Chapter 29 - Caught in the Middle
The week following the news that Brad and Clarissa must move to North Carolina, things are stirring within Jordan. He finds himself reflecting on the past, and included in the mix are memories of Brittney. He finds himself pulling up her name on Facebook messenger but can't bring himself to type anything.
After a late morning with the humidity high with the heat index set to skyrocket, Jordan and Alex get called to a scene of an elderly woman who fell and hit her head on the sidewalk. Upon arrival, Jordan gets to the lady first while Alex gets the gurney.
"Ma'am, ma'am, can you hear me? Do you have any ringing in the ears? Are you still feeling faint or lightheaded?" Jordan begins trying to get an idea of how bad she's dehydrated with a possible head injury since she suffered a small gash to the temple.
"Ringing, yeah, I hear it. I feel okay other than that. I just need some water, and I'll be fine."
"Sorry ma'am, we can't do that since you hit your head. You need to get checked out by a physician." Jordan informs when he helps her over to the stretcher.
Unwilling to fight with the massive headache, the little old lady lays back, waiting to be transported to the Emergency Room. When Jordan looks back, he sees Brittney in the bystanders. Unable to talk to her, Jordan loads up the patient and stays in the back with her.
On the way to the hospital, Jordan replays the sight of Brittney. He wasn't sure, but he thought she was sporting a ring on her left hand. A quick rush of mixed emotions coarse through his body, but it's gone before they back into the unloading zone. With the patient handed over to the triage team and information passed along to the nurse, Jordan heads out to wipe down the back of his ambulance along with changing the gurney sheets.
"Hey, I'll be back; I need a moment to collect some thoughts," Jordan tells Alex.
While he's attempting to collect his thoughts, a message is delivered to his phone.
"We need to talk, get a break message me back, or call." He reads the message from Brittney out loud.
"Yeah, I get off around three o'clock. Meet me at Fisher's, and we'll catch up. Everything okay?"
Brittney doesn't acknowledge anything other than "see you there," which leaves Jordan puzzled.
Returning to the ambulance, Jordan and Alex get soon radioed back to the station. Confused about being called back, the two of them return ASAP. By the time they park near the bays, Jordan and Alex walk inside, where Jordan is waved into his supervisor's office and shuts the door.
"Take a seat. We need to have a chat." His supervisor begins with a cold stare in his eyes.
Jordan nearly gulps loud enough to be heard. He settles in the chair, but there's a long silence that flows. Jordan begins to tap his foot on the floor.
"You've been a great medic since you were assigned here. I had some thoughts and doubts since you were always a bit of a teaser, and the stories I heard from others passing by about your playboy ways. You've busted your ass and quickly became one of the fastest senior medics. That being said, I have on my desk in front of me your test results. I know the results, but I wanted you here to read for yourself."
Jordan reaches out, takes the sealed envelope from his boss's hand, and slightly trembles, but he rips open the test results. Slowly unfolding the letter, Jordan begins to read it out loud.
"Dear Senior Paramedic Mitchell, we are pleased to inform you that you have successfully passed the test for station supervisor. We, unfortunately, must inform you that there are no current openings within your designated area of interest. Your test results will remain active for the next twelve months. If you wish to expand your area of interest, please contact Central Command, where we will then submit your name to any station with an open opportunity. Congratulations on your test results, and we look forward to assisting in your career."
"You've killed it since day one. Jordan, take the results and widen your search for a position. You're honestly meant for more than a life of service. I get it with the former military man in the mindset to save lives after taking some in a shit storm. We all have blood on our hand's son; just do what you feel you must, but you're more deserving than a life of service."
Jordan shakes his supervisors' hand and exits the office while stuffing the letter back into the envelope. Alex is out wrapping up the run sheet, waiting to get back out to their sector.
"Ready to hit it again?" Alex asks, ready to get out back out on patrol.
"Let's do it! Only a few more hours to go." Jordan calls out as he makes his way over to his seat.
While out cruising the streets, Alex's stomach churns as they pass by their typical fast-food restaurants.
"Dude, time to grab some grub, my treat since you covered most of last week."
"None for me. I have plans once we clock out."
