Chapter 29

Eva POV

A few days later it is determined that I can return back to Blackrose. The doctor's figured that it was the best place for me to recuperate since it is where the last memories that I have come from. I can't argue with the logic, and it would be great to see familiar faces during my recovery.

Once we arrive back at Blackrose, I am surrounded by all my friends here. But I am so exhausted, I am immediately taken to the clinic to gain my strength and get an assessment for the therapy I might need. Just a little more time is needed before I am cleared to stay in one of the guest rooms.

"Eva you have some visitors now. I can only send them in one at a time, so that you aren't too overloaded." The nurse informs me.

"Ok."

Of course the first one to poke his head through the door is the one who rejected me.

"What the hell are you doing her Isaiah? I thought my mom made it perfectly clear that I did not want to see you!"

"She did but due to recent events, I just stopped by to make sure you're ok."

"I'm ok. Just leave me alone." I whisper.

"Eva, I'm sor.." His sentence was cut off by machines going off. Apparently my heart monitors were going crazy.

"You - out!" was the last I heard before the world went black.

I woke up later, at some point, with a familiar white-haired comedian sitting next to me.

"Julian?" He doesn't answer. "Jujube!" I yell.

"You know I hate that nickname, Evangeline." He groggily mutters.

"Well I tried other ways to wake you."

"You didn't try the best." He winked with a smirk on his face.

"Perv." I mumble.

"You love this perv."

"No"

"Admit it - you love me." He says as he crept forward like we was going to tickle me.

"Julian Le Tourneau, don't you dare. They'll kick you out too."

"Just admit it."

"Fine I hate that I love you, best friend - satisfied?"

"As well as can be." He says flatly, but I noticed a hint of something else in his eyes - I couldn't quite decipher.

"So tell me everything that's been going on."

All of a sudden we are interrupted by a tall guy with spiky brown hair and beautiful coffee brown eyes.

"May I help you?" I ask politely.

"You don't remember me?" He responds with sadness.

"Sorry, I don't." with that he rushes out of the room in tears.

"What's going on Julian? I take it that guy is someone important in my life."

"Eva..." He hesitates.

"Spit it out JD!"

"That's your second chance mate." He informs me, but there is a hint of sadness in the corners of his eyes.

"No. I couldn't have found him. I was with you." I protest.

"You left to go visit Tidewater and New Dawn Packs. He is the future Alpha of the New Dawn Pack. I wouldn't lie about something this important Eva."

"But...Julian...no." I cry.

"Shh, it's ok." He tells me gently grabbing my hand.

"But...Julian." I say again looking him directly in the eyes.

"Not now Eva. This isn't the time. I know - ok. We both know, and that will just have to be enough." He says sincerely.

"I..."

"No Eva. I know - don't say it - ok - it will only hurt both of us in the end."

We sit there in relative silence watching a movie. I have no idea what to think. I love Julian - I don't want another mate, but I guess the fates decided otherwise. Hopefully I will regain my memories soon because the pain of loving Julian and being tied to another person is actually breaking my heart. The only thing that was going to help was the fact that I knew Julian was waiting on his mate, and apparently I wasn't going to be that mate. She is going to be one lucky lady - whoever she is.

Today is the first time I've come outside since I've been back to Blackrose. Deciding to go to the training grounds to get some light stretching done, I hobble on my crutches slowly making it to a small section of the training grounds that isn't full of training warriors.

Isaiah must have seen me struggling to get out, and he comes over to offer assistance. As much as my heart pains at the sight of him, I have still forgiven him and we are slowly building a friendship. So much could have been if he would have just trusted me when we first discovered we were mates. Now my heart belongs to someone else and apparently my life to another. That doesn't mean that Isaiah and I can't have a friendship because in some ways I do still love him - he was my first crush, my first kiss and basically my first mate.

All of a sudden I see Delano coming from behind the trees - this doesn't bode well for me.

Sucking in a breath, I steady my nerves.

"How did you get out Delano?"

"Stupid young guard. Didn't have a clue that I wasn't having an actual seizure."

Pausing momentarily after seeing what was probably shock on my face, he maniacally laughs.

"He isn't dead if that's what you're wondering Evangeline."

"No but you might not be alive long."

"Neither will you, because if I can't have you - no one can."

"Why Delano - Why?"

"I told you before - you are the most beautiful girl in all the world, and I wanted to make you mine. But people had to go and ruin that." He sneers, and stalks closer.

"Not any closer man." Isaiah warns - coming out from behind some trees.

