Betrayal
Jake hasn't woken up in four days and you haven't slept for four days.
He's never been like this, and it has you worried sick. You haven't let your eyes off of him since he randomly fainted that one night. He was fine, perfectly fine, then he just suddenly passed out with a hellish fever. He wasn't the type to get sick like this, but you don't think it's a natural sickness. It's impossible for it to be that.
It was Dirk's doing and you knew it.
Jake was fine even after his fight, even smiling while getting stitches done. It was just so sudden it still has you shooken up. You've already lost two of your close friends, one that you dated, but still lost. You couldn't afford to lose him too. This whole house hold would fall apart without him, especially Jade. The both of you wanted the best life for her and this was not the way to do it.
Jade has been in his room nonstop along with you, but you wouldn't let her near him. You didn't know what was wrong exactly but for some reason, you had a gut feeling you knew exactly what was going on. You just couldn't place your finger on it, but it was there.
A small sigh escaped your lips as your eyes were glued to Jake's chest rising up and falling back down showing that he was calm for now. Sometimes he would start breathing heavily and even start thrashing around some with a handful of screams to go with it. This had to do with what Dirk did to him, you just don't know what or how to approach it.
Even if you did know what to do, you have no idea where Dirk is to pin him down and force him to fix Jake. Maybe even grab Jane. You haven't seen her yet, but if Dirk was a demon now you just knew she was too. They didn't deserve it, but there's also no changing it. You couldn't dwell on it too much, instead you had to solve the problem which was something you were fairly good at.
It would just be easier if he was awake to help you. Instead, he was there, sweating and shivering at the same time as even he looks like he's lost some color in his skin. He had the darkest skin out of all of you so it meant bad news if even he looked discolored when sick.
"Roxy..." Your head towards the source of the noise, seeing Jade standing at the doorway with soup in hand with Bec by her side.
"Is he ever going to wakeup?" She looked like she was on the verge of tears and you couldn't blame her. She's never seen Jake ill or sick yet which is why this scared you too.
"Of course he is sweetie," You smiled sadly at her as she set the soup on Jake's nightstand before walking over to you, hopping onto your lap which you allowed her to do, "I just don't know when yet."
You let her lean against you as she wrapped her arms around your torso, holding you close. You let your hand fall on the top of her head and gently begin to smooth her wild hair down. She cried softly into you and you also let her do that, only doing your best by holding her as close as you could.
You needed your brain to figure out what it was thinking and fast before it was too late.
You couldn't risk anything else that you loved anymore, it was too much of a heartache for you to deal with.
------------------------------
It's now been six days and Jake still hasn't even opened his eyes. He keeps getting worse as his fever only gets higher and his dreams worse. His actions have also been getting worse as he's been more mobile now too. You caught him in the corner of his room, sitting there, mumbling something to himself. At first, you were happy to find that he was moving, but then you realized that he was just sleepwalking.
You've been force feeding him soup lately and making him drink water too, but not too much so he didn't end up throwing up in his sleep and accidentally choking on it. Jade was even forming bags underneath her eyes now that compete with your own. Dave and John have been the ones reporting to base and telling them what's going on. They said if it didn't die down in a few more days, they would send an exorcist to make sure nothing was possessing him.
At this point, you would believe it, even if it didn't sound right to you.
You now sat outside for a while as you watched the rain come down, gently landing on the leaves of the garden plants that Jake happily planted with the four of you, even teaching Jade a few things as well. Jade instantly fell in love with it as she tends to it almost everyday with Jake, even out of growing season.
Then your eyes shifted to the flower section of the garden. You personally planted that part yourself with your friendly helper Jade. It was a fun experience because it reminded you of the days you would create gardens with your mother. Her favorite flower was a rose.
Wait.
Rose.
Rose.
It's been her this entire time.
You immediately got up and told Dave and John to keep an eye over Jade and Jake why you were out.
You had business to take care of.
--------------------------
Your hands shifted the curtains out of the entryway to a room that was overpowered by essence of lavender and peppermint. It smelt lovely, but you weren't fooled by it.
The interior was dark and the room had shelves stacked with trinkets and weird spell books you hoped to never see again.
