Chapter 26 - Worlds Collide

In the hours after the blow-up, Jordan finds himself alone at home to collect his thoughts. He's still unhappy about Josh lying to everyone but realizes nothing he can do about it. To help ease the anger, he turns to text with Kristin, but she turns things up a notch to divert his attention.

Let me know what you think of this... she texts, then follows it up with a photo of a silky red nightgown.

"Fuck me," Jordan calls out, biting at his knuckle, wishing to get his hands on her.

Unbeknownst to him at the time, she took that photo and saved it; she's managed to use an app to locate him and plans to surprise him for a day date. Kristin arrives to find his truck and calls to get Jordan to come outside.

"Hey, I uh, I hope you don't mind, but I used an app to track you down. I'm, um, I'm here by your truck; so, surprise, honeybun. I brought you a late lunch." Kristin admits with a bag of food from Bob Evans in her hand.

"You did what? Wow, glad I'm not a low-life piece of shit. Otherwise, I could end up in trouble." Jordan kids around and ends the call to head down to meet her.

He takes her free hand then returns to the apartment. He's kind of embarrassed showing Kristin around his simple apartment; compared to her house, it feels like the pits.

"Sorry, this place isn't huge or extravagant, but it's home for now. Anyway, let's dive into that food because it smells good."

"It's a lot better than the dorm I lived in at Georgia State. It's simple and easy for two men to keep up with given your jobs. Speaking of which, when is your test?"

"This coming Wednesday, I'm nervous that I'll fail."

Kristin sits him down in a chair at the table, where she lifts his face to connect with a kiss. She intends to use it as a means to help him relax.

"Did that help?"

"Yeah, I don't feel as stressed, thank you.

"You're going to do fine; I can feel it," Kristin whispers.

Jordan smirks and goes for the food, and he smells chicken noodle soup with sourdough rolls with a half-gallon of sweet southern iced tea. It's a simple meal that Jordan enjoys. Kristin sits there unsure of her choice, but she knows it was the right thing to do when Jordan reaches out for her hand.

"Also, I'm sorry about what you told me happened with your brother. I know it couldn't have been easy to blow up like that on him. Much less get into a fistfight."

"He held his own, but in those moments where we were dodging and blocking each other. Something happened that I've never felt before." He pauses, reflecting on that brief exchange. "It felt like we had done it so many times before, but we haven't. I don't know. It could be where we also share similar military training."

"You're also brothers, and even brothers kept apart from what I've heard share traits on like ways you all think and even reacted. It could be a combination of anything and everything if you ask me. I'm glad you're okay, and I wish I had been there for his wife and helped with the baby."

Out of nowhere, there's a knock on the door. Jordan and Kristin exchange a look of concern initially, but when Nikki's voice carries through the door, he relaxes. Standing there, he sees Nikki with Josh holding Kimmie.

"Hey, is everything okay?" He asks, allowing them to walk through the door.

"We're good, and we thought that Uncle Jordan would like some time with his niece while we go reconnect for a bit," Josh explains, bouncing the baby making her laugh.

Kristin doesn't waste time introducing herself then snatches Kimmie from Josh's arms.

"Hello, I'm Kristin. I'm the 'new girl' as I've heard you refer to me. I'll take her, and you two can go out. Impeccable timing, I have her, so scoot, go away now, bye mommy, bye daddy." She teases with tickles on Kimmie's belly.

"How did you..." Jordan begins and gets cut off.

"Alex, I called him, and he shot me the address via text," Josh explains.

Nikki and Kristin go off to talk about things about Kimmie. Nikki drops the baby bag and the car seat on the living room table while Josh and Jordan stand there and stare with nothing said between them. Once Nikki is finished and kisses her daughter, she goes back to Josh and drags him out of there, where Kristin taunts the baby.

"Well, who's getting a brother, or sister, tonight. I think you are, oh yes you are, such a happy baby you are pretty, Kimmie." Kristin says, bouncing the baby on her knees.

