Chapter 22: Going to Bed
"BROTHER! THERE YOU ARE! I WAS ABOUT TO GO OUT THERE AND SEARCH FOR YOU MYSELF!" Papyrus exclaimed, his hands placed on his hips in a scolding manner.
"grillbz didn't wanna wake up, so i may have took a little long waking him up" Sans explained, only to let out a yawn afterwards.
"You should go to bed. You can't forget the fact that your magic is still low, and your painkillers' effect is going to dissipate in a while. Your shoulders and wrists are going to hurt a lot." Grillby recommended, leaning down and kissing Sans' forehead.
"thanks grill. but there's a few things i still need to do. i can handle it for a while" Sans assured, taking a deep, long breath afterwards.
With all the hesitation in the world, Grillby allowed Sans to stay awake for as long as he needed with a short, "ok".
"thanks" Sans thanked leaning in closer to Grillby's face for a kiss.
"BROTHER! CAN YOU READ ME A BED TIME STORY!?" Papyrus chimed in, interrupting the kiss and completely obliterating the moment.
Sans and Grillby separated from each other and tensed up a bit.
"sure" Sans replied with a shrug.
Papyrus let out a happy squeal and ran to the direction to his room.
"COME ON YOU LAZYBONES!" he hurried, stoping at the top of the stairs.
"coming bro" Sans responded as he then began his way up the stairs very slowly.
"OKAY! I'LL GO CHANGE NOW." Papyrus asserted before finally entering his room and locking himself up in his closet.
Stoping halfway up the stairs, Sans turned back downstairs and looked down at Grillby with a puzzled expression.
"aren't you coming, babe? i'm not leaving you all alone here. i can read you a bedtime story too~" Sans said.
"Are you sure your brother won't be... bothered by my presence?" Grillby asked.
"grillby, there's nothing to be worried about. come on, it'll be good for the three of us to spend some time together to know each other." Sans beamed.
Grillby looked down doubtful but then smiled and looked up at Sans with a bright, shy expression.
"Yeah. Let's go" he squeaked.
"You're adorable" Sans chuckled, putting his hand up for Grillby to grab a hold of it.
Almost instinctively, Grillby did took it and followed his beloved upstairs gleefully.
By the time they entered the room, Papyrus was just getting out of his closet, fully changed into his pijamas, a light orange T-shirt and red sweatpants.
"OH THERE YOU ARE, SANS. OH! YOU BROUGHT GRILLBY ALONG... THAT'S GREAT!" Papyrus said, jumping into his comfy, red race car bed.
"yeah. what book do you want me to read for you two?" Sans asked, looking through the bookshelf in search of a good book to read.
"OOH! OOH! I KNOW! PEEK-A-BOO WITH FLUFFY BUNNY!" Papyrus enthusiastically shouted out loud.
"what about you grillbz?" Sans questioned.
"Oh! Me!? I um... I'm fine with anything, really..." Grillby assured.
"come on grillby..."
"Alright..." Grillby sighed.
"Any mystery or... romance will be good by me~"
"now that's better"
"W-WAIT! ARE WE NOT READING PEEK-A-BOO WITH FLUFFY BUNNY ANYMORE!?" Papyrus blurted with an astonished look in his eyes.
"we are. i was just choosing a book to read to grillby after i read to you" Sans asserted.
"OH..."
"well then, get ready for bed paps" Sans directed, taking a small, cushioned chair from the corner of the room and placing it beside Papyrus' bed.
"I'll go grab the other" Grillby said, sitting Sans down on the chair and opening the book in front of him for him.
Papyrus wrapped the blanket around himself and got comfortable in a way he could look at Sans and feel not feel uncomfortable at all.
Once Grillby got in place besides Sans, he held Sans' hand tightly but gently at the same time in order not to hurt his wrists, and relaxed.
Sans cleared his 'throat', and began reading while looking into Grillby's 'eyes', and then to his younger brother.
He didn't need to look at the book anymore.