You walked up to the front desk and gently tapped on the bell at the desk. You instantly heard footsteps come from the back room as your younger sister stepped out from the corner, a calm smile on her face but her eyes bore daggers into you.
You wished you could like her, you really do. She was sweet on the inside, but a pure demon every where else, even if she wasn't physically one.
"Well well," She hummed as she walked over to you while keeping her gaze glued onto your own, "What do I owe you this fine evening? Or more like, what do you want?" Her tone was calm but had a bit of a bitter under bite to it hinting that she didn't want you here either.
"Strider." You glared back at her as you leaned onto the counter top, trying to seem calm so she didn't pester you more but also demanding.
"Which one?" She leaned on the other side of the counter top, her eyes teasing you with their violet color.
"The demon one," You hissed while clenching your fists, "What kind of business did you do with him?"
"Oh dear, you know that's against my rules to spill private and classified information like that." She fiddled with a wand in her hands, gingerly twirling it inbetween her fingers as her gaze shifted to the wand. That was a sign that she wasn't going to give you what you wanted so easily.
"You better make it available to me before I expose this place to the base and have them take it down." You said with a more serious tone, never taking your eyes off of her as she seemed to flinch from your words.
"You wouldn't dare." Her head snapped to look at you once more, her fingers allowing to wand to cease it's actions.
"I would and I will," You straightened out your back some to seem more intemedating, even if she was taller than you, "I could tell them every little dirty secret about your place. Even the fact that you summon demons and work with them. They would take you down in a heart beat."
You watched as Rose clutched tightly onto her wand before setting it down on the counter top with a heavily annoyed sigh.
"Alright, fine." She huffed out, going towards the back and motioning for you to follow her.
You smirked a little bit behind her back from winning against her as she took you to the back of the shop. This is where she did her deals with the demons in this city and anyone who wished to summon one or even become one. It creeped you out that she would do such things, but it was even more awful to think of the people to actually want to do worse things. She just aids them, which, is still bad of course, but they would never find her out.
"It's been a while since I've seen Dirk, it's actually been a couple if years, however," You watched as she paused for a second, a devious smile coming onto her face, "I will never forget what wonderful things he allowed me to do to his katana."
The cuts on Jake's back.
That had to be what was causing the issues lately. It was probably some enchantment or poison, but either way, it was doing a heavy toll on Jake.
"What's the antidote for it?" You asked seriously as she hummed, letting her finger glide across the pages of her spell book.
"Let me guess, he hurt someone close to you?" Her eyes looked up at you through her lashes for a quick moment just to study your features as you tensed up from the question. A small chuckle came from her before looking back down.
"I knew it was Jake." She flipped through a few more pages before finding the correct one, scanning over it quickly before nodding in approval.
"Why did you do it? He could've attacked someone you cared about, like Kanaya." You pondered, a little hurt in all honesty that she would even do such a thing.
"I made sure that it wouldn't cause harm to anyone with supernatural aspects to them, so Kanaya would just get cut up. I would still kill him for harming her though." She shrugged before walking towards her potions and crafting area, pulling out herbs and odd ingredients you would've never imagined to see in your life.
"Your just luckily I still worry about Jake because I know he's a good guy," She sighed, turning on her boiler as she waited for the water to boil, "I didn't think he would ever use it on Jake, even if he was a demon. I thought in the back of Dirk's mind there would be something stopping him from harming you guys." She threw in some rosemary as she watched it boil down into the water.
"He hasn't seen any of us in a long time, I'm not surprised he's forgotten." You joined her sigh as well this time as you watched her work her magic.
It didn't take too long for her to finish, she was extremely good at her job afterall. She handed the potion to you with a small, more genuine smile and you couldn't help but smile back.
"Thank you." You wanted to hug her, but you knew that would be out of bounds. She has betrayed you so many times before, you wouldn't be surprised at this point if she pulled out a dagger and literally back stabbed you.
"Of course." She nodded before leading you out to the front desk again. The potion was kind if pricey, but if it worked, it worked. You didn't care how much it costed.
Before you left, she wrote down instructions on how to use it and how often to. You could already feel the weight being lifted off of your chest before you saved goodbye to her and headed back for the cabin.
Now things finally felt right.
--------------------------
You got so close to your car, so very close.
