Chapter 12
We rushed out of Qpark through an emergency exit, heading towards Regent service apartment next to the plaza. When Nick and his gang, possibly loaded with lethal weapons spotted us coming out from the plaza, they followed us at an increased speed.
We rounded the corner of the service apartment and found an outdoor staircase behind the building that leads towards a construction site. We thought it was the best place for a hideout that we ran towards it.
As we ran, I felt my lungs sweltering and my heart beating wildly, gasping the breeze sending shock to my internal organs. The jolting pain in my feet and my calves throbbing from the sudden marathon tried to rebel against this chase but I ignored. If we stopped, that will be the end of me.
The construction site was secured with a 4ft metal fence. We climbed on it anyway, ignoring its 'No Entry' sign and entered the site, fearing for the gang that was chasing us behind rather than thinking about our fate that awaits us in that site.
As jumped in, we were surrounded with scaffolding frames, boom lift machinery, metal girders jutting above us and stacks of cement in a sack laid by the side making it harder to run in straight light. They fired a couple of shots towards us, but they missed by a few feet. Nevertheless, the bullets stirred us into panic that I moved away from Abs for safe distance. We tried not to run across any oil pits below us, we hopped, swerved, pivoted and ducked like embarking a maze in Temple Run. The intense training either on a treadmill or on the marathon track could never beat this actual running for life.
We enter deeper into the unfinished building and the whole place got dimmer that it faded to almost black. This gave us the opportunity to meander between columns just to stall them. When we found a small portable room that was enough to fit us both, we got in to hide and to regain our vitality before our next move.
Our enemies' footfall grew weaker and we heard slow pattering of feet, as though they stopped running for us.
"Aren't you gonna fight them like you did? That's what I called you for!" Abs hissed in panic.
"What? Three against one? Are you out of your goddamn mind?" I hissed back.
Suddenly, another ear-splitting bang echoed throughout the dimmed hall. A bullet piercing through the wall of the portable where Abs and I were inside, indicated that they have located our hideout.
We scurried off through the door and hid behind the nearest column. Another shot fired but missed again, I reckon they couldn't see us properly that they were shooting blanks. I sprinted when there was an opportunity while Abs followed behind. We continued our cat-and-mouse game leading to nowhere. In remorse, this is not how I picture my death would be.
We finally found a partially completed (but safe to walk on) ramp heading downwards which gave a promising light at the end of the dreaded tunnel. Breath catching my throat, making it difficult for me to inhale the air in. My feet were about to fall but I regained my posture.
Abs overtook me and led towards the exit before climbed out of the zinc fence that was encircling the construction site. He sprinted towards an open car park next to the site while I was behind him still hung on to the fence by half a minute when I heard another shot being fired.
This time the bullet skipped slightly above my right shoulder, I screamed. It lacerated the flesh of my shoulder, causing an indescribable stinging pain that I have never experienced before. I flopped onto the ground on the outer side of the fence and carried on, despite the feeling of wanting to give up and pass out. The blood oozing out from my shoulder and the pain in my shins and knees throbbed frantically every minute. But I disregarded it, fail and my entire depleting body will face severe consequences, run and my damage is limited to mostly my injured shoulder and burning legs.
I ran with a slower speed towards the car park and hid under a grey Saab Scania 900 CD. The chase felt long, and I wished for it to end. I heard their footsteps entering the car park before they split into positions to scout for us. I remain unmoved, holding my injured right shoulder, biting the pain. I didn't know where Abs was because he was already inside the car park saving himself when the shot fired me.
Unexpectedly Abs message ping was heard a few feet away from me. They followed the sound and caught Abs crawling from underneath a blue Vauxhall to the fence on his left. Chubby Jason Statham was already outside, moving faster to Abs' direction. I crawled out of the Saab and onto the fence, following Abs from behind.
Using my left uninjured arm, I climbed the fence to its peak and hopped to the other side where Chubby Jason Statham waited for me. I thrusted my body away from the fence aiming my left foot at him plunging on to his face. He recovered his fall instantly from the kick, but I gave another hard kick in between his legs, making him to recoil.
I quickened my pace towards Abs who was a few metres ahead of me while he reached for a yellow Audi R8 that was parked in front of the service apartment. I skipped further to hike up my speed and aim for the car. The door on the right side swung open for Abs as he approached near, while I was just a few meters away from them.
"Abs, wait!" I gasped but he didn't turn to look. He got in and was about to close the door before I reached for it and stopped. I saw a blonde girl behind the wheel on the left side. This car is a two-seater? How the hell am I supposed to fit in?
"Abs, don't leave me!" I bellowed frantically, tugging the door towards me. But Abs shoved me away, causing me to fall backwards before he got in and shut the door.
The car moved forward before accelerating to a full speed and left the scene. I watched them go, feeling the world around me shattered and defenseless. Tears broke free from my eyes as my hopefulness dissipates but strong whack landed on my nape causing me to lose focus. I slumped onto the ground and looked up to face G-Wagon guy. I was oblivious to another blow on the head behind me.
The hit had sent me into the world of unconsciousnessagainst my will.
