Please Don't

((Hey guys! Phew, that first chapter really a long one, but I probably won't make the other chapters as long, but they'll still have length to them! Anyways, this chapter is a little more sad and shit so uh, you've been warned! I don't know if it'll make you cry though, I'm not that good yet lmao. Anyways, I'll leave you with one last thing. The song linked into this chapter is basically where I got my ideas from so :,) Enjoy!))

-----------------------------

You've lost all hope from anything.

One of the best things that ever happened to you got ripped away from you once again. Sure, you've got your friends- well, er, you've got a friend now. She means everything to you now because it's all you have left.

You might have Dave and John, but they're only 16. You couldn't depend on them like you did Roxy. Those two were also effected by the horrible news that came to your door late one night, but all you could do for them was support them from behind like an older brother, not like a friend. You didn't want to lose another one if those.

The night of the news made you feel even more sick than you were for the past few days before hand. You were still under the weather when they came to tell you the news.

Dirk said he would be back the next day and would see you then, so you grew impatient waiting for him. You decided to go wait at the kitchen table like he did for you that one time. Roxy wasn't there currently because you said it was fine if she went on a mission as well. You were feeling better, so that was always a good thing. Without Roxy there, you had no one there to fuss at you, which was a nice change for once.

You wrapped one of the blankets Dirk gave you that first day you were sick and held it close. It was cold out in the kitchen, especially the cold tiles that made you shiver with each step you took. It must've been some natural law or something for kitchens to be cold all the time for some reason, or at least you would like to believe.

The city looked wonderful during the night as all the lights from the buildings and street lights below just made it glow. The night time was the best time for the city, well, at least to look at. When night came, so did bad things such as demons. That's why every mission was mainly during the night time. It just made it easier to find the demons, but not necessarily easier to kill. You were always up for a challenge though, so you didn't really mind.

It wasn't long before the sun rose up from beyond the horizon, showing off the bay side of the city as the water reflected the sun quite well. It was always a nice sight to see as well and you tried to see it every morning, although that wasn't possible all the time because of missions or being too tuckered out from missions to wake up.

You stayed there, watching the sun fully rise into the afternoon. You kept your eyes attached to the streets below as you awaited for Dirk and Jane to hop out of one of the cars any minute now. It should've only taken them a night to do this mission. Dirk read out the mission details to you so he made sure you would approve of it. It sounded like an easier mission, only three class 4 demons.

There was 10 official classes of demons out there, and you've seen a class 10 demon before. They were terrifying. Only your grandma has been known for getting one of those by herself. You were there too and very young. It was at her old cabin and you were out in the garden, whispering to the pumpkins to grow faster so you could get some delicious pumpkin pie in your belly soon. That's when you looked up to see a tall figure standing in the tree line, watching you. It was about as tall as the tree. At first you thought it was a pumpkin god coming to bless your pumpkins, so you walked up to it with rushed footing. Luckily enough your grandma saw the whole thing and attacked it with spells and her rifle because little did your toddler mind know that this demon loved to feast on kids because the more pure the prey was, the more energy they would gain.

Man, you're grandma sure was a badass. You still strived to be at her level some day, but that day wouldn't come until years later. You could only kill a level 6 by yourself so far and that was on accident. You almost lost your life then too. It still gives you nightmares.

Well, used to compared to what was soon to happen.

You sat at that table for about 4 days. Of course you ate and such, but you were getting seriously concerned. You knew for a fact that those two were completly capable of killing about three class 4 demons with ease.  They could do that alone so they should be able to do it easily with two of them. It just didn't settle well in your stomach.

You managed to fall asleep eventually as you rested your head on the table. You only got a couple hours into your sleep before being awoken by loud banging on your apartment door. Roxy was home now, but she was probably too tired to deal with anything right now since she just came back from the mission.

You stood from your spot at the table as you rubbed your eyes trying to get rid if the crust around your eyes. You stumbled across the hallway before reaching the door, taking a moment to open the door. Maybe it was Dirk and Jane, well, you hoped. They should be able to open the door, but maybe they lost their keys. What was on the other side of the door is something you would've never guessed. There were two hunters that worked as investigators of hunting missions when...well, someone dies.

"Can I help you?" You asked with hesitation, not sure if you were ready to hear the answer. You hoped in the back of your head that they were just here to ask some questions. It has happened before, so that was probably all.

Probably.

"Are you Jake English?" The taller one asked as she scanned you up and down, looking a bit sad for you. Maybe it was because you looked horrible from being sick. That had to be it.

