Chapter 10 - The New Guy
A couple of mornings go by, and when it's time for the pre-shift meeting, Jordan is surprised when a new paramedic steps out from the locker room.
"Good morning, day shift crew; we have a brand-new addition to our ranks starting today. Transferring in from West Virginia, let's welcome Alexander Myers." Clyde calls out as a round of applause echoes in the room.
"Thanks, everyone, and please call me Alex. I'm excited to be here." He says before taking a seat in the back.
Clyde goes over assignments, and before finishing the meeting, he mentions for Jordan to stay behind.
"Jordan, hold up, Alex; go ahead on out to the bay area and wait on your partner."
Alex takes his leave, and soon the door is shut.
"Listen, I know you wanted to work with Witton to be able to study more for the supervisor's test that's coming in a few months, but I want you to help break in the new kid out there. You're my best medic, and for now, since you're becoming a partial trainer, that comes with a new title. Say hello in the mirror to the new senior paramedic. Todd is leaving for nursing school, and that leaves you as the best option. The community loves you, and you bust your ass. Congratulations, you've done more than enough to earn it." Clyde informs him as they exchange a handshake and then motions for Jordan to leave.
Once the handshakes broke, Jordan heads out to the ambulance bay. He finds Alex standing around looking out at his car.
"Hey, load up, and let's get going. Yes, you're stuck with me, homeboy. I wanna see what you have in your skillset, so get ready to get busy, fast." Jordan calls out as he gets the medical bag and stuffs it into the ambulance.
All Alex gives is a single nod as he gets into the passenger seat and buckles up. When Jordan gets inside and gets everything ready to go, he looks over to Jordan.
"It's nice to meet you, Alex; I'm Jordan..." he's interrupted when he's cut short.
"Forgive my intrusion, but Justin is right. You look damn near identical. You almost even sound the same other than the accent. To be honest, it's kind of eerie." Alex mentions as he points out one more thing about his best friend. "Can you also restore and improve rides like that?"
Jordan is astounded to see a fully restored platinum red 1967 Mercury Cougar with chrome accents and bumpers. Jordan's jaw drops at the sight of the muscle car.
"I'm good with cars and trucks, but my brother did that?"
"About two years before he went into the Army. He built this when he was making bank until companies started to go under suddenly and he lost his contracts with Ford and Toyota."
That's a stunning moment for Jordan as he burns the image into his mind. He talks to his brother here and there, but there's still too much to learn about his brother—something Jordan now plans to change when the opportunity presents itself.
Off to head out through their sector, Jordan discusses what he knows to form a professional friendship and bond with Alex.
"Wait, there's no way!" Alex comments as they share a laugh.
"Yeah, man, no joke, it's tough to believe, but it's true. My father was a pro wrestler back in the '80s. That's how he met my mother, and that's why life got screwed up because my father developed a serious cocaine and alcohol problem along with steroids that ended up being why he died."
"Damn man, an overdose, that's harsh; I'm sorry, boss man," Alex says with a look of remorse.
Jordan nods and shrugs since he never knew his father. To him, it's just another thing that a shroud still hovers over his existence.
"It's no biggie, but I was shocked to learn about having a half-brother. I was pissed, but I can say this, my stepdad is an excellent guy. He's been city manager for Johns Creek for almost twenty years."
Their conversation gets cut off prematurely when they get a call over the radio.
"Unit four-four got a request for paramedics over at Atlanta Junior College for the football team. The assigned medics never showed up."
"Copy, we'll head over and be there shortly," Alex replies.
They turn their attention to making their way out to the stadium, where they pull up and take a seat on the rear of the ambulance. Alex crosses his arms while Jordan sits there to watch the practice and be there if an injury occurs.
As the humidity soars and the players deal with cramps alone, the newly formed duo returns to discussing things. From how Lara settled in Johns Creek and how, before becoming city manager, Vick helped get Lara's job with Brass Eye, and how she excelled from there on her own merits over the years.