But some asshole demon with your ex demon girlfriend just had to block your path.
It wasn't the most favorable meeting in your eyes because for some reason you thought it was a good idea to run out when the sun was setting. Now it was dark out and demons were crawling around in the city, hunting for vunrable prey. You, for once, happened to be one of them.
Yet, you had a mission and the tiny potion that was clutched in your hand was it. Whatever happened, you couldn't let go of this potion.
Your eyes stayed glued and serious on the two of them while Dirk had already slashed a hole in one of your tires before you arrived. What an asshole.
"What do you want?" You grumbled as they both eyed you, starting to separate from standing side by side to circling you. Now it was hard to keep your eyes glued onto both of them, but you still held your ground not allowing a single sign of fear or weakness to slip out from you.
"To stop you." Jane hummed which sent an instant shiver down your spine. You haven't heard her voice since she passed away. It was enough to make you want to throw up from the overwhelming taunt of her voice. She sounded different, but yet the same. Her lovely ocean eyes were corrupted to an awful glowing red color.
It made you sick.
"We were in the shop when you told your sister everything." Dirk spoke while a small grin came across his lips. You could feel your heart sink while clutching a little tighter onto the potion bottle. If worst came to worst, you could fight them with your combat skills if needed.
"What do you even want from him?" You questioned while glaring straight at Dirk through those shades of his. You couldn't believe he still wore those crazy things.
"I just want him to be dead, he's just a pain in the ass," He huffed, looking down at his katana for a brief moment before glancing back at you, "I'm just surprised my spell hasn't killed him yet. He's the first one to last this long. Usually it only lasts for a day or so, but this prick has been going on for days and it's draining me."
You took note that he seemed annoyed. It was a weak point to hit later, especially if he was weaker.
"Plus, it's just one less hunter to worry about." Jane cued in as she stepped dangerously close to you, making you take a step back. You made sure to snarl at her as she kept stepping closer to you. You didn't think you could handle her any closer than she already was.
Your eyes rapidly scanned for a break to step away from the two of them enclosing on you. You couldn't let yourself end here, especially when Jake depends on you now.
"Back off, I'm serious." You hissed through your teeth at them. You made sure to step closer towards the rusted railing of the stairwell leading up to the top of the building beside you. If it was as weak as it looked, you could hopefully kick out a chunk of it and use it as a weapon to beat them with.
Your hand with the potion slipped the bottle into your jacket pocket as you zipped the pocket up just for security. You took in a deep breath as you stopped backing up, allowing Jane to get closer. As she did as you thought, you quickly launched your clenched fist towards her face. It was caught right before it hit her face by Dirk's hand.
You yanked your arm that was in his grip down far enough to grip onto his own wrist and using your other hand to grab onto the same arm. You quickly swung him towards Jane to make them collide. You had no time to watch them fall while you sprinted towards the rusted railing, kicking it hard a few times before yanking away the broken piece.
Your feet instantly started to kick up again as they sprinted towards the woods as your hand gripped tightly onto the chunk of pipe in your hand. You weren't about to lose another friend, even if the other two were trying to kill you.
You were a woman on a mission.
------------------------
Luckily you made it back to the cabin with no injuries or any more issues. You didn't even hear the two run after you, which could be a good or bad thing. It made you run that much faster because that could've meant that Jake was already dead.
You wouldn't allow that to be true though.
Although it could've been with the way John ran out to meet you with a panicked expression on his face, gripping onto your shoulders as his eyes looked wild. You gripped back onto his shoulders to ground him as you started straight into his eyes.
"John, deep breaths, take deep breaths so I can actually know what the issue is." You said as calmly as possible but your mind was running wild from extreme worry of the unwanted answer.
"I..It's Jake," He panted out as he seemed more grounded, but still horrified, "He just randomly walked into the kitchen, so we thought he was okay, but then he took out a knife and..oh god, Roxy, please, just, help us! I can't even get close to him and Dave already got cut! I can't even let Jade close to him!"
You were shocked from the answer you got, but it was better than him being dead. However, it sounded like he was almost being controlled by some type of puppet master.
You already knew why he was being controlled and who was doing it. He would be getting a good taste of your fist later. Right now, you had a rampid, sick man in the cabin to worry about.
