Chapter 21 - Crushed

It takes some time for things to evolve between Brittney and Benjamin. He's semi-relocated to Johns Creek while continuing the new facility's drawn-out training with all new computer updates and material coming.

Word gets out that Brittney has a new beau, and that's something Jordan doesn't believe. He remembers how people at BRASS Eye Care love to spread gossip. Though chatter has turned to reality for most, Brittney and Benjamin do their best to keep it under wraps since his job has a higher position and it's considered a conflict of interest.

On Saturday, after Jordan clocks out of work, he makes his way back from Atlanta to wait for Brittney. Like before, he's stopped and picked up an arrangement of flowers, and unlike before, he's going to wait to see her leave and drop the flowers on her doorstep with no note.

He's only a few feet from the door when he hears laughter coming from her door. In a panic, he dashes away and hides beside a vending machine. When he sees Brittney come out, she's hand-in-hand with someone he doesn't recognize. His heart is crushed, and he forces himself to stand there to observe them walking down to Benjamin's Infiniti sports car, where Brittney plants a solid kiss on this unknown guy.

Huffing in a near panic attack, Jordan makes his way down to his truck. All he sees is blood red. He speeds towards his parents' home, nearly wrecks a handful of times.

He comes to a screeching halt in the driveway. The tires squall is so loud that Vince hears the commotion and comes from his office. He watches as Jordan nearly stumbles from the truck. Curious about what's wrong, he bolts for the front door, but Jordan's already inside.

"Jordan, son, what's wrong?"

"Where's my shotgun? I need to blow some shit up at the shooting range."

Vince reaches into his pocket to take out a set of keys to the gun cabinet in his office. Unwilling to let Jordan do something stupid, he takes out two shotguns to accompany him out to the range.

"Tell you what, let's make a day of it. It's been a while since you and I did anything like this together."

"Fine by me, I just need to shoot something!" Jordan nearly yells as his vision goes blurry.

Vince gathers a box of shells and motions for Jordan to follow him out to an Audi sedan. Together they climb inside, and Jordan lets out some of his anger.

"I saw her. I saw her with someone else. It's not right. Brittney goes on about she wasn't ready for anything serious, and yet she's out whoring around already."

Vince feels his heart drop. He's cared for Jordan since before he legally adopted him. To see him torn up in a way he's never witnessed before is nerve-racking. All of this is uncharted territory that Vince will try to explain to help ease the emotional torment.

"I don't really have anything to say to you, kid. For you to have a broken heart brings all our worlds into a different reality, to be honest. The best advice I can give you is to hold your peace and don't say anything out of the way to Britt. Brittney is very special to you, and well, don't burn bridges that can't be replaced. I know it hurts now, but who knows, maybe in time, that heart of yours that's split can mend, and you can love another wonderful woman. A woman that is more than capable of loving you and only you."

"I don't want anyone else, dad. Brittney is the one for me, and I know it. My heart beats for her in a way it never has for any other woman, and you know I've had my fair share of them."

Vince nods in agreement while they drive to the shooting range. He's always hoped that there would be someone to wrangle his adopted son in from his wild days but never thought that the one he found that made him happy would also just up and leave the way Brittney did.

"Jordan, I don't mean this is a harsh way, but this could be karma coming back to bite you in the ass."

"Yeah, it might be, but I mean, I've not done anything this bad, and I never lied to any of the women I was with about my intentions," Jordan admits with keeping a straight look on his face.

The conversation comes to an end when they reach the turn for the shooting range. Jordan walks with Vince over to a couple of side-by-side spots and hands over one of the shotguns.

Jordan loads some shells and places the sound-canceling earphones over his ears. Ready and willing, Jordan takes himself back to the last few years to get his anger stirred up for a full unleash.

"This is for everyone that never made it home from that fucked up war!" Jordan screams with two blasts.

"This is for every time I asked about my best friend who ditched me and started his life before me! We were supposed to run through Atlanta together until we were ready to call it quits!"

Several more blasts come from Jordan's weapon, and soon he's finished with the first set of shells. Jordan clears his shotgun and prepares for the second wave of shots once the firing target is replaced.