"Yes.." You were still so unsure if you wanted to talk to them right now. You were so tired.

"Is Roxy Lalonde here too?" She asked once more as the other one was looking over some files in her hands as she moved her lips as if she was reading over the file to herself.

"Yes, but she just got back from a mission. I'm not sure if she's awa-"

"She'll want to be awake." She interrupted as she still looked sad for you, but serious at the same time.

"Oh..um, okay," You glanced at the two of them before stepping out of the way from the doorway, allowing them entry, "You can go have a seat at the table over there and I'll bring her out."

They both nodded and stepped in, sitting as where you instructed for them to sit. You eyed them for a moment before shaking your head and walking towards Roxy's room. Thoughts kept swarming your mind of why they were here. It couldn't be about Dirk and Jane, that was impossible, right? The four of you were gonna become the best hunters out there. You were going to become the greatest out there and make even class 10 demons fear your group. Right? That was the plan. They couldn't back away from that dream. You needed the four of you to make that happen.

You knocked softly onto her door as you instantly heard her shifting around. She must've woken up from the knocking of the two other hunters, but not fully.

"Jakey, is that you?" She slurred out in her half asleep state while you heard stumbling towards her door from the other side. She opened it slowly and looked at you, smiling at you tiredly.

"Yeah, it's me," You smiled back the best you could, it was hard to smile back when your thoughts were bringing you to the verge if tears, "But uh, we have company from the base."

She quickly frowned in worry as she noticed your uneasy state. She knew something was up now.

"Well, alright." She said with a more awaken tone as she exited her room, gently closing the door behind her, standing beside you now. You automatically took a grip of her hand as she willingly let you do so, giving your hand a squeeze.

"We're in this together Jakey." She gave you a small smile as she looked up at you, nudging you gently with her elbow. You couldn't help but smile back and give her a small nod. She was right, you were in this together. It felt like it would be that way for a long time now.

You took her over to the table as you two sat by eachother across from the two hunters. They didn't seem to judge you for holding hands or anything because the news they held would probably involve you two clutching eachother and sobbing into eachother's shoulders.

"We have some sad news for you.." The taller one of the two sighed out, putting her hands on the table.

That's all you needed for confrontation.

You threw up.

--------------------------------

It's been a few weeks since that horrible night and the days since then have been so slow. You held a funeral for Jane and Dirk, but there were no actual bodies to be given proper burial to. They never found their bodies so they believed they were taken away to be feasted on by the nest or gang. They weren't sure how many there exactly was, but there was for sure more than just three.

That day you made an oath with Roxy that it would be your duty to take custody of Dave and John, making sure you would watch them to your very last breath in honor of Jane and Dirk. It was the least you could do afterall.

That day was a very rough day but it ended with the four of you watching some Disney movies in a big huddle of  four bodies. It felt nice, but it didn't feel right. Someone's heat felt missing.

It's been a while since then and you've been thinking nonstop about needing to find something, but you didn't know what it was. Something in your gut kept telling you to get away.

Apperntly so was Roxy's, so you both desired a new start. You couldn't keep sleeping in Dirk's bed to soak up as much of his scent as possible. You needed to move on before it ate you alive. Roxy agreed for she has been doing the same with Jane's bed. Those two dated in secret for about six months before Jane died. You kinda guessed that though, it was obvious even for you. That was saying something.

It was the afternoon and you were sitting in a local café with Roxy, Dave, and John. You needed to discuss this with all of them so they knew the plan and to see if they agreed on it.

"So, we're going to go live somewhere else? Like, how far?" Dave questioned as he took a sip from his hot chocolate, getting some whipped cream on his upper lip. He didn't bother to wipe it off either because you knew the answer, he was saving it for later. Dirk did that too.

"Only about an hour away so it won't be a too big of a change so soon." Roxy calmly stated as she stared at his whipped cream mustache. She grabbed a napkin from the table and leaned over the table to wipe it away. He tried slapping her hands away, but she was determined to win, so she did.

"That's not too bad then." John hummed as he watched Dave and Roxy, letting out a small chuckle as Roxy flipped him off once fully getting the whipped cream off. He returned the gesture back quickly which earned a few stares and snickers from people around the café. You swore you were surrounded by children sometimes.

"Jakey said he had a place all ready for us too," She nudged you with her elbow as you smiled to her with a small smile, "It's his grandma's old cabin in the outskirts of the city we'll be working at now with the base there."

