! Are you lost in your head that much not knowing what's going on with the world?"

"I was an active idol who had no opportunity for any rest until recently. Must I really be compared to you who has the leisure to do as you please?" Like she even had the time to watch television or read newspapers.

"All the more so why you didn't have the right to act the way you did! You're too idealistic, naive! This is why things don't work out for you!"

"Ah, you rude little thing." He winces not expecting her to twist his ear like tugging it wasn't enough, "There are limits with how disrespectful one could be."

Shrugging her hand away again, he refutes. "You can't always be nice! There must be a lot to sacrifice to produce good results! How much baby talk should I do for you to understand that?!"

And before the two siblings go for each other's head, the secretary clasps his hands together to catch their attention. They didn't even notice how close they were to the room. Only a few steps away.

"Twins, we have arrived."

He opens the door for them to enter then remains outside until asked for his presence. They could feel the chill in the air. Despite how nonchalant their father appears to be, clearly he was upset with todays events.

"Asano-san. Asano-kun." Never did he addressed them by their first names, "You know that situation earlier runs contrary to my objective of education, correct?"

Gakushu could only roll his eyes as he listened. Now he's getting dragged into this.

"Yes, this is also what I hoped to discuss for the past weeks, father." Ginka thought this was a good opportunity, finally settling the weight of this concern. "You have taught us the value of strength above all other. I respected your way of doing things as truly one who meant well. But must you really implement a system where one oppresses the weak? The strong have no reason to step on others."

Gakuho scoffs mockingly and rests his head on his knuckles, "Nonsense. Do you really have that kind of right to criticize my methods when mine actually produces results and yours is just mere ideals with no action?"

"What kind of absurdity.."

"This is to prepare them for the adult world. I'm sure with your experience out there, it isn't as kind as it can be. You are one of the living proof of why this must be done." She froze as realization hits, puzzle pieces coming together. "A sense of not falling behind instilled before its too late. Humans make most progress when they have an object of discrimination and scorn." The kind of lesson he forced on her throughout the years, which served as her drive to meet his expectations in the worst case possible. But it still worked, somehow. "Therefore, it's best if E Class remains as it is."

"Their current situation where grades and treatment are the lowest of the low?"

"Right. Are you familiar with the rule of worker ants? It states that no matter how many in a group, 20% are lazy, 20% work, and the rest are 60% ordinary." This is the first she heard of this. He never made his goals clear to her. After all, he didn't bother considering doing so given that she cannot carry out his methods. "My aim is a group where 5% lazy and 95% work."

"Where people would chant in their heads how much they loathe the idea of being in Class E. That they would do whatever it takes to avoid that no matter what." Gakushu continues, leaning against the wall. "With 95% students believing such things, that ratio wouldn't be impossible."

"Regardless, this is a denial of rights. They already have difficulties as it is and you wish to give them a handicap?"

"Fairness is for the deserving. Only those who work enough to show results that are granted as such."

Ginka folds her arms glaring back at him, "Not all have the luxury to do so upon starting from different starting lines."

"That exactly what makes them the perfect guinea pigs to sacrifice. Are you still not keeping up, Asano-san?"

Her heart sank.

She wanted to deny his wicked philosophies until the very end. Even when she fully acknowledged that he was the reason why the school is the way it is before walking into this room, she still hoped to be convinced that he would say otherwise.

After all, this twisted thinking of his only wanted what's best to protect his students. But perhaps he got too consumed with darkness from the pain of already failing once that he lost his sense of morality.

"Father.." Ginka could only clench her fists with sorrowful eyes. But she can't back down. She has to prove them wrong. While there's some logic in it, none of what they said was justifiable. "Why must you place everyone in the same box? Possibilities are limitless. It wouldn't be right to just decide for yourself what they are and what they would be just on mere predictions. Everyone is capable of growth, after all. Is that not how I managed to get this far as to be accepted in this institution?"

"Acceptance is merely a stepping stone. Do you think you're all that just for achieving the bare minimum?" Ah, he never fails to undermine her efforts like that. Even when it took so much of her to reach that point. "Power is much easier to obtain than it is to hold on. You have only just grabbed it and now it got to your head. Don't act like you own the world with such little feat."

Now that was a full blow. He really wasn't giving her a chance to appreciate her own accomplishments. Be that as it may, she still wanted to prove her faith not only in what she was able to do, but the potential that should be seen of others as well.

"Alright, perhaps I did get ahead of myself." She could at least accept that, and that alone. "But the fact that I cannot doesn't mean its impossible for others. One never knows what truly awaits. Judging them as it is and limiting what they should be just further prevents a person from realizing and manifesting himself in the best possible way. It impedes them from occupying their deserved place under the sun. Wouldn't it be a shame if potential talented individuals be kept in the dark?"

"Nonsense. If they were so great, they wouldn't be down there in the first place."

Ginka could only scream in her head in frustration, speechless with their stubborn clinging to their view. "Listen--"

"I believe our lesson is now over so further discussion would be meaningless." Gakuho clasps his hands together to signify the end, "But if you're so eager to prove your point.."

He felt somehow reluctant. By executing this decision would show how weak his principles are with his daughter not being swayed by them. But not doing so and letting his pride take over would label him as a hypocrite who couldn't carry them out to the very end. It would stain his ideal education.

Ah, she really is an eyesore, he thought.

"Then show me your resolve. I'm sending you to E Class for violence against my top students."