"You're good with her," Jordan mentions, then takes a seat to watch them have fun.

Time goes by, and they take turns with Kimmie. After she makes a mess in her diaper, Jordan offers to help, but Kristin handles it.

"I had to help out with my baby sister. I was fourteen when she was born." She reveals while cleaning up the table.

Jordan takes Kimmie when she becomes fussy and sings to her until she falls asleep and places her in the car seat. Kristin is amazed at how well he's been with Kimmie. Together on the couch, they sit back and relax while the baby naps. Jordan flips on a movie. That way, Kristin has a reason to curl up next to him.

There's a silent issue creeping through Jordan's mind. He finds himself thinking about Brittney. His smile turns to a disconnected glare until the movie ends and snaps back into the moment.

"God, I love just staying on the couch with a good movie," Kirstin says, still clinging to Jordan.

"Yeah, I can be more of a homebody if this is what we get. A great lunch, I get to spend time with my niece, and I have you here with me on a second date sooner than expected."

With her hand resting against his cheek, Kristin plants a solid kiss onto her boyfriend, leaving him feeling for her more as he returns his thoughts and blossoming feelings to Kristin.

While they're in the middle of the kiss, Kimmie comes to fussing and crying. Kristin reaches out for her while Jordan goes for a bottle. He hands it to Kristin, which is when Kimmie settles down.

It takes a few more hours for Josh and Nikki to return, and much like earlier, the girls discuss their day while Josh and Jordan barely say three words to the other. Kimmie reaches for Nikki and scoops her up.

"Was she any trouble? If she was, I am sorry if watching her stopped any plans."

"She was an angel; she did get a little cranky when she woke up. I gave her a bottle, and she's burped and changed and ready to go home. Talk about dumb luck of being here. Anyway, if I'm ever here and you want a night out, I'll gladly watch her." Kristin offers while playing with Kimmie's hand.

"Thank you. Josh and I needed time alone. It's not easy being a military wife. I feel like a single parent most days. If I can ever repay you, please let me know how." Nikki whispers, locking eyes with Kristin.

Jordan's pulled aside when Josh notices a look in his eyes. It's one he recognizes from a vision back when he nearly died when he was seventeen. With the door closed, Josh doesn't beat around the bush on what he noticed.

"I know that glimmer, and I'm telling you now, you choose that girl in there. I figured it's about Britt, but she's got nothing on Kristin. Hands down, that girl drove over an hour to bring you food. She also stayed here with you to babysit your niece, no questions asked and for no money. She's smiling and having a good time with Nikki too. Whatever reasoning is going on in that head of yours, use the right side and pick Kristin to be the one to chase after."

"How do..."

"I just know, I had my own experience with that exact look. This is all new for you, and it's going to get tougher before it gets better. Kristin is an angel in disguise, compared to that other one. She's only going to continue to rip your heart in two."

All Josh does is pat Jordan's shoulder before he walks inside to help Nikki and Kimmie ready to go. Jordan stands there until they leave, which is when Kristin comes to his side and waves goodbye. Alex arrives shortly after and brings a date to his room, where moans and screams come shortly after.

"I do believe that's our cue to make ourselves scarce," Jordan says, wanting to escape the apartment.

"Let's go for a walk."

Outside, the humidity begins to dip. The couple walks over to the park and chats until the streetlamps light the way back. They notice that Alex is gone again, and they make their way to Jordan's bedroom, where they relax on the bed.

"I had fun today," Kristin says.

"It was definitely a different kind of day. I'm sorry you were dragged into babysitting."

"Don't be sorry at all! Not to sound like I want to rush...but... it gave me an insight into more of who you are as a person. You're definitely worth the time it's going to take to make this work. Today gave me more insight into who you are, and I liked what I saw with you and your niece."

Kristin plants a kiss and throws herself over Jordan's body. Hands interlocked, she kisses him until her body slightly grinds against his. Jordan feels her body's reaction.

"Not yet, I want to, but not tonight. I'm not ready to rush to sex. The last thing I want to do is disrespect you this early on because we had a good day." Jordan tells her with a slightly tighter grip.