"Ew, an old lady's house." Dave teased as he looked smug for a second until getting kicked in the shin underneath the table from Roxy.

"That "old lady" was the most kickass hunter to ever live. She even made class 10 demons seem like nothing because she killed those by herself." Roxy hissed while digging her heel into his shin until he kicked it away.

"Damn, talk about a badass grandma." Dave couldn't help but be amused, you didn't blame him. He also seemed a bit scared though for tempering and making fun of her. You also didn't blame him for that either. If you didn't know her as the loving grandma she was, you would be scared too.

"So," John cleared his throat, trying to ease the tension, "When are we leaving for this cabin?"

"Sometime this week, it won't take too long to get prepared. The base already knows about us going to the other base and such, so it won't be too much of a trouble." You hummed back in response, letting your fork fiddle with the remains of your salad.

You all seemed pleased with such a plan as you continued your lunch in peace, enjoying a few laughs with one another as it went on.

This was for sure a good decision.

Plus, it wasn't too far, only an hour West from here, what could be the harm?

------------------------

It only took a couple of days to pack up everything onto the U-haul truck only a small pang of guilt hitting your heart.

You took your last moments in the apartment to lay down in your bed, imagining Dirk there like you two were that one night. That was the one huge thing you wanted to take with you, so you tried to memorize every single breath shared between the two of you during that night. You didn't want to leave with pain and the grief from this place, you wanted to think of it as one of the best times in your life.

You eventually met everyone outside on the street as they crawled into the front of the truck. You could already tell it was going to be one cramped hour drive. Well, longer than an hour because the cabin was in the outskirts.

You were assigned to be the driver of the group because the other two were still on their learner's and out of you and Roxy, only you knew the way.

The drive went smoothly as Roxy jammed out to some tunes with Dave rapping along with her to Nicki Minaj. John was passed out on your shoulder which didn't bother your driving much, so it was fine. You just kept focused on the road ahead and tapped your fingers along to some occasional songs you recognized.

Once you got to the cabin, everyone was rushing to get out of truck, trying to take a breath of freedom. It was very packed in the front of that truck, so everyone was stretching out themselves. You earned yourself a few looks of amusement and disgust as your joints popped the loudest out of all of them. You just shrugged in response.

The other three decided to get used to the area by exploring the woods some. You warned them to not be out for too long because of the unpacking and the animals that came out as night fall came. Some demons also lived in the back of the woods too for good cover, but usually they were more timid of hunters because they weren't used to them. That doesn't mean they weren't dangerous though. Sometimes they could be more dangerous.

Once they left, it looked like it was only you, the truck, the cabin, and a fuck ton of boxes. You sighed as you looked at them all. You could already feel the back pain kicking in.

----------------------------

It took about four hours for the three of them to return from their little adventure. You, at this point, have already unloaded most of the boxes and took the liberty of unpacking the boxes and decorating as you pleased. You also got to pick your room, so you claimed the master bedroom for yourself. It was your grandma's old room so it just felt right for you to sleep there.

You gave Roxy the next biggest room, Dave and John could choose what rooms they wanted with the three that were left. This house used to fit quite the family in here when your blood line used to be big. Now you were the only one left that you knew of with the English name.

Roxy came bursting into the house first, clearly out of breath as she clutched onto your shoulders. You couldn't help but gently pat her head.

"Dude," She heaved out, "You've got to make a map or something."

"I already have," You hummed, a sly smile coming across your lips, "It's in my head."

Your smartass comment earned you a slap to the back of your head which you could only laugh off as she grumbled underneath her breath.

"Idiot." Was her last word before she went back out towards the truck.

Next was the trouble duo Dave and John, which worried you because Dave came in with John on his back, sound asleep.

"Is he okay?" You questioned with a hint of worry, eyeing the two of the boys.

"Yep, he's good," He said plainly as he set John down on the couch, making sure he was comfortable laying there, "He was just tuckered out from the lack of sleep he got last night.  Poor dude was too nervous."

You nodded as you looked over to John then back at Dave. You might as well finish up with the last few boxes and help Roxy before she breaks her back with one of the really heavy ones.

The rest if that night was filled with laughter over diner, jokes, and dreams of what wonderful things you four could manage to do here. It all appeared to be promising, it really did.

You couldn't be happier feeling like part of something important again.

------------------------------

The next few days after the move was spent settling in and signing into the new base. Something about this whole thing just felt so easy going and nice. You knew it wouldn't stay that way for long once you and Roxy get back to work and Dave and John go back to hunter training school at the base.

