❥ Chapter 6: Secrets

"It's this one, right?" Grillby asked, slowing down before making a turn into the driveway.

"yep." Sans gave Grillby a thumbs up.

Grillby parked on the driveway, checking his surroundings and being careful of how close he was to the other cars nearby.

It was dark by now, and the driveway was full.

Both monsters unbuckled their seatbelts, but before Sans opened the car's door, Grillby stopped him, delicately holding on to his sleeve.

"Perhaps I should've asked earlier, but how are you feeling?" He asked, concern in his voice.

Sans smiled.

"way better, actually. though i do ask of you to please keep this a secret between the two of us. don't wanna worry anyone else, y'know."

As much as Grillby didn't like that Sans was so secretive about these things, especially with his brother, he respected his wish and understood his reasoning.

Giving Sans a small nod, Grillby unlocked the doors and exited the car, followed by the smaller monster.

As they approached the entrance, music could be heard blaring inside.

"my turn to open the door for the gentleman." Sans playfully teased, unlocking the front door and extending his skeletal hand into the inside of his home.

"Witty." Grillby sarcastically laughed, stepping into the skeleton's house and taking a small look around.

It was very cozy inside, and there was a wide array of abstract paintings hung on the wall, in addition to some framed pictures and a very peculiar artwork of a singular bone with a green background.

Sans closed the door behind him and locked it.

"those paintings you're looking at, my brother painted them, except the bone. i bought that one back in the underground. nice, ain't it?" Sans admired the painting before signaling Grillby to follow him into the living room.

"HELLO, BROTHER! I WAS GETTING WORRIED, WHERE WERE YOU?" Papyrus was first to greet, lowering the music playing from the portable speaker next to him.

He was sitting on the floor with Undyne and Alphys, sorting through a pile of movies by genre.

"sorry, bro. i lost track of time." Sans lied, to Grillby's personal disapproval.

"I SEE YOU DECIDED TO BRING SOMEONE IN THE END! HELLO, GRILLBY! MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME." Papyrus welcomed the fire monster, getting up on his feet to shake his hand.

"Good to see you, Papyrus. Thank you." Grillby returned a warm smile, going in for the handshake before turning to face Undyne and Alphys, who were getting up on their feet as well.

"Hello, my name is Grillby, it's an honor to meet such important figures to the monster kind." He introduced himself, bowing his head out of respect.

Throughout his life, he never would've imagined to get the opportunity to meet the Royal Scientist and the ex-leader of the Royal Guard, especially at a movie night.

"Eheheh... Y-you don't have to do that. Please call me Alphys." Alphys blushed, nervously going in for a handshake.

"I'm Undyne. Pleased to meet ya! I hear your bar opened about a month ago, congrats on that!" Undyne chimed in, going in for a handshake as well.

Grillby smiled, flattered.

"Thank you." He said.

"Oh! And congrats to you and Sans as well!" Undyne added, winking at Grillby and giving him a light punch.

Grillby raised an eyebrow, confused.

The bartender stood there, at a loss for words and sorting through his thoughts in a vain attempt to figure out what Undyne could have meant by what she said.

"uh. what are you talking about, undyne?" Sans, who had already taken a seat on the couch and taken his shoes off, asked for clarification.

Undyne and Alphys glanced at each other for a brief second.

While Undyne seemed befuddled, Alphys had an apprehensive look on her face.

She was shaking her head sideways, signaling Undyne to stop talking.

"undyne?" Sans inquired, further pressuring Undyne into spilling the truth.

Just as Undyne opened her mouth to speak, Papyrus interrupted.

"I'M SURE IT'S NOTHING BROTHER! UNDYNE JUST HAD A LITTLE MISCONCEPTION!" He grinned, playfully wrapping his arm around Undyne's neck.

"Wait—so they aren't dating?" Undyne blurted out, shocked at this sudden realization.

"UNDYNE!" Both Papyrus and Alphys exclaimed in unison, putting a hand over Undyne's mouth.

Grillby and Sans both felt their face grow hotter as a blue hue spread over their faces.

Sans glanced over at Grillby, instantly looking away the moment the two made eye contact.

This was quite an embarrassing and awkward situation.

"where'd you get the idea we were dating? we're just best friends." Sans clarified, looking for an answer.

Upon asking that question, the culprit of this assumption could be clearly seen amongst the three monsters holding onto each other.

"papyrus. what did you tell them?" Sans interrogated in a scolding manner.

Papyrus' face was completely orange, his eye sockets wide and his forehead covered in beads of sweat.

"THE GREAT PAPYRUS FORBIDS YOU FROM GETTING ACCESS TO THAT INFORMATION, JUST LIKE YOU ALWAYS KEEP THINGS FROM ME!" Papyrus remarked, crossing his arms and shaking his finger.

Sans exhaled slowly and sank further back into the couch, feeling called out and defeated.

"okay, fair point—fine."

Grillby took a seat on the couch, resisting the urge to laugh at the interaction between the two brothers.

Sans getting a taste of his own medicine was quite satisfying to watch.

"I'm sorry, Paps." Undyne whispered.

Papyrus put a hand on Undyne's shoulder.

"You are very much forgiven!" He whispered back, smiling comfortingly.

"Um... is it me, or do y'all smell something burning?" Alphys pointed out, taking a whiff at a smell that seemed to be emanating from the kitchen.

"THE SPAGHETTI!! BE RIGHT BACK WITH YA'LL!" Papyrus realized in a panic, running down the hallway into the kitchen.

"i'll go check on him." Sans slowly got up and stretched, following after Papyrus, leaving Grillby alone with the couple.

"So..." Undyne started, a smirk on her face as she plopped herself next to Grillby on the couch and leaned in towards him.

"Do you like him?" She murmured, a hand hovering over her mouth.

Grillby shrunk back into the couch, shying away from Undyne's question.

"Undyne! Don't be so f-forward!" Alphys exclaimed, grabbing her girlfriend by the arm and pulling her away from the bartender, who's flame looked a little pale.

"Sorry about that..." Alphys apologized softly, sitting in between the two.

"She's a little out of control today."

Undyne grumbled in response to Alphys' comment, her arms crossed over her chest.

"It's okay... To answer to Undyne's question, Sans and I are just close friends." Grillby spoke.

"Well if y'all are just 'close friends', y'all must be really close if Sans invited you over. The guy knows everyone, but never has he invited someone to his house for a hangout." Undyne replied, resting her head on Alphys, who was nodding in agreement.

Grillby fiddled his thumbs at the statement, his stomach feeling a strange sensation of butterflies.

For some reason, he felt happy to know that Sans trusted him and considered him close enough to come over.

Suddenly, a question he never thought he'd wonder, surfaced to his train of thought.

What if... Sans liked him?

The fire monster quickly shrugged off the idea, a faint blush spread over his face with embarrassment.

He felt silly, stupid even, for asking that to himself.

Of course Sans didn't feel that way—they were just... friends.

I wish I could delete this chapter lol. It's pointless haha.

Done.

Edit of August 9th, 2022:
So far this chapter has had the most changes. I basically rewrote it completely, and changed the meaning of "secrets" in the title. Essentially, what this chapter is trying to say, is that everyone hides secrets, and you can't expect to be told everything when you yourself keep secrets from others.

Edit of October, 19th, 2024:
Very minor gramatical errors were fixed. There wasn't much I saw that needed fixing. Reading the comments as I read through this made me laugh. Grillby is definitely an Adrien Agreste lmao.