After reading that book almost every night for longer than a decade, he had memorized it fully by every word.
"once upon a time, there was a pink, fluffy bunny..." He began.
__________
The story soon came to its end.
Papyrus was already half asleep, he could barely even open his eye sockets.
"love you paps" he whispered, kissing Papyrus' forehead and closing the book only to place it back on the shelf.
"You two are so heart warming" Grillby murmured.
"oh grillby, that was priceless. you're on fire today." Sans snickered as the two stood up and began making their way to the door.
At the realization Sans and Grillby were leaving, Papyrus' eyes shot open.
"WAIT! BROTHER! CAN I GO WITH YOU!" Papyrus asked.
"bro... you should really get some rest. it's 12 am." Sans advised.
"THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS FINE! I DON'T NEED ANY REST! PLUS, I GOTTA TAKE CARE OF YOU TWO!" Papyrus added.
"sure" Sans hesitantly allowed.
Papyrus cheered and grabbed his indigo colored, soft blanket before following the two older monsters to the slightly bigger room next door.
The three of them sat on Sans' queen sized bed, and arranged themselves with Sans in the middle and Grillby and Papyrus to the sides.
Not much after that, Sans began reading the book at a nice, relaxing pace.
Papyrus already felt himself drifting off to sleep on his brother's side..
Chapter books weren't really his thing, he much preferred short, happy, entertaining books, or at the very least something related with puzzles.
Sans felt Papyrus growing heavier on him and smiled.
I knew exactly this would happen, he thought.
Papyrus had fallen asleep already in less than five minutes into the story.
"Want me to carry him to his bed?" Grillby asked, offering Sans his help.
"yeah, thanks grillbz" Sans thanked, squeezing out of Papyrus' grasp and allowing Grillby to pick his brother up and carry him to his room.
Once Papyrus was laid back on his bed, Sans and Grillby locked the door to their separate room and got comfortable in bed.
"The painkillers are out of my system I think. My body is starting to hurt a bit" Grillby sighed.
"yeah. i've basically been trying not to show any signs of pain throughout the night. it does really hurt, but i'll be fine. nothing that painkillers can't do" Sans groaned.
Handing some painkillers over to Sans, Grillby gave Sans a stern look.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" He demanded.
"grillby, i'm fine. plus, my brother was here. if i would've said my shoulders and wrists were starting to hurt, he would've stayed up the whole night trying to take care of me." Sans informed.
Grillby didn't respond, not even a single word.
Sans frowned.
"don't be mad at me, babe. talk to me" he pleaded, putting his hand over Grillby's.
"I'm not mad... It's just that.... It's just that you always act like you're fine when you are clearly not! It really worries me." Grillby admitted.
Sans stayed quiet for a minute before giving Grillby a reasonable response.
"look, i'm sorry, okay? it's just that i hate worrying you two. i didn't realize just how much you worry when i say i'm fine" Sans apologized, putting his head over Grillby's shoulder.
"It's fine... Maybe you can make that up to me~" he proposed, leaning in closer to Sans' face and cupping one hand over his cheekbone.
Before Sans even thought for a response, Grillby had already pulled him into a romantic kiss.
Just when Sans began kissing back and getting right at it, Grillby pulled himself out of it.
"Good night" he said.
"i-is that all? you're just gonna leave me hanging?" Sans stuttered, awkward confusion resonating within his voice.
"Good night" Grillby repeated, trying not to laugh at Sans' reaction.
"wow... guess i did deserve that one huh." Sans mumbled.
"Lay down and go to sleep you silly. I'm tired. We still need to get back to work later on in the morning" Grillby reminded.
Sans laid down and cuddled with the warm presence next to him.
"good night. love you" he sighed before closing his eyes and beginning to drift off to sleep.
"Love you too" Grillby replied once Sans was already asleep, kissing his forehead and putting an arm over him.
You make me so frustrated at you but I still can't help but to love you even more for who you are... The more I know, the more I find the reasons why you are the love of my life.
