Chapter Nine
Micaiah's POV
I had no clue how long it had been since I had been taken, but I did know one thing. I had to get out of there, and I had to do it fast. I moved slowly towards the door, hearing my grandfather snoring in the other room, and I slowly opened the creaky old door. It squealed, and I froze, watching to see if he was going to wake up, but he didn't move. I breathed a sigh of relief, slipping out. I quickly found the key to the door on a broken glass coffee table, and grabbed it, heading for the front door. I couldn't help but retch when I smelled the amount of alcohol he had apparently been drinking. That did explain why he was knocked out, though, and for that, I was grateful. I opened the front door, gasping softly when I didn't recognize the area. I dropped the key on the sidewalk, taking off, and running as fast as my legs would carry me. I made it a good ways away, and had turned several times when I heard a shrill beeping. my other cochlear implant was dying.
"No!" I shrieked, gently pulling it off, and silently willing it to turn back on and work again. This couldn't be happening. I dropped to my knees, crying silently, and then felt something cold and wet nudge me. My head shot up, gasping, and I scrambled backwards, panicking. I sighed when I saw the golden retriever, though, smiling. There was also a young woman with the dog, and I smiled weakly when I saw her cochlear implants.
"You're deaf too." I signed, and she smiled, nodding. She slipped the leash onto her wrist, signing.
"Yes, I am. My name is Maeve Reed, and this is Spencer, my hearing dog. What's your name?" I signed my name quickly, gently petting Spencer. Her eyes widened, and she started signing frantically.
"Are you the girl who was kidnapped a few days ago?!" I nodded , standing up, and extended the hand with my dead implant in it.
"Yes, I am. Would you possibly have a battery I can use?" She nodded, rummaging in her small handbag, and handed me a battery. I slipped the dead one out, and replaced it, putting the implant back on.
"Thank you, Maeve." I said, happy to be able to talk again, and she smiled.
"Not a problem. Do you need to use a phone, or could I take you to the sheriff's office?" I nodded as Spencer jumped up, placing his front paws on my legs.
"Could I use your phone, please? And.....Where exactly are we?" She handed me the phone after unlocking it.
"We're about a half-hour outside of San Francisco. And there's a hotline that was sent out to call, in case anyone found you." I nodded, dialing the number that she repeated to me. I waited for a minute, and then heard a voice come across the like.
"LA police hotline." I forced myself to blink back tears. I was so close to going home.
"Yes....Um....My name is Micaiah Key, I was kidnapped by my mom's dad, and I'm about a half-hour outside of San Francisco with a Maeve Reed, who is also deaf, like me, and she has a hearing dog named Spencer. My.....My dad, Devan...is he....is he still alive? He was shot more than once." I heard yelling, a few expletives, and then the woman returned to the line.
"Micaiah, we actually have your location, and we know Ms. Reed. She's the daughter of one of the detectives on your case. Stay with her, alright? We have people on the way, and we're getting in touch with your parents now." I choked down a sob, and Spencer licked my hand, looking worried.
"Thank you." I whispered. Maeve gently petted him, smiling, and the lady on the hotline hung up. I handed the phone back to Maeve, smiling at her.
"They're on the way, and they're getting in touch with my parents. I'm going home." I signed, and she hugged me. The last few days had been awful....But things were finally getting better. I was going home.
