Chapter Twenty-Two - One Less Secret

Clara stared wide-eyed at Zemo, the ringing still in her ears from the gunshot. Just as she was starting to feel the slightest amount of trust over her safety around him, he killed a man they were trying to get answers out of, showing zero hesitation as he did.

There wasn't much time to stand in shock, a soft whizzing only just reaching Clara's ears through the sides of the container. 'Get down!' She started, but her words were interrupted by a rocket crashing through the metal walls. Without thinking, acting entirely off of instinct, she raised her hands, bracing herself as a wall of purple rippled across the laboratory.

She felt the heat of the fire clashing against it, smaller eruptions bouncing across the surface as different chemicals stored in the room also went up in flames. Her feet slipped slightly as the explosion searched for room to spread, pushing against the shield, and Clara had to exert more energy just to keep the barrier in place.

Clara narrowed her gaze at the flames, seeing Zemo staring at her from across the room and she forced herself to remain focused until the worst of it died down.

Sam and Sharon had dropped their hold on the Baron at some point, likely when Clara had called for the group to get down, and he now stood free to move - free to get away. He did just that, running to a second exit as the others were distracted by the fire, and the hue of deep lilac holding it back.

Clara pushed the energy forward, the remaining flames whipping from the room with the wave of purple whisking it away. She stumbled, feeling a faintness for just a moment.

Someone called out her name, and an arm wrapped around her, catching her before she fell into the dying flames. 'I'm good,' she reassured Bucky, sounding breathless. 'We should get out of here.'

'Anybody see where Zemo went?' Sam asked, only know noticing the lack of his presence.

Clara pointed towards the second exit, finding her feet as Bucky let her take on her own weight again. 'That way-' Again, she was interrupted, a second explosion elsewhere causing the container to shift, a loud rumble sounding as one next to where they stood fell from the stack.

'Let's go,' Bucky said, not trusting the stability of the remaining containers.

They moved out, using the displaced container to get back to ground level. Dropping behind fallen rubble, they took cover, returning fire on the bounty hunters. 'Wait for my signal!' Bucky called out, looking for an opening in the chaos.

'And you like living here?' Sam asked Sharon.

'It's not terrible,' she told him, grimacing slightly.

Clara leant back against one of the containers, sitting on the ground as she caught her breath. 'Are you gonna help?' Bucky asked her expectantly.

'I did,' she said, raising her voice to be heard. She still felt a little winded after what had just happened. 'Besides, yesterday you said you didn't need my help,' Clara reminded him.

'That didn't stop you in there,' he scowled at her before switching that same scowl to Sam. 'I thought we were gonna go left?'

'You went the wrong way,' Sam yelled over the gunfire.

'I was clearing the way!' He told him, Clara looking between the two as they broke into a heated argument.

'I came out first, you were supposed to follow me!'

'And where are we now?'

'Guys, not the time!' Sharon pointed out. 'I'm out!'

They continued arguing, Clara only moving from her position to help Sharon, who was doing all the work of holding the bounty hunters back. Before she could do anything, yet another explosion rippled across the dockyard. 'Holy-' Bucky started, ducking down.

Through the smoky haze rising from the flames, they could see Zemo, now masked and firing methodically towards the enemy. 'Oh, not a redemption already,' Clara mumbled begrudgingly, already seeing that Sam and Bucky would take him back on board with his actions.

'Go,' Bucky tapped Sharon on the shoulder.

'Come on,' Sam said to Clara, letting her out before he followed.

They rushed along the rows of containers, sprinting as bullets ricocheted off the metal walls. Finding a partially open container, Sam pulled the door open. 'Here!' He called for every to get inside.

Seeing an angry, determined-looking woman coming up behind them, Bucky tore a piece of piping from the box with ease, launching it like a javelin into her shoulder. 'Come on!' Sam urged Bucky, grabbing him by his lapels to pull him inside.

Clara shut pulled the door closed behind them, not closing it all the way to avoid them getting stuck inside.

When she turned back to the group, she saw Sharon raising an eyebrow towards Bucky and Sam, the two of them standing with Sam still holding Bucky's lapels. Sam cleared his throat, letting go of the other man, and turning to scan the interior of the container.

'So, that could have gone better,' Clara commented.

'Yeah,' Bucky grumbled.

'We have a next step though,' Sam reminded them. 'Donya Madani? We find that displacement camp she was in, it might lead us to Karli.'

Clara nodded, having been thinking the same. 'You think Torres can help with that?'

'I'll give him a call when...' Sam trailed off, hearing the purr of an engine approach now the gunfire had died down.

Cautiously, they stepped from the container, seeing Zemo pull up in front of them in a fancy-looking car, the top down. 'Supercharged,' he told them.

'You're going back to jail,' Sam said, Clara thankful he had come to that conclusion.

'Do you want to find Karli, or not?'

'He's right,' Bucky offered. 'We need him.'

'Err, no, we don't,' Clara glared.

'There's two of us, and at least twenty of them.'

'Are you kidding me, Bucky?' Clara snapped. 'Do you-'

'Fine,' Sam interrupted, Clara gaping at him. 'But if you try any of that shit again...'

'Sam!'

'I wouldn't dream of it,' Zemo smirked.

'No, no,' Clara shook her head, refusing to get into the car as Bucky and Sam did just that.

'Don't worry,' Zemo told her. 'I will not try to harm you, Clara. You are too valuable to us.'

'Oh,' Clara said, her voice a few pitches higher than normal. 'That's comforting to hear.'

'Well, that was one hell of a reunion.' Sharon closed the door behind Clara as she reluctantly climbed into the back behind Zemo, Sam sitting on the back of the seat behind Bucky.

'Come back to the States with us,' Sam suggested.

'I can't. Just get me that pardon you promised me,' she said, almost dejectedly.

Sam called after her as she walked away. 'Thanks for everything!'

She waved over her shoulder, not glancing back towards them. Clara looked up at Sam, watching as he slid down into his seat. Today hadn't been a good day, and it was hardly that far into the morning.

She wanted to yell at him for making the choice he was making, but she knew that was selfish. Clara was the only one in potential danger from Zemo's presence, and as much as she hated to admit it, they did have better odds at finding Karli with his help.

Clara's mind jumped back to the conversation she had with Simmons, too, adding that to her list of concerns. What the hell was Aether? And why did it worry the people at S.H.I.E.L.D. so much that she'd need to be kept on their radar?

'You're not gonna move your seat up, are you?' Sam asked Bucky, pulling Clara back to the now.

Bucky shook his head slightly. 'No.'