"This is for not telling me how you felt and lying to me that you loved me! You two-timing double-crossing skank!" Jordan unloads another round, nearly disintegrating the paper target.

Another few rounds go by before Jordan lets loose deeper inner thoughts. Some of which strike his adopted dad in a way.

"And this, this is for you, mom! You lied to me about my half-brother, and you never willing to tell me about where I come from. I wanted to know my father, damn it! You worried so much about your title as an ordinary bland housewife!"

"Hey, hey, hey, slow down right there, cowboy! Your mother wanted to shield you from the world of professional wrestling. When we met and how lost she was when you was about a year old or so, I remember when we met and how lost she was. Your mother had the hardest time letting go of that part of her life. She spent most of the early eighties on the road. She got pregnant with you, and they took her off the road when she was beginning to show. That's when Lara decided enough was enough after your biological father got hurt and hooked on some serious painkillers. He ran himself into the ground. Leaving your mother alone around the time you was born." Vince goes into detail to clear some of the air against Lara's wishes.

"That doesn't mean she had the right to keep all that from me! I wanted to know about her time on the road and the places she's been, and the cities she's seen. My mom was one of the best managers of her time, and I'm not good enough to hear about those stories?"

Vince does his best to give Jordan the reasons why she kept so much from him over the years.

"Take how you feel right this minute and think about this. How you feel might compare to how your mother felt when she lost it all. You found it difficult to go anywhere after you found out that Brittney was with some other man. Imagine how she would have felt going back to an industry with no friends, no one to manage, and having to face that ring and crowd every night for weeks or even months having to be forced to remember that she lost the love of her life. I love your mom with all my heart and soul, but she belonged to someone else. I'm grateful to have you both in my life. It's given me a greater propose and a reason to make Johns Creek the best I can as City Manager."

It hits Jordan like a wave upon the sand that Vince has done everything in his power to give Jordan a good life. He recalls the vacations they've taken and even helping him buy his truck when he was sixteen. Jordan takes it upon himself to go over and hug his dad. It's at the moment he finally allows himself to break and start crying in Vince's arms.

"I'm so sorry, dad! I've just lost myself, and I don't know what I'm doing or where I'm going. Without Britt, I'm lost and, and, and..."

"Shh, it's alright, son, it's alright. I know things seem dark and dreary right now but give it time. You know I am here for anything you need. I always have been, and I always will be, no matter what," Vince says.

Once they break the embrace, Jordan goes for his pocket and takes out the engagement ring. He opens the box to show it to Vince. Just then, an idea comes to him as he snatches the ring box from Jordan's hand.

"I'll be back. Just stay here and load up three shots and only three shots. I have an idea that'll 'blow' your mind off this Brittney situation."

Shortly Vince returns with some help from the attendant at the counter. They taped the ring directly where the heart is located on the paper outline of a body.

"Now, you listen to me! The target is going only halfway down the line. You have three shots to destroy that ring and put every bit of pain and agony into those shots."

Jordan finds it difficult to see the ring lined up out in front of him. The moment from the night when he proposed returns. He stands there feeling the shiver of the mountain winds blowing against him again.

"Dad, I don't think I can do this. That ring is the last thing I have from her and me. I can't take it out like that."

"Son, I love you to death but stop being a pussified little wimp and blast that piece of shit to hell. Do it and let it all go!"

Against his better judgment, Jordan unloads all three shots as fast as possible, with the ring shattering once the blast goes right through it.

Vince cries out in victory while Jordan wipes his eyes with the edge of his sleeve and returns to unloading his shotgun for another half-hour regretting his actions. Nearly out of shells for the gun, they pack things up and head back for the house. On their way back, they stop by Church's Chicken to share some time to spend together.

The entire time Jordan replays the ring scattering from his pinpoint shooting. There was nothing left, and that did nothing to improve his situation of how he feels.

By the time they pull into the driveway, Lara is coming home from a girl's day at the nail salon. She's delighted to see her two favorite guys in the world pull up. When she sees them taking the guns from the trunk of the Audi, she knows that's generally a bad sign.