Close to time for the team to call it a day, the assistant coach and team trainer walks over to shake hands with Jordan and Alex.
"Gentlemen, your services are no longer required for today. We would be glad to have you return tomorrow, say eight in the morning?" The assistant coach requests.
"We will be here, sir, as many days as you need us," Jordan replies with a firm handshake.
"See ya then, have a good day, gentlemen."
Once they're clear from their duty at the field, Jordan clears them for returning to the streets.
"Dispatch, this is unit four-four. We're clear for returning to patrol in our sector. Any calls for us?"
"Welcome back unit four-four, and yes, head over to Sunny Shade retirement home. We have a patient complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath."
"Heading that way dispatch, unit four-four in route." Jordan relays as he flips on the siren and returns to duty.
By the time they arrive on the scene, the nursing staff meets them out by the doors as they rush inside.
"What's the condition of the patient?" Alex begins taking the lead as Jordan gets the gurney.
"She's complaining of chest pains with shortness of breath along with what she describes as heartburn."
"How long has this been going on?"
"Not long, she woke up complaining about slight heartburn this morning. She came to see me, and I gave her some antacids. She left my office, and she's kept to herself, which is not like her."
"What's her name?" Jordan calls out, coming up with the gurney.
"Rita, Rita Hernandez," the nurse says as she takes a step back.
"Hi Rita, I'm Jordan, and this is Alex; we're here to take you to the hospital. Are you feeling okay?"
She slowly shakes her head no while Alex takes her vitals and puts an oxygen mask over her mouth.
"Well, let us help you onto our transport. We will get you the very best care, okay." Alex mentions as he gently helps the elderly lady to her feet then onto the lowered gurney.
Once she's loaded and safely strapped into place, the duo quickly leads her out to their ambulance. They flip on the sirens and for the hospital. Alex relays what information they have to the doctors who take charge once Rita is lifted and transferred onto a hospital bed.
"Great work guys, we'll take it from here, thank you." The doctor states as they begin their examination and take charge of the case.
"C'mon, man, let's get a coffee from the breakroom." Jordan offers as he begins to introduce Alex to members of the hospital staff.
After they get the run sheets completed, they return to being open for calls, but the rest of the shift goes by with typical calls for dehydrated tourists. It makes for a day of beginning to learn the area and terrain for Alex as he's enjoying the fresh start.
"Okay, I know this needs to be cleared from the air. Why did you move here? Why the transfer? It seems odd to me that your friend shows up one day, and now you're here, and you're friends with my brother. What are the odds of all this ever happening?"
"The odds are like a billion to one, but I needed to start over. I uh, I've had this on and off relationship with this girl. She was a great girl, but she got cancer, and after she passed, it was too much to take after that." Alex explains with a long look in his eyes.
"Sorry to hear that, man."
That's the line that creates silence inside the ride. A somber sensation goes on until Jordan and Alex reach the station to get ready to end their shift.
"Hey, you did well out there today. Plus, it looks like we have it easy for a few more shifts with the football team practices."
Alex signals with a thumbs up, but a call comes in as he goes to drop his hand. It's a number he doesn't expect to see.
"Hey! What's going, big man?" Alex begins as he turns to Jordan, "Dude, you ain't going to believe who I'm working with now. Nah, I left B-Ville for life a bit further down south."
There's a bit of a long pause as Alex and Jordan continue to stare at each other.
"What, wait, huh, no way!" Alex says in a broken manner as whoever he's talking to has some news to share. "That's great! Listen though, ah hell nevermind, I got someone here who would like to speak to you."
Suddenly Alex tosses the phone over to Jordan. Once he places the phone to his ear, Jordan speaks softly into the receiver.
"Hello..." He stands there and listens with a shocked expression.