Other than that, you choose to enjoy the free time you had. You spent it by reading outside in the back porch on the old swing chair she set up out there when you were younger and exploring the area once more like you once did when you were little. It was getting to be too cold to start anything in the garden yet, so you would have to wait for that until the spring came.

Well, you tried enjoying it in peace. The other three were quite the loud bunch, although you didn't have much room to talk. You could be quite the rowdy one given the right circumstances.  You just wanted to enjoy this peacefulness before it got crazy, but it seemed like that wasn't going to happen quite yet.

However, it wasn't just them that stirred up the peacefulness of the cabin.

On one late night while you were the only one still awake as you watched your favorite television show, Criminal Minds, you heard a knock on your door. It was an odd time for any visitors, especially all the way out here. You carefully approached the door, looking out the keyhole in the door to see who was there. Yet, there was no one there.

You quickly went on high alert as you carefully opened the door, peering out to take a good look at your surroundings. There was still nothing or anyone there. Well, so you thought until you tried to step out, the front of your boot hitting a basket on the ground. The basket started to cry.

Wait.

Baskets don't cry.

Your gaze quickly shot down to look at the basket laid gingerly onto your porch. It seemed like whatever was emitting that crying noise was hidden underneath the light green blanket.

You carefully bent down to pick up the basket, taking it inside and shutting the front door behind you. You sat the basket down onto the kitchen island, unsure if you really wanted to see what was in it.

It took sometime, but you eventually manned up and looked into it, gently moving the blanket away from the subject underneath the folds of the cloth. Inside the basket was a small baby who couldn't be over a year old as her long black hair laid underneath her body along with a small white pup that was curled up against her side.

As soon as her tiny little hands reached out for you, you just knew something was right as your smile was instantly brightened.

You picked up the tiny little thing carefully and cradled her in your arms, gently patting her back. A note seemed to have been underneath her, so you adjusted your arms so you could hold her with one hand and use the other to read the note.

"Please take care of our daughter, Jade. By the time you receive her, we will already be dead, Jake. We're sorry we placed this onto you, but we had no other option. I hope you may understand. -Love, the Harley's"

Ah yes, the Harley blood line. How could you forget?? They were related to you afterall. Jade was most likely your cousin then, but she had other plans.

"G'pa!" Was all that escaped her small lips as she reached for your glasses, finding them rather amusing. You allowed her to take those away from you, but grandpa? Did you really look that old? You would have to check in the mirror again sometime soon.

Man, this was going to be hard to explain how you not only gained a new member to the bunch, but also a new dog.

You decided to name the dog Bec.

--------------------------

It's been about four years since you've settled into the cabin with the other four. Dave and John were now 20 and Jade was now 5. She was learning things at an alarming rate. She even almost shot Roxy's hand off which earned a huge scolding towards you for leaving your pistols out for a child being able to reach them. You couldn't help but be laughing along with Jade though. God, her laugh was contagious.

Roxy was also now 25 and you were 24, which really made you two feel old. You didn't like the feeling that you were only 6 years away from being 30 and Roxy was only 5.

However, with the years, you've both gotten stronger. You could now kill a class 8 demons by yourself which you were so proud of. Roxy was still stuck at class 7 which you made sure to tease her about. You didn't do it too much though because she almost shot your toe off for doing so. She just said that she may not be able to kill a class 8 demons yet but she could kill of a class 10 douchebag pretty easily. You have shut your mouth ever since then.

Dave and John were also doing very well when it came to hunting too. Dave could kill class 5 demons by himself and John could kill of class 4 demons by himself. John was a little behind, but it was mainly because he was still a little too iffy about the whole killing thing. You didn't really blame him though, it wasn't the easiest pill to swallow.

Usually hunter training starts young, but you didn't want to force that kind of life onto Jade. You believed that she should have a choice if it's what she wanted to do or just go to a normal school. So far, you were just teaching her the basics of hunting while also homeschooling her. You spent days with her but you allowed anyone who was here off of a mission at night to watch over her. You all made a pact to at least have one of you stay home at all times to keep an eye out for her because out here in the outskirts, no one is nearby. The closest hospital is a good half an hour away.

You also had to worry about a four year old dog who still had the puppy attitude. He was a huge dog too which made it worse when he would tackle you from behind or try to sit in your lap still. He would sleep curled up to Jade and you during the night. Jade was still too scared to sleep in her own room, so you did your best to protect her. At this rate, you might as well give her the master bedroom when she's older.