"That's got to be one of the nicest things any guy has ever said to me. I knew you were different and sweet. Okay, not tonight, but can I stay with you?"

"Yeah, you can. If you want, you can even borrow some of my clothes. If you don't mind, I turn on the radio and keep it low to help me sleep." Jordan explains with a look of concern.

Kristin uses a kiss to ease his worries as action speaks louder than words. She takes Jordan's hand, pulling him to his feet where she's guided to the dresser and given a pair of basketball shorts and a muscle shirt.

Unwilling to use the bedroom bathroom to change, Kristin strips down to only her bikini style panties to get comfy in Jordan's clothes. He can't help but watch the little striptease. What Kristin's doing doesn't go unnoticed as Jordan's body reacts—seeing a firm C-cup breasts get his attention.

"Too much to handle yet?" She asks, happy with the results.

"Almost a year ago, I would've done violated you. Patience isn't one of my virtues, but to make it work for the long haul, I can't, no, I won't betray your trust or your body. I used to be one of Johns Creek's biggest playboys."

Without saying a word, Kristin makes her way over to Jordan and grabs him by the back of the head, pulling him in for a hard kiss that lasts for minutes. She backs away and puts her forehead against his after she shoves him on the bed.

"That was your past, not your present, and for Heaven's sake, not your future. I want you like right now, but I agree it's still too soon. You had been a playboy, but now you're my man. Next time this mood strikes, I won't take no for an answer. Now, let's snuggle up and listen to some music."

Jordan gets to his feet to pull back the covers. Kristin slides in between to wait on Jordan to join her. He's by her side, and together they lay there until their bodies calm down, and Kristin's easy breathing is the notion that she's fast asleep.

In a soft, barely audible tone, Jordan begins to pray.

"God, if you're listening, please hear me tonight. I know I've screwed up so many good things in the past, but this time I don't want to screw up again. You know more than anyone how much I love Brittney Goodman. Do me a favor, keep her happy, safe, and healthy. Even if it comes at my own expense, I can handle it. I thank you for Kristin being in my life as I feel something again. It feels great to have someone here who, in time, could be that second great love. That brings me to my second request. I don't want to love Brittney anymore. Take the love that I have for her and replace it with a growing love for Kristin. She's been terrific so far, and rather than leaving me with a heart split for two women, just let me love one of them, please. Show me in time that you're there by fulfilling this prayer and amen."

Soon after he finishes the prayer, Jordan falls asleep. In what feels like a blink of an eye, he's woken up when he feels an arm drag across his bare chest.

"Good morning handsome, I hate to cut and run, but I need to get going to get cleaned up for work. I will hopefully see you this coming weekend, yes?"

Jordan stretches and yawns before he answers.

"Hell yeah, baby, I'll come crash at your place. Be careful going home, gimme a kiss."

They exchange a kiss, and Kristin gathers her things to change in the main bathroom. Silently she sneaks through the apartment down to her SUV, where she starts it up to head home. After she pulls into the driveway, she sends Jordan a text then rushes inside to get showered for work.

Although he made that prayer, Jordan sits there reflecting on his day with Kristin. His mind battles through the positive and negative. His hands shake from anger and confusion. He's beginning to develop more feelings for Kristin, but at the same time, how he feels for Brittney pulses within his veins. Stuck at an impasse, he sits there unsure how to feel. A back and forth struggle over his time with Brittney, and now his emotions unfolding for Kristin take hold.

Jordan glances through Facebook photos, and a few tears form but don't manage to fall. From his Facebook to the photo album on his phone, the pieces that have been missing fill with Kristin's warm thoughts and feelings. The anger and confusion return whenever he stares at photos of Brittney.

It's a sensation he's never felt before. Jordan's mind isn't clear of what it wants more, but his heart beats for Brittney as his soul slowly begins to ache for Kristin. Now he understands that he needs to disconnect from one to be with the other if he wants to feel whole.
