Demon

The following weeks were rocky. The people of Arendelle were still quite shaken up at the idea of their ruler possessing ice powers, but in every situation, I tried to example my trustworthiness. Although it had been exhausting, with Anna by my side, I felt strengthened in a way I had never felt before.

That is, until I saw him.

I had been in my personal chambers, and I had been sorting through several invitations. As Queen of Arendelle, my presence was suddenly wanted at apparently every event in the nation. Christenings, weddings, the list was endless.

Other rulers might've hired a scribe to reply to the invitations, but I was determined to reply to them myself, in my own handwriting. My wrists and neck ached, and as I glanced at the massive pile of unopened letters, I considered the financials involved in hiring a scribe.

Disrupting my thoughts, the room's balcony doors suddenly blew open. Gales of icy wind shot through the doorway, and the heavy drapes billowed at the wind's touch. As the invitations went flying in a swirl of snow, I shot to my feet.

Fighting against the biting wind, I struggled over to the balcony doors. Shielding my eyes, I tried to close them, but failed as a new gust of air knocked me off my feet.

This was no ordinary early-winter gale. It was too strong, and there was something odd about it that I couldn't quite place my finger on.

I had been about to push myself to my feet and attempt to shut the doors again, but before I had the chance, the wind suddenly vanished, as if it had never been. The drapes stopped billowing and hung silently, completely still, and the chill had all but left the room.

For a moment, I wondered if I had made the whole incident up. That I had fallen asleep during my task and had somehow sleep walked over to the balcony and had yanked open the doors. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw the letters that were flung across the room.

Nope. This definitely was not a dream.

Turning my head, I gazed out the shadowed doorway, searching for the source of the violent winds. As I did, the familiar icy touch of fear slowly began to wrap it's fingers around my heart, for I had realized why the snow had felt different.

It wasn't the texture, or even the intricate shapes of the snowflakes that had stood out to me. No, it was the way the snowflakes had fallen. They had fallen in a way where their destination had been predetermined. They had swirled and danced in a way that had seemed less than natural.

Magic.

Pushing myself to my feet, I stared into the darkness looming outside the balcony doors. I didn't know what to expect, but I did know that what I was about to see would change everything I'd ever known. I was about to meet someone--or something--just like me.

Gathering my scattered courage, I forced myself to take a step out onto the balcony. Looking back, I should've called for guards, but at the time, guards were the furthest thing from my mind, for I had seen someone.

A boy, he was perched on the stone railing, and around his shoulders, he wore a dark cloak. In the moonlight, his white hair glowed unnaturally.

"Can you see me?" He asked, inclining his head towards me.

I fumbled for words. "Who-who are you?"

Turning around, he faced me. Although his face was shadowed, I could still see the light blue of his eyes and the crazed gleam that lingered there.

"Can you see me?" He asked again, slowly pronouncing each word.

"Yes!" I cried. "Yes, I can see you!"

"Excellent," he snapped and hopped off the railing. I noticed he has a shepherd's crook in his hand. "Now you're mine."

"What?" I stuttered, taking a quick step backwards.

"You heard me," he murmured as he strolled towards me, a psychotic grin on his face.

"What did I do to you?" I shouted. Around us, snow was beginning to fall. I couldn't conceal my fears any longer; my emotions were taking over.

"You don't know?" He asked and let out a series of guffaws. "You think this is some kind of joke?"

"No! I don't understand--"

"You killed me!" He screeched.

"What?"

"You made me into what I am!" He cried. "You made me fall through the ice. You took away my family. You took away my memories!"

"I didn't do any of that!" I exclaimed. "I don't even know you!"

He giggled. "You really don't know, do you?" Behind him, his cape flapped as the wind picked up. "I don't have any memories. It's like my mind is empty. The only thing I can remember--" he giggled again, "--is you.

"You froze this land. Because of you, I fell through the ice of a frozen lake. When I woke up, I was like this," he gestured to himself, "White haired, without memories, and alone, and it's all because of you." He pointed a crooked finger at me and took another step forward.

"Wait, please, let's talk about this," I pleaded, holding up my hands. "I'm sure we can figure it out--"

"I made a vow." He interrupted. "I vowed that I would see my family again. You're going to help me."

"And if I don't?" I asked, my voice shaking. There was no way that I was going to help this lunatic.

"If you don't, then I'm going to kill you, just like you killed me, and then you will know what it's like to be alone," he sneered.

My thoughts immediately flew to Anna. If I died, it wasn't so much that I would be alone as she would be. With our parents dead--I couldn't let her bury me too.

"In fact, I may just kill you right now," he snarled and lunged for me.

Before his long, white fingers had a chance to wrap around my neck, I struck out with my powers. From my hands shot bolts of ice that slammed into the boy's chest and sent him reeling.

Running back inside, I slammed the balcony doors and locked them. Too scared to look back, I ran out into the corridor.

"Guards!" I shrieked. "Help!"

In moments, armed men were flying down the hallway towards me. "What is it, my Queen?"

"There's a boy out on the balcony," I sputtered. "He tried to kill me."

Sharing a glance with each other, the guards charged into my room. Not wanting to chance seeing the boy again, I pressed my back against the wall and sank to the floor.

I heard the guards wrench open the balcony doors, and as they did, I vaguely heard the sound of approaching feet. At first, I thought that the boy had escaped the guards and had come for me, but glancing up, I saw that it was only my sister, Anna.

"Elsa, what's going on?" She asked. "I heard the noise and came running. Are you all right?"

"There was a boy..." I began. Curling up in a ball, I cradled my hands.

"My Queen," a guard addressed me, returning from my room. "There was no one on the balcony. Are you sure someone was there?"

I couldn't reply, I was shaking so much.

"We'll keep looking. Could you tell us what he looked like?" The guard asked.

"He-he had white hair and eyes as cold as ice. He wore a black cloak--I'm sorry, I can't remember anymore." I buried my face in my hands.

"Did he have a name?" He continued.

I remained silent.

"Please, Elsa," Anna whispered, touching my shoulder gently.

"Demon," I murmured, rocking back and forth. "Demon."
