Chapter 32: Resets

Sans leaned on Grillby's shoulder.

"where to start...." He sighed.

"How about you tell me why were you being distant with me this morning" Grillby calmly suggested.

"riiight... well um... i... had a.... n-nightmare last night." Sans admitted, his face blushing a bit with embarrassment.

"What was it about" Grillby asked, his interest peeking in.

"resets"

"Re....sets...?"

Grillby was confused.

What in the world was a reset?

"yeah. resets are like... how to explain... hmm... resets, are kind of like time traveling shenanigans, but not quite." Sans tried to explain.

Grillby slowly nodded.

"Uh-huh go on" he said.

"these resets can only be manifested by determined beings. You have to have an extremely high amount of determination to do this. The amount you'd need for a monster to do it would melt most of us." Sans went on.

"So only the most determined can time travel?" Grillby hesitantly concluded.

"it's not really like time travel. resets are composed by save files. kind of like a video game where you reach your destined location and save your progress"

"Wait- So does that mean that they.... You know.... Die... and come back to their last saved file?"

Sans looked at Grillby and smiled.

"you're so smart. that's so hot"

Grillby lightly blushed and scoffed.

"You're the smart one here. That makes you even hotter."

Sans chuckled lightly.

"but you're the one made of literal fire."

Grillby rolled his eyes and laughed softly.

"Psht... I saw this coming from a mile away. Anyway, keep going"

"okay if you say so, hot stuff. like you said, they do come back to their last safe file after their death, so killing them wouldn't work since they'd come back knowing you skills, strategies and blah blah blah.... and since they are determined beings, they won't stop until they get what they want. even if it is bringing death to us, they won't hesitate to do it" Sans picked up the conversation.

Grillby frowned in an unnerved way and grabbed a hold of Sans' hand tightly, but not to a tightness that would hurt his lover.

"That's... frightful." Grillby mumbled.

Sans gave Grillby an assuring smile and held his hand.

Grillby's feeling of fear soon was forgotten at the assurance that Sans was and would always be there with him.

Being with Sans made him feel like the luckiest guy in the world.

He felt safe when he was with him, even if had had a horrible day, Sans always made the best out of it.

Just as Grillby was about to loose himself in his train of thought, he realized something.

"Wait-. How do you know about this? Wouldn't your mind be erased along with the events after their last save if they died?"

Sans' smile dropped, and he clung on to Grillby's arm instead of just holding his hand.

"that's the problem... i remember the past timelines." He revealed, letting go of a long, sad sigh.

Grillby's mind was filled with questions.

How can he remember something that never happened, but did happen at the same time!?

What are, and were the other timelines like!?

"How do you... remember?" Grillby asked warmly.

"there was an accident. it occurred when i was just a kid. it gave me a sense of awareness of time and space, and the ability to fold it to create my so called 'shorcuts'." Sans responded.

Grillby was still at a loss for words, but didn't want to pry in too much.

With every new little thing he learned, only more questions popped up.

Sans chuckled and lightly nudged Grillby's arm.

"i see that puzzled expression in your face"

"Is it really that obvious?"

"yep" Sans nodded.

There was small moment of silence.

"Sans... what... has happened in other timelines?" Grillby finally asked.

Sans looked down at his chest, and put a hand over it, clutching it as if his whole life relied on it.

"Sans"

Grillby kissed Sans' forehead and hugged him closely.

"It's ok if you don't want to tell me. You've already told me many new things in a single night" Grillby said.

Sans smiled and hugged Grillby back before letting go of him and taking in a deep breath.

"no... i want to let this off my chest for once... it's... actually quite nice to have someone to talk to. heh, ever since we met, you've always been there to listen and to help me out and stuff." Sans said.

Grillby grinned and got comfortable by lying down sprawled across the bed, his head resting over Sans' legs.

Sans stared at Grillby in awe, and blushed a little as he slowly, and curiously began to stroke his flames.

Grillby hummed.

"That feels good." he said.

"you tired?" Sans asked.

"A little... but I want to keep hearing whatever you have to say" Grillby admitted.

Sans leaned back on the bed frame and closed his eyes, recalling the other past timelines.

He flinched at the thought of them and began feeling an uneasy feeling.

"there was times when we reached the surface and lived on with our lives happily. you and I we always close friends... but...." Sans trailed off as he began quivering at the nightmares haunting him.

"t-there was m-many times in which none of u-us made i-it to the s-surface... i'm s-sorry... i could't stop them... i just stood by and watched them t-take your happiness away. i-i did n-nothing until i-it was too late... i'm s-such a sick monster, aren't i? i-i didn't care if they died or not. it would only h-happen again w-with the n-next reset! and i wasn't s-strong enough to k-kill them!" Sans began crying at a barely audible volume.

Grillby quickly sat up and held his boyfriend close, showering him with as many kisses and cuddles as possible.

"Shh....shh....shhh..." he comforted.

"Baby don't think about it, I'm here with you... nobody should have to go through with what you went through... It's just not fair...."

Grillby rubbed Sans's back in circular motions and hummed a small lullaby his parents used to sing for him as a child when he felt sad or scared.

Sans weakly chuckled and leaned to Grillby's warmth, wiping the tears streaming down his cheekbones away.

Grillby's voice was soothing.

His calm tone and boundless fiery persona were a great combo playing together to form a perfect symphony that not many achieved.

In no time, Sans fell asleep in Grillby's arms.

Grillby smiled sweetly and laid Sans on the bed, lying next to him, closely, his arms still wrapped around the small skeleton.

"Goodnight Sans. I love you so much" he whispered before drifting off to a deep slumber.

Another day....
