Chapter 13: Home Sweet Home

"Every minute you spend with someone gives them a part of your life and takes part of theirs."
— Ally Condie, Matched
"I feel like we won't see each other after this anymore." He said, breaking the silence between us.
He looked sad. I thought he'll happy that we're finally out of the belly of Tartarus. I feel a small part of me enthusiastic about Luke's statement but I shut it up quickly. Luke belongs to the cool, and popular ones. I belong with my books. He knows that. I need to keep that in mind.
"Oh stop with the drama Luke, I'm pretty sure you're happy that we're out. Now, we don't need to tire ourselves with each other." I felt myself smirk.
That's happening in my head right now, while my mom is driving us home. Just imagining things, imagining scenarios that could've happen. I imagined Luke saying overwhelming things but that did not happen when we were saying our farewells, farewells like we won't see each other anymore.
What really happened was awkward for me. I walked with him towards his car and we left each other with a simple nod of acknowledgment and an awkward goodbye.
Halfway the drive, my mom spoke out and asked me why I was still in school. I didn't bother lying. I told her that I forgot Charlotte's envelope therefore I went back to school and got snowed in. I told her that I met Uncle Sam's grandson, Luke, that we both got snowed in. I didn't tell her that we did some meddling around in school, that'll freak her out, instead I said that we stayed put in one place until I wanted to use the comfort room and we found our way out.
When we finally got home, snow's still pouring over us softly, the moon's shinning above us with its light, making the night not so dark.
Whilst I was observing my surroundings, my mon turned the engine off and checked the car if it's locked properly. I waited for her to be done and we both walked together, heading towards the house's porch and into the door.
"We're home!" My mom shouted, shedding off her coat.
"Where's dad?" I asked when I see Charlotte, my sister eating a bowl of popcorn on the couch, watching some silly reality show. It's a habit of mine asking where one of my parents are whenever I get home even though I don't need them.
"Kitchen," Charlotte replied coldly, not bothering to look in my eyes.
When I pulled my coat off, my mom quickly ran towards the kitchen. I walked towards the couch where Charlotte was lazily sitting on, with my hands in my back, hiding her envelope. "Your future got me in a lot of trouble, you know?" I said, throwing the envelope on her lap. I abruptly sat on the couch, hugging my knees. Clearly, I got her attention because she put the TV on mute.
"I thought you've forgotten!" She exclaimed, hugging the envelope.
"I was so mad at you, Gwenny. I've told you a thousand times to get this." She stood up where she sat. "When I got back, and you weren't here, but your bag was, and I searched it, and my envelope wasn't there," she blabbered, whilst getting her laptop in the counter top. Her voice gets louder when she was getting far from me. Most siblings will resent their sibling if they mess with their stuff, but not Charlotte and I. We're different. Therefore when she said that she checked my bag, I didn't get mad at her, that's normal for us. She continued, "whew! I loathed you for the past few hours. I've sworn that I'll never talk to you again if you get home empty-handed."
Holding her laptop, she sat again on her spot. "Did you swear on the River of Styx?" I asked her, shaking my head, chuckling at the idea of her not talking to me ever again is funny.
She looked at me and gave me a stink-eye. "Yeah, yeah. Laugh at my sworn oath, little sister." She gets back to her laptop and typed swiftly.
"Pass me the remote?" I requested, handing her my hand. The moment I felt the remote on my hand I switched the channels.
I pushed the up button on the remote numerous times until I found an entertaining channel. My favorite show, How To Get Away With Murder was on.
When the commercial started, it played a Christmas song. If earlier, I wasn't feeling the Christmas mode, now I was, so I sang along.
"Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus lane," I sang playfully, waving my body left to right..
I waited for the next line."Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer, pulling on the reins.." It was evident that I was enjoying the commercial break because I'm using the remote control as a mic.
"Gwen, I'm—" I interrupted my sister, singing more loudly. "Bells are ringing, children singing, all is merry and bright." I waved my hand glamorously, smiling widely at my sister.
"So hang your stockings and say your prayers,"-- I imaginary hanged a stocking and put my hands together -- "cause Santa Claus comes toni--" My sister quickly pulled the remote out of my hand and the music was cut off in the last part.
"Why'd you turn it off?" I frowned.
"I'm kinda doing something important here." She gestured her laptop, and she shooed me away.
"Fine!" I said, defeated. "I'm going in my room."
I picked up my bag first and then went upstairs. As I walk on the staircase, I looked at the sidewall where picture frames hang. I can't believe those pictures were taken when my sister and I were little, the memories seemed like yesterday.
There are pictures when my family and I went skiing when I was six, we were all waving in the camera.
There's a picture when we were at the library the whole day (It was my turn to pick where family day will happen), the twelve-year-old me was sitting, my face was smiling widely in the camera and I was showing what book I was reading— which was The Lightning Thief. My parents were standing behind us, and instead of looking at the camera, they were smiling over me and my sister. My fourteen-year-old sister was happily enjoying the book she was engrossed to— The Hunger Games —she didn't even bother to look at the camera. It was a great day, they didn't complain when I wanted to use Family Day in the library.
So much for good old days, I ran quickly in my room and cannon-balling myself on my bed. What a slow night.
I wonder if Luke went home safely, I'd like to ring him but I don't have his number and my phone is in my school bag, I'm too lazy to get it.
Looking at ceiling of my room, I recalled the past events. I sat up when I remembered I've finished reading Doon, and that I don't have a copy of the second book.
I reached for my laptop, under my bed, and turned it on.
When I was done ordering for the next books using my sister's credit card since I used all mine already, I heard my Mom call my name. "Yeah?" I replied.
"You haven't eaten your dinner, so come down here." My mother is really concerned about me and Charlotte when it comes to eating.
She doesn't want us starving or missing breakfast, lunch or dinner. She's sensitive about food because she came from a poor family and she didn't want us to experience what she experienced, so she worked her butt off until she can buy the things she needed and a few things she wanted. I'm nor rich or poor, I'm in middle-class.
After eating dinner by myself, I took my time showering, shaved my body, put on my jammies, and blown-dried my hair. I was laying on my bed peacefully with my phone on my tummy until I shrieked when it vibrated. When I checked my phone, it says that I got a message from an unknown.
Unknown: Hi Gwen :) it's me Luke!!!!
A smile crossed my face instead of a frown. I sat abruptly, leaning at the headboard of my bed and absently touching my lower lip. I added Luke's number in my contacts. I should be wondering how the heck he got my number but I'm too overwhelmed by the fact he's texting me.
Gwen: Hi, Luke!
Luke: I have Duncan with me and Jamie, they're safe here in my room.
Duncan? Jamie? Oh my sweet goodness! I forgot that I threw my book, Doon at him. I thought I've put it back in my locker safely, I didn't notice that he had it the whole time.
Gwen: You got my babies?
My eyes widened the moment I realized I sent him an un-cool message. Seriously, Gwen? My babies?
Luke: but I thought I'm your baby?
I giggled by his response. I didn't even reread what I was typing, I just tapped 'send' the moment I was done typing.
Gwen: Be serious, Luke. I may seem sweet but if you return my book with a foul condition, I will break a level of crazy that will make your nightmare seem like a happy place.
A/N: First of all, thank you, my lovely readers for getting this far, still reading my work, thank you so much. I hope that you liked this chapter and if you did, do you mind giving a vote?
