❥ Chapter 2: The Suit

Grillby opened a door to a closet full of suits identical to his, but in different sizes.

After he and Sans had finished cleaning the bar in preparation for the next morning, they had both agreed to might as well get Sans fitted for his uniform while they had the chance.

"woah..." Sans whispered under his breath at the large amount of different garments that made up each of the outfits.

"why do you have so many if you're the only one that works here?" Sans wondered aloud, still in awe at the amount of suits shoved neatly into the closet.

Grillby took out a small suit that looked around Sans' size.

"I've been working here since I was a child, so I needed new uniforms as I grew up." He clarified, handing Sans the uniform set, who took it in a very questionable manner.

To be honest, the skeleton just wished he could work in casual attire, since it certainly was more comfortable than formal clothes.

In his opinion, it was dumb to judge the work ethic of someone based on their attire of choice, so wearing anything fancy just to go to work was pointless to him.

Grillby softy tittered to himself and directed Sans down a hall to a restroom.

He could easily tell how displeased Sans felt judging by the way his smile seemed forced.

"Try it on." Grillby instructed, unlocking the restroom door and opening it for the smaller monster.

Sans shook his head and sighed, dragging himself into the restroom and shutting the door behind him.

"fun..." he sarcastically muttered under his breath, throwing the clothes to the corner and beginning to undress himself.

A couple of minutes later, Sans slumped out of the restroom and made his way back down the hall.

Grillby was sitting on a wooden bench at the end of the hall by the closet door, scrolling through his phone.

When he looked up, his jaw dropped and his flame became slightly agitated.

Although Sans was dressed in fancy, elegant clothes, he turned out looking even worse than before.

The suit wasn't buttoned up completely, and it was obnoxiously obvious that there was no effort whatsoever into correctly putting on the suit.

He looked like the definition of sloppy.

Grillby stood there with his mouth wide open for five seconds before giving Sans an irritated look.

"Really?"

"what's the problem?" Sans innocently asked with a shrug, putting his hands inside his pants' pockets.

"You know what's the problem. Here, let me help you." Grillby grunted, walking up to Sans, and proceeding to fix up his suit.

"geez, grillbz, no need to be so hot headed." Sans taunted, putting his hands out of his pockets as Grillby straightened out the wrinkles from the suit.

After having to literally re-do everything for Sans' suit, Grillby took two steps back to take a look at the overall improvements.

A face of satisfaction soon took over the annoyance in his face.

This was the first time he had ever seen Sans look so presentable and formal.

It was surreal.

"Shame. I had to dress you like an adult would have to dress a five year old." Grillby teased, walking around Sans and gently grabbing him by the shoulders to guide him towards the body sized mirror hung on the closet door.

Sans stared at himself for a minute, turning to check out every one of his angles.

He was just as shocked as Grillby to see himself dressed like this.

"huh... thanks grillbz." Sans turned to Grillby.

"i think this even suits me better than you."

Grillby rolled his eyes and scoffed at Sans' remark.

"Ignoring that, you look good. Professional, handsome, and respectable. This is how I want to see you show up to work from now on."

Sans turned back to face the mirror, a faint blush on his face in response to the unexpected compliments.

"thanks, but no promises. don't know if i can get my suit to look as good as yours, but i'll try."

Grillby grinned with approval and gave Sans an okay sign.

"As long as you actually try and take this job seriously."

With that, Sans made his way back to the restroom and changed back to his casual clothes.

Truthfully, in those short minutes he had been wearing formal clothes, he had already started missing his black basketball shorts, classic white T-shirt, and blue hoodie.

Even though he was not in Snowdin anymore, and had access to more clothes, Sans was stuck to wearing the same pair of clothes out of pure habit.

They were his comfort clothes, and for some time the only outfit he had back in the Underground.

Eventually, he knew that he needed to get into the habit of wearing other clothes, since he did want to get out of his comfort zone and wear new outfits.

At the moment, the main change he'd made to his outfit was changing out his pair of slippers for a pair of sneakers, given that wearing slippers outside of home in the surface wasn't very convenient, or fashionable apparently.

After removing the suit, Sans neatly folded his work clothes and put it in a pile before stepping out the restroom.

There, he met up with Grillby, who had a bag in hand for Sans to put his clothes in.

"thanks, grillbz." Sans carefully placed his clothes inside the bag and took it, proceeding to then take out his phone to do a quick time check.

It was getting pretty late.

"papyrus must be worried sick by now..." Sans realized, feeling a little guilty for not updating his brother on his whereabouts.

"wow, um... sorry grillbz, but i gotta go now. papyrus has very likely been waiting for me to get home. it's past his bedtime." Sans apologized, slipping his phone back into his pocket.

"Oh! It's ok, I'll walk you to the door." Grillby assured, starting to make his way to the entrance of the bar with Sans behind.

Within seconds, the two were standing at the entrance quietly, the only sounds heard being that of Grillby's keys as he sorted through them to find the right key to unlock the door with.

"Click!" The door clicked as it was being unlocked and opened.

Just as Sans was about to say his goodbyes and leave, Grillby turned back to face him, blocking the doorway.

"hm?"

"Um... Do you need a ride home? It's pretty late and it's dark outside." Grillby offered, a worried look on his face.

Even though he was aware that monsters primarily lived in the area, he did find it worrisome to have a close friend walking alone at night due to the ongoing issues between monsters and humans.

There existed quite a large handful of humans who disapproved of monsters living on the surface, and the last thing he wanted to hear about was his closest friend becoming one more victim to a hate crime.

Sans smiled, finding Grillby's concern to be rather sweet and comforting.

"aw, grillbz. i'll be fine, really. i've got my shortcuts." he reassured.

Grillby hesitantly nodded and moved out the way, letting Sans go.

Grillby had a small frown on his face, as he did want to keep insisting, but instead tried his best to believe in the reassuring words of his friend.

"Take care Sans... Remember your call time for tomorrow, 5 A.M. Don't be late." Grillby reminded sternly, waving Sans a goodbye.

"take care, grillbz, and i won't." The skeleton confidently assured as he started making his way back home, fading into the darkness of the night.

Once out of sight, Sans wasted no time and took a shortcut home.
