Prologue
She sat at her computer, alone in the dark. Her fingers tapped fluidly over the keyboard, searching for the answers she needed. A smile twitched at her lips, but no amusement showed in her eyes. She had found it - she found them. She found her.
She looked to the phone sitting beside her computer, knowing that if she left here, if she took that step to follow this lead, the phone would have to stay. There would be no quick messages to check in with people, no phone calls to ask someone for help - but that was fine, because this was something she was going to do alone.
There was no choice in the matter. No one else could get involved. She couldn't protect everyone, so she was doing this alone. Not her dad, not Peter, no one from S.H.I.E.L.D. - just her, and anyone she had to be near to get what she needed to do done.
A voice called upstairs for her, and she turned to bedroom door, a hard expression set in her features. It was her dad telling her that Peter was here. He had come to check on her.
But she didn't want to talk to Peter.
A lot had changed since London, and there was a lot that she needed to do - a lot that she needed to make right. She didn't want to hurt Peter, she didn't want to leave without saying goodbye or without telling him where she was going, but she knew he'd try to stop her. She couldn't let him stop her.
So, she left through the window, leaving her phone on the desk and taking the backpack she had already prepared for the journey.
She had to do this.
She had to make it right.