"That usually means someone's pissed off. What happened, and do I need to get a lawyer for when I beat that bitch's ass?"

"You don't need to do that, mom. Brittney isn't worth losing your job."

"Uh, yes, it is worth it when it comes to protecting my son. I'd go to bat for you, your dad, and even your brother if I have to at some point. I will go to the ends of the Earth and fight the Devil himself to protect my family."

Jordan walks up to hug his mother.

"I'm fine, I am really, and I will be fine. I'm part of you, and if you can ensure everything you went through before I was born, then I can handle this. I love you, mom."

Lara peers over to Vince, who shrugs his shoulders, knowing he spilled something about her past to their son. The look of rage on her face says it all, but one thing she's never done is have it out with Vince while Jordan is present.

"I'm glad you'll be fine, and you'll understand one day if you ever have kids. You'd go to any lengths to protect them, and son, I can royally fuck someone up with all I know about fighting from my roughneck days with your father." She admits while keeping her eyes locked on Vince with an intense stare.

"Let's go inside and watch some of that old footage. One thing I've always enjoyed is seeing your old wrestling outfits. So dark and stuff, such a bad girl you were back then." Vince jokes as he waves them into the house and locks the guns up.

After some family time at Lara's expense, Jordan decides to go ahead and crash in his old room for the night. It's late by the time they finish, and he texts his brother for some advice.

Hey, it's me. Listen, you got any advice on what I can do to win Britt back? I saw her earlier with some dude, and it's been driving me up the wall. – Jordan

It doesn't take long for a reply to come back.

Hey, there little brother, I wish I had some advice, but all I can say is this. If it's meant to be, it'll happen. Please don't force it, don't rush back to it. Take some time to recollect yourself and remember to breathe. You're probably like me and have a bit of a short fuse. If it wasn't for Nikki, I'll be honest; I would have probably been dead or wound up behind bars. A good woman with a warm heart can be the difference between a good life and a great one. – Josh

You're right, and I wish I had gotten to know you better as we grew up. Man, for years, I always wanted a brother or sis, and now you're already halfway back across the globe doing God knows what for the Army. Be careful and get your ass back here to raise some hell with your real blood brother! – Jordan

That's for sure! We're going to have to tear up them streets of Hotlanta bub! I have something special that I haven't unleashed on the streets yet. I designed an engine before I was laid off with Ford, and the guy I worked for gave me the prototype Mustang it was placed in. Talk about a badass ride! – Josh

Cool deal 'bub' I can't wait for that! Anyway, I guess I need to get some rest, and you probably have to get to work. Be safe and send Nikki and my niece my best. See you when you get home. – Jordan

I definitely will and take time to heal and become a better man! I wish I had the chance to get out there to visit with Logan and stuff. I'm sure he had a blast visiting with you. He's a goof nut, but he's good people. Need anything, text me any time. Until then... – Josh

Jordan places his phone on the nightstand and stares out the window. As his eyes begin to droop, he quietly says a prayer to himself.

"God, I know I don't pray anywhere near as much as I should. For that, I am sorry, but please find it in yourself to look over Brittney for me, please. She's a wonderful woman, and I thank you for bringing her into my life. I've been lost for so long and confused about love or even understand what love is. Protect her and if she's happy, let her remain that way; even if it's not with me..." he pauses to wipe a tear from his eyes, "she deserves the best, and I want to be the best man I can be for her, but if I'm not then let her find that man and live a fulfilled life. Thank you and amen."

His eyes heavy and heartbreaking agony partially released, Jordan falls asleep for the first time in a long time and remains that way. His mother stands by the door and could vaguely hear bits and pieces of his prayer. She's proud that he's opened his heart, but she silently prays to have his pain shifted to her so he wouldn't have to suffer through it any longer. Once she's sure he's asleep, Lara goes back to her bedroom, where she nestles up to Vince and kisses him on the forehead, and shuts her eyes being content to have her family under the same roof for at least one more night.