The comment peculiarly strikes Alex. He slowly goes to peel back layers knowing Jordan will lock up if he goes too much in-depth.
"You okay? I know ole boy can be a hard ass, but don't let him get you down. Unless there's something else on your mind, you need to expel."
Jordan takes in a deep breath struggling to decide if he should trust Alex with what's planned already. It takes a few minutes before Jordan blurts out what's on his mind.
"I saw Brittney at the last scene, and she was sporting an engagement ring. She sent me a message to want to meet up. It's nothing horrible, but as for why I got pulled into the office about; I passed the supervisor test. If I want it sooner rather than later, I'll need to move pretty much. I love being in Atlanta, but it looks like I'm next to be heading out." He explains in a bittersweet way.
To say that Alex's mind is blown away is an understatement. He does his best not to express the confusion and urge to slap not just his coworker but one of his best friends. In the back of his mind, Alex's predicting a toxic turn in not only Jordan's life, but Brittney might be out to ruin what he's built with Kristin.
"I've got to be honest; you could be walking into a hornet's nest. If Kristin finds out, this could be a nuke about to go off."
"All it is, all it will be is a late lunch. I'm not going to crush Kristin. Brittney is my past, and Kristin is the future as far as I can see." Jordan explains in a confident tone.
Even though he tells that to Alex, in his heart, it skips a beat. All that flows through Jordan's body is a nervousness that he's not experienced. He keeps thinking about what he's going to do or say when he meets with Brittney.
The time to clock out finally happens, and Jordan doesn't appear to be in a hurry to meet up with his ex. By the time he pulls into a parking spot, he's met by Brittney, who comes up walking to tap on his window.
"Hey! Ready to go inside to chat?" Brittney says from the other side of the glass.
"Yeah, let's just keep this quick. I need to get home and make some decisions."
Inside to escape the southern heat, they're seated back in the back at Brittney's request. She's unaware that Jordan's eyes have been locked on the ring. Once they're comfortable in the booth, Brittney doesn't waste time.
"It was good to see you out there earlier. Still doing what you do best, speaking of which is how we met. I can still remember it like it just happened. Gosh, listen to me. I'm beginning to ramble. Anyway, how have you been? How're things with your girlfriend going? Yes, I know about her, and maybe I've seen you together when you're with her in Johns Creek. She seems sweet and very pretty."
"Her name is Kristin, and we're great, actually. We have so much in common. She's a big country girl from Arizona. We're happy, which brings me to my next point, why did you ask me to meet up when you could have just left after you saw me?" Jordan works up the nerve to say, trying not to appear anxious.
Brittney sits there and only talks again when their server comes to ask what they want to drink.
"Good afternoon, what may I get for you? Glass of house red wine, maybe? We have a happy hour for any draft beer until five o'clock today. What tickles your fancy?"
"I'll take a glass of the house red wine, please." Brittney orders keeping her eyes locked on Jordan's.
"Draft Budweiser for me, thanks."
It's not until the server vanishes and reappears with their drinks that Brittney orders for them both.
"Uh, we just need the appetizer sampler. Don't need anything too heavy, thank you."
"I'll get that right in. Enjoy your drinks." The server says, then turns away, rolling his eyes, knowing it will be a lousy tip.
The tension between the former lovers rises to new heights. Jordan wants to ask about the ring. Brittney is wanting to admit that at times she's felt a hint of jealousy, not wanting Jordan to be with anyone else and continue to pine after her.
"I have to know, what's this guy have that I didn't? I see the ring, and well, I have to know what he did right that I didn't." Jordan blurts out and slaps a hand over his mouth.
Brittney takes in a breath and brings her ring onto the table to admire the twenty-four gold full karat diamond ring. Jordan takes it as a slap in the face.
"This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy our time together, but you were supposed to be the playboy that used me and threw me away. I never meant for us to last as long as we did. Honestly, you were the rebound I was too afraid to throw away. You placed me up on a pedestal that I enjoyed too much. Don't get me wrong. I did have some feelings for you. I never loved you the way that you love me."
"You mean, loved, not love, past tense. I have Kristin now, and I am in love with her."
Brittney then says something that relates to both of them.