"No way! You're heading to Atlanta in a couple of weeks! Ah man, that's awesome, yeah, yeah, I'll be there for sure, and I'll have this degenerate along with ya boy and me. Hey, it would be best if you met my girl. Wait, what? You're surprising your wife with this trip. Oh, I know how that goes with surprises, but yeah, road trip for sure. Yeah, I can't wait, and hey, we have to stop by my mom's on the way up. She's always wanted to meet you." Jordan says with Alex having a cocky smile on his face.
The two of them share a fist bump, and Jordan hands Alex the phone. They head back out, where Alex shows off his car to not only Jordan but the other paramedics coming in for the next shift that have their attention pulled by the antique Cougar in its parking spot.
Jordan finishes up going over the details and exchanges another fist bump, then walks away to call Brittney to share the news.
Once he's home and changes out of uniform, Jordan sends a text message to Brittney, resulting in an instant phone call as a response.
"Well, hello..." he's cut off when she starts in from his text.
"Your brother is coming home, like seriously! He's going to arrive here, and you're taking him to South Carolina, and you're working with his friend? Like, what the hell is this? How could something that extremely rare happen?"
Jordan instinctively shrugs his shoulder, trying to find the words to say.
"Fate, I guess sweetie, I mean, I can't find the words. Plus, I barely believe it other than fate. I just hope you'll come here to meet my brother. I haven't seen him in a while, and just, yeah, I want you here. You are becoming the love of my life."
Brittney's blown away from the last comment. It's tender sweet, but a corny line that has her shocked, but her heart doesn't skip a beat the way it should have with those words. She gives a slight shutter over the phone that tells Jordan she felt something. It gives him false hope as he prepares to say the following line.
"I am in love with you."
In a state of panic, Brittney doesn't know how to react. She's never been in a position like this. She's always the one to get hurt in the end. It's not like she doesn't feel for Jordan, but she's keeping herself distant to where she doesn't want to develop feelings for the well-known playboy.
"Brittney...hello, Brit-Brat..." Jordan says into the phone, bringing Brittney back to reality.
"I hate that name! Look, yeah, I'll be there. I'll go with you."
"And"
"And what, okay, yeah, fine, I love ya too. I have to go. I'll see you this weekend."
Brittney ends the call, and Jordan pulls the phone away to send a text.
You hung up too quickly for me to tell you that he will be here in about two weeks. I can't wait! I get to spend some time with my brother.
My bad, babe; yeah can't wait to meet him. Just don't get your hopes up. I have to go though, text you soon, later, Jordy.
Around the time Jordan reads the message, he's ready to head out for an evening session at the gym. He sends Alex a text and the address to meet him there since Brad is preoccupied with the upcoming wedding and getting his construction company off the ground with new partners.
By the time Alex arrives, he's in a different vehicle than his Cougar. He comes in a midnight blue Mazda CX-5 SUV and climbs out with his bag going over his shoulder.
"Where's your car?"
"Back at the hotel, I'm staying at for now. I drove it down here while Justin drove this for me since it was packed. I thought about staying with him and his wife, but then I realized how long the drive is one-way, and I was like, yeah, no. He brought it down to the hotel for me so I could have my stuff." Alex explains as they stand by the door.
Inside the gym, Jordan is impressed that Alex can lift as much as he can and nearly keeps up with him on the treadmill. Alex doesn't have the traditional lean cut muscle; he appears slim but not in shape.
"Damn man, you're killing it!" Jordan calls out as they push the other to new heights. "Hey, I gotta crazy idea. My roommate just moved out and today is the first day I haven't pulled nearly a double. I could use a roommate, and who better than one of my brother's best friends. There's plenty of parking for both your rides and splitting the bills; you won't go broke."
"Sounds good. Let's finish our workout, and I'll start bringing my stuff over this weekend. I paid for the week already, and thanks. Justin was right. Coming here will be a blessing. Welcome to the family, we're a bit screwed up, but we're always here for each other." Alex says with the first bump to Jordan as they both smirk and continue in the gym, trying to get the other to call it quits.