Life and the missions at work seemed to be going smoothly for the past four years, thankfully. It was rough at first to get back into it since it wasn't too long after you lost Jane and Dirk. Of course you still miss them nowadays, nothing will be the same like those days, but that didn't mean you should let that hold you back.

Now you became more responsible, even being dubbed as the dad of the group by Roxy and Dave. You were the one to take care of everyone for the most part, especially Jade and Bec.

Life was good.

For a little while.

--------------------------

Tonight was yet another mission that you and Roxy went on. You guys also made a pact that no matter how easy or hard the mission was, you always went on it with at least one more person. It was just to keep safety and from having yet another event like Dirk and Jane.

So far, the hunt was going pretty well. You two were to infiltrate a small pack of demons and their hideout. It wasn't too bad of a job and you've for sure done worse and harder missions than this. However, something felt funny about this one.

The mission kept it's steady pace and the feeling in your stomach only knotted together more to create on tangled up mess of mixed feelings. You told Roxy about it and she said it was probably just something you ate earlier. She could be right, you would like to assume so at least.

It stayed that way for a while as it appeared like you both cleared the hideout pretty well. You both decided to split up to cover more ground and just to double check anything. You two both had signals you made up with morse code that you send to eachother if anything happened. You would just tap onto the small pad device Roxy made and it would send the message to the other which would be beeped into their earpiece. You had to give it to her for being so brilliant with this kind of thing.  It saved both of your asses plenty of times.

You were almost done with clearing up the east side of the building when you saw something move in the corner of your eye. Your hands instantly moved to the holsters around your waist where your guns were placed, taking a firm grip on the handles of them and holding out your trigger finger so you could quickly whip them out and fire them if needed.

You turned on your heel as you watched your surroundings very closely, taking soft and cautious steps around you. The figure that moved hasn't made it's appearance again for a while and if it was Roxy, she would've quickly let you know. Now was not a time for playing games, especially with a hunter on high alert with loaded pistols.

You let your guard slowly lower as you let your hands relax again, but still keeping a good lookout. You began to tap onto the pad attached to your hip to signal your message to Roxy about the figure and you not being quite sure if it was clear yet. She responded quickly and said she would be heading my way shortly after she cleared her own area.

Your finger went to go tap onto the pad again, but you were quickly stopped when a blow from behind hit you. It was from a sword to be exact and it made your eyes go wide as you felt your shirt and some of your back being sliced open. It wasn't too bad or too deep of a cut luckily, but it was still not good. Now your blood could be smelt by any thirsty demons nearby.

"Fucking hell." You cursed out as you stumbled a bit, trying to catch your footing once more. You turned to face the direction the blow came from as you whipped out one of your pistols, but you were hit from behind once more, causing you to cry out some as part of the fresh wound crossed with the first one. God, it hurt so bad. This cut was a little deeper too. That wasn't the worst of your issues though.  You were baffled by how fast this bugger was moving.

"Why you're a little lively one, aren't you?" You muttered underneath your breath as your eyes crazily scanned the area around you, trying to spot the fiend. You turned on your heel to face the spot the blow came from once more, but this time you quickly held the pistol over your shoulder as it was handled upside down in your hand. You shot it quickly behind you, earning a pleasing hissing noise from it. This was easy, you just had to figure out there game and play along with it, well, with a couple new rules of your own, of course.

"Not so smart now, are we chap?" You hummed as you looked over your shoulder to see the figure gone once more. Great. Now you lost track of it. It could be anywhere, especially with how fast it moved. This time, you kept your pistols out and loaded to be prepared to shoot at any moment.

You took careful, but quicker steps this time. You wanted to get to Roxy to make sure this pain in the ass demon didn't get to her first. That was the plan at least.

That plan's actions were stopped in it's tracks as you felt arms wrap around you from behind as they forced you to slam head on with the wall. That impact made a cracking noise come from your glasses and a groan of pain from your lips. You could taste the blood in your mouth as it dribbled out of your nose. You didn't even want to know how bad your nose was going to feel tomorrow because you knew it was most likely broken or even fractured if that impacted cracked your glasses.

That wasn't the worst part, the worst part was that the warmth from the demon's arms felt so fimilar that it made your stomach do a flip and your heart skip a beat.

"Who's not so smart now?" The all too fimilar voice taunted at you, making tears well up in your eyes. This was not true. This must've been a hallucination.

Yet, the name still came from your lips in a strained voice along with a gunshot.

Afterall, a heart never forgets.