You nodded and ran inside with John behind you. You unzipped your pocket before taking out the potion. Your eyes caught a glimpse of Jake looking extremely out of it and almost has a grayish tint to his skin. His eyes were open, but all you saw were the whites of his eyes. He looked absolutely dead, but yet he was moving. You had no more time to waste before it became too late. He was starting to charge towards a Jade hiding behind Dave's legs as Dave took a battle stance with his sword at the ready.
Jake was a mad man and you had to stop him.
Before you knew it, you were charging at him, quickly tackling him to the ground while he was focused on another target. Luckily it knocked the knife out of his hand, but he didn't seem like he wanted to give up the fight quite yet.
He started clawing at your face as words from foreign tongues were being spoken at rapid speed. He looked possessed, but you knew it was the spell. It was Dirk doing this to him and you couldn't allow this.
You gripped tightly onto his wrist with your free hand before taking out your potion, popping the top off with your thumb.
"Dave, John, pin him down to be laying down on his stomach so I can get to his wounds!" You shouted as Jake began to struggle more, growling at you like some kind of wild animal while his teeth snapped towards your neck. You made a quick motion to knee him in the stomach to stop him temporarily while Dave and John rushed over to help you.
They both held him down as instructed, but Jake did not make things easy as he tried to fight like some crazed man.
You quickly reached for the knife he cut before cutting open the back of Jake's shirt. You didn't have the time to slip his shirt up with the way he was thrashing around.
You almost threw up from the sight of the two wounds on his back, and you weren't the type of a person who was known to be queasy. You could see how infected they were, even looking black towards the beginnings of the cuts as it faded out into a deep purple. That color of purple was sourcing through the veins surrounding his injuries.
It looked disgusting.
You began to spread the potion onto the cuts as Jake began to thrash around more, screaming out in pain. He kept trying to buck you off of him, but thankfully for Dave and John, they didn't allow him to do that. You felt awful for Jake, you really did. It sounded extremely painful as the potion started to get absorbed into his skin.
His screams of pain began to become more humane as you could now see tears dropping onto the wooden floors. He looked like he was fighting something mentally as he squirmed around, trying to claw away something that wasn't even there as he kept screaming to get away.
Your heart pounded painfully from watching the scene happening because there was nothing you could do about it. All you could do was wait and watch as you held him down.
Even if it was a hard scene to watch, you could see the wounds gaining a normal coloring to it along with his skin. You could feel the pressure off of your chest as you slowly saw him calm down from his thrashing that resolved to soft sobs with some hiccuping here and there from the intensity of his breakdown.
Dave and John took it as a cue to stop holding him down as you also got off of his back, turning him onto his back once more as you watched him shudder and cry with a pained expression. He probably just came from death to here. At least, you were pretty sure of. He looked extremely dead when you first came in.
For the first time in almost a week, you saw his emerald eyes peer into the world once again while he squinted at the sudden light. His crying came to a stop as he was just shivering now. He kept muttering that he felt cold, so Jade hurried off to grab a blanket as an anxious Bec paced beside her.
You took the note out of your pocket from Rose and some of the side effects were chills, but also vomiting, bodily pain for a couple of days, and extreme headaches. Basically Jake was going to have a hangover for a few days before returning fully back.
You were just happy he was alive and wasn't under that hellish spell any longer. You took a mental note to somehow remove that spell from Dirk's katana before this happened again to Jake or even someone else, maybe even you.
When Jake was feeling better, you would defiently ask him exactly what was going on inside of his head while this spell happened so everyone could be prepared just in case.
Plus, if Dirk has an enchanted katana, who knows what kind of weapon Jane has.
For now, you chose not to think of such horrifying thoughts as the four of you surrounded Jake as you all did your best to comfort him while he processed what just happened.
It didn't take too long for Jake to crack some jokes even while feeling horrible which made everything seem right again.
Your friend was right again.
That's all you needed right now to be happy.

((Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed this chapter, I tried switching it up some with a different point of view and finally adding Rose into the story :,) I might mention a few trolls in this story like I did with Kanaya, but I'm still unsure if I want to involve them too much. Anyways, stay tuned for the next chapter and thank you once again for reading! 💖))