"And what are you going to do about it, pretty boy. Aren't you the one who broke her heart?"

Isaiah's face immediately falls, and Delano knows he's found a sore spot.

"You don't deserve her, her mate doesn't deserve her, no other man deserves her - but it seems she won't see reason." He sneers.

All of a sudden, I see a flicker of light and see Delano produce a knife from behind his back.

"Delano, you don't have to do this. We can work this out." I try to cajole him.

"Yes I do. No one will have you but me." He states as he continues to back me into a grouping of trees - stumbling back as I lose my crutches, and I can't hold my full weight on both my legs.

"No Delano - please." I beg, and I see him bring the knife back.

Before he can strike another body comes between me and Delano - Isaiah. And I can't stop what is going to happen next because it's quicker than even my powers.

A group of warriors is now coming quick but not before the knife plunges into Isaiah's chest. Isaiah slumps back against me, and I see Delano quickly being wrestled to the ground. Slowly I lower Isaiah to the ground.

"You caught me this time princess. I'm sorry I wasn't always there to catch you. I'm sorry I won't be able to catch you anymore."

"But you said always."

But I knew something wasn't right because the knife had gone in the chest right around where the heart lied. If the knife punctured the heart at all, the outside layer of the heart would fill with blood and eventually cause the heart to stop bleeding.

"Sometimes we can't always keep our promises. And I haven't always been there to catch you."

"No Isaiah." I cried, knowing that his words rang true.

Now I couldn't stop the floodgates from opening and my tears from flowing.

Isaiah looks up to me "Don't cry Eva. It was the least I could do after I broke your heart."

"Isaiah, I love you - please don't..." he puts his hand up to stop me and pulls my face so I can see him.

"My biggest regret was rejecting you and not being able to show you how much I love you." Isaiah started wheezing slightly.

"I love you Evangeline Leah Gray." He kissed me softly, letting his lips linger just a little before pulling away and looking me in the eyes.

"I always ha..." and his eyes flutter closed.

Once I didn't hear his heart beating anymore, I was seeing red - quite literally. Knowing that they would have taken Delano down to the cells - that's where I went. The adrenaline pumping through my vein helping me ignore the pain shooting from my still healing leg. Getting there, everything in that cell disappeared but Delano. I don't think I truly understood the definition of blind fury until that point. I felt my body start to shake - some sort of power continuing to grow.

"What did you do Delano?!!" I roared in a voice that seemed only slightly like my own.

"If I can't have you, no one will Evangeline." He leers.

"Evangeline is taking a nap at the moment Delano."

"So who are you?" He scoffs.

"Your worst nightmare!!" My wolf bellowed. "Guards! Open this cell."

"But..." One of the guards muttered.

"NOW!!" My wolf roared.

"Now. now. You don't want to do anything stupid." Delano struggled to get his words out.

"This won't be stupid. It will be better for society. Trust me. Kidnapping - check. Murder - check. Delusional - check. Yep - better for society."

"What's better?" He questioned shakily.

"Your death!" I yelled, as I stalked towards him still blinded by the rage in me.

'No' was the last word that guy ever uttered before I tore him to shreds. The only thing left of the guy was pieces and his blood all over my clothing.

"Burn what's left!" I screamed at the guards while I strut out of the cells.

My wolf finally allowed me to take over again, and I quickly crossed the field to where Isaiah's body was.

"I'm so sorry Isaiah - you didn't deserve death." I told him, as I cradle his body.

I remember people trying to come close to me and just growl at them. Eventually Julian approaches me.

"Eva. Eva." He whispered, trying to get my attention.

"Julian?"

"Eva, it's time to let go."

"No Julian, he saved my life. No one deserves to die because of me. He gave his life for mine. It's not fair." I cried.

"Eva, he made this choice. Delano was going to kill you. Isaiah choose to save you."

"I loved him, Julian. I really did. He would have been a good mate." I whispered.

Not having anything else I could say, I just sat there rocking - still holding Isaiah. Eventually Julian was able to make arrangements for Isaiah's burial, and I finally let go.

A few days later we bury Isaiah in Duskfall Cemetery, the cemetery located on Blackrose territory. There are empty vaults there along a wall for fallen warriors, Julian chose to have Isaiah interned there - which I appreciate. Isaiah gave his life for mine, and that is something that I will never forget. He might have rejected me, but I understood why - not that it didn't break my heart. At least I got to tell him I loved him before he died. So much love and so much loss - part of my memory being one of those things.