"I loved you in a way that I wasn't 'in love' with you. Just like this girl, you may be in love with her, but you still love me in a way. I was your first serious girlfriend, and I get that. You fell in love with me, and it'll forever be in your heart. I can see it in your eyes; they still glimmer the way they used to. All I have to say is this, Ben is a wonderful guy; he's the guy I've always dreamed of finding. World traveled and successful like no one else I've ever met. He's pushed me to where I want, and we're getting married at the end of the summer. I'm moving soon to Texas. I just wanted to find you and tell you in person. I found my soulmate, and he's the one I can envision a future with but thank you for what you gave me."
"You're welcome, and let me say this before I lose the nerve. You came into my life and flipped it upside down in no time. I wasn't searching for anything serious, but you woke up the good man inside of me. Kristin is deserving of who I have become. She's honestly the best woman in the world. I remember how much you were drinking when I looked back at our times together. All the signs were there, and I ignored them like an idiot. In time I have faith that we will settle down to make a life of our own. I just found out that I passed the supervisor's exam, and I may talk to some stations back home to find a spot. I hate the drive from where I am to only spend weekends with her."
Brittney smiles at him as they return to silence to wait on their food. It's delivered to the table where both pick through what they want. The awkwardness doesn't end as the silence screams between them. Brittney wanted to pull the bitch switch but failed to do so, and Jordan wanted to be kind but ends up regretting seeing his ex.
Finished with their mid-afternoon snack, Brittney uses her debit card to pay for their food and drink, but Jordan cuts her off, dropping a fifty-dollar bill, and walks away. Unwilling to let him walk away without a proper goodbye, Brittney nearly chases after him. She stops him at the edge of the tailgate, where she turns him around to plant a farewell kiss. Jordan doesn't fight at first, but after a few seconds, Kristin's image pops into his mind, and he pulls away.
"I can't do this, not to Kristin, she's too good, and you're engaged! Goodbye, Brit-Brat I hope you enjoy your life in Texas, and I wish your upcoming marriage well. You're no longer tearing me apart; I'm no longer split between two women." Jordan says, then climbs into his truck to head for the apartment.
She's left standing there without getting in the final word. All that's left for Brittney to think that Jordan was right. He's moved on completely, but Jordan was able to pull off a convincing lie.
Although he does love Kristin, he's still partially in love with Brittney. He's partially crushed hearing that she's flipped everything about what she said she didn't want.
The pain throbs through him until he reaches the apartment. Over in the guest parking spot, he sees Kristin's SUV, but she's not inside. His heart drops as he runs inside to find her sitting there with Alex. They're laughing, and he walks inside like nothing's wrong.
"Hey! There you are, Alex was telling me the good news, congrats baby, on acing that test! I knew you would, so where are they going to place you? Closer to me, I hope." Kristin begins then greets Jordan with a quick kiss.
"Yeah, I'm not sure where they'll send me right now. It's going to be somewhere else. I do know that. There are no open slots here in Atlanta. That means I'll be hitting up to some places back home to try to find something. It dawned on me today. I want us to be closer together. I'll find a place in Johns Creek; I want us to get serious, like truly serious, and see how this plays out." Jordan reveals with a look that leaves Alex shocked.
Kristin can't help but throw her arms around Jordan's neck. The news comes as a surprise, but she doesn't see Alex's mouth 'what happened' since he covered Jordan's ass thanks to Brittney showing up out of the blue.
"That means if you want, you can move in with me! That doesn't mean you have to, but I have some news too! I went ahead and booked us a flight out to Arizona. Maybe I rushed it, but in two weeks we're spending at least a week with my family. They are like so super excited to meet you!" Kristin squeals, refusing to let go of Jordan's neck.
"That's great, sweetie pie. I can't wait; I'll put in for some paid days off tomorrow. Arizona, here we come!"
Kristin's hug comes to an end, and Alex takes it upon himself to use an app to order some pizzas. Once Kristin leaves, Jordan explains what happened but leaves out the detail of the goodbye kiss.
They spend the rest of their evening watching TV and talking about Jordan's plan to either find a place on his own or risk moving in with Kristin.
