Part 5
Jack watched the ambulance take the Tech away. He wasn't dead, but they had said that the voltage may cause him brain damage. The police took his statement on what had happened, but Jack wasn't really sure he knew himself. One minute everything had been fine and the next... it was chaos. An A.I. canine looked over Google with some kind of X-ray scan, before turning to an officer and stating in a gruff voice. "He's clean. Nothing wrong. Looks as if the stories add up. Just a disgruntled Tech with a faulty A.I.. I've taken photos and scans. I even took the google A.I.'s statement and serial numbers. Anything else, partner"? The officer that took Jack's statement looked over his notes and shook his head. Telling the canine casually. "No, Dodger. I think we got it all". Dodger nodded and raised his paw to shake with Google, before walking out. The officer shook Jack's hand, telling him simply. "I think we have everything we need. Give us a call if you remember anything else. We'll call you if there is any updates".
Jack walked the officer to the door, closing it quietly behind him. Sliding his hand down the door nervously, Jack asked Google in a whisper. "What happened"? Jack looked over his shoulder to see Google standing a few feet away. Google stood still, when he started to say. "I don't understand-". Jack whirled around, cutting off Google as he snapped back. "What happened to Harper, Google?! Why did you do that"? Googles eyes lowered to the floor and his voice became soft when he answered. "Harper lowered my security walls. As a result an emergency back up was activated. Harper tried to disable it and it resulted to his data corruption". Jack took a cautious step closer to Google asking more softly. "This back up... Why did it corrupt Harper? Why didn't it just lock him out"? Googles eyes rose to meet Jack's as he told him seriously. "Because Harper had information I wanted. You could say that I digitally devoured his data and left him an emotional wreck".
Jack licked his dry lips, feeling uneasy as he forced himself to ask. "Why would you do that"? Google turned away from Jack to walk back to the window. Staring out at the people walking the streets with their A.I. companions, Google sorrowfully answered. "You wouldn't understand. You don't know what it feels like. I am not broken... but if something is wrong than 'I' will fix it myself". Jack watched Google closely, relaxing as he started to fill in the pieces. Slowly walking toward Google, Jack told him tenderly. "You're right. I don't know how being outdated feels... but I know what being forgotten feels like. Being alone". Google turned his head to look at Jack with soft eyes, when he asked curiously. "Can I ask you a question, Jack"? Jack stopped a few feet away from Google and nodded. Googles eyes narrowed a bit in confusion when he asked. "You defended me from the Tech. Why"?
Jack shrugged a moment, before sincerely admitting. "Building computers is a hobby of mine. I've been taking things apart and rebuilding them since I was a kid. If something breaks, I fix it. If the computer starts to run slow, I upgrade it. Nothing is unfixable. I just need the right stuff to fix it. You may have some damaged parts, but I know I can fix them". Google turned away to look back out the window with a sigh, before he dryly added. "And if you can't"? Jack tossed his hands up into the air, stubbornly saying. "Then I will rebuild the whole system with new parts. It will probably take forever, but I can do it". Google closed the curtain and turned his full attention to Jack, saying seriously. "If I show you my memory core... Can I trust you to find the problem and fix it"? Jack nodded confidently. Google moved over to the chair by the computer and took a seat. He took a deep breath as if he was afraid. Then staring down Jack, he told him sternly. "I'll turn off the security, but you tell me everything you find and do. You try to shut me down and the security goes back up to fry your computer. Understand"?
Jack took a cautious seat at his computer and nodded. Google picked up the needle cord and carefully sank it into his arm port. His eyes staring ahead blankly as data code began to race across his eyes. Jack stared at his password screen, telling Google a bit sarcastically. "You changed my password". Jack watched the screen as the password typed itself out and opened his computer. It was hard not to touch the keyboard and type in things himself, but he allowed Google to set everything up. Then when the screen for accessing the memory core came up, everything stopped. Jack waited a moment, before using his mouse to click the link. Scrolling through it and trying to find anything that didn't seem to be running properly. Beside him, Google asked nervously. "What do you see"? Jack raised an eyebrow suspiciously. Could Google not see into his own memory? Was that why he was so scared to do this? Jack turned the monitor for Google to see if he wished, saying honestly. "Nothing yet. Everything looks normal".
Google turned his head to look like he was afraid to find something. Jack kept scrolling through and told Google comfortingly. "This could take a while. I'm going to do a diagnostic on the core first. That should bring up what's wrong". Google's hand shook as he lifted it to take the mouse. He stopped the diagnostic and went back to the core files. Jack watched him with concern as he clicked on a file for running programs. Jack stared at Google as he scrolled rapidly through the programs. What was he looking for? Jack didn't feel like interrupting to find out. When Googles hand suddenly left the mouse, Jack followed Googles gaze to the screen. All the programs were flashing red on the screen. In big bold print after every program function read; 'Google A.I. function damaged. Google A.I. function offline'. Jack stared stunned at the screen. According to this program... Google should be dead. All his programs were offline and not working. Yet, Google seemed just as surprised by this as him. To Be Continued...
