14. In Which the New Dark Lord Rises
How do you make a monster?
Do you take what once was seen as a beacon of Light and rip it to shreds? Make everyone question what truly defines humanity? Mythas had searched for the answers to these questions after the fall of the Dark Lord, watching one monster be destroyed led him to his quest to create another.
You don't even need to create the monster, you let the people create it for you. Then, when what was once seen as Light has become black, whatever you suggest to stop the new monster, will seem like the out everyone wants. And Lester would be the hero.
Mythas watched as the flash of green light zapped Draco Malfoy in the chest. He'd told the Ministry that the Malfoy heir was dangerous enough to kill-on-sight. The Auror chosen to shoot the spell seemed frozen, hood falling off her face. Mythas tilted his head, watching as Harry Potter pointed his wand at the Auror. His face seemed to glow, his robes changing color, from dark purple to pure black. He kept his wand aimed at the Auror as he slowly bent down, a small string of white shooting from the tip of his wand to the chest of the witch who shot Malfoy.
Potter ran a hand through the platinum hair of Malfoy. "Draco?" he muttered, just barely loud enough for Mythas to hear.
The Malfoy didn't respond, laying limp in Harry's arms.
Potter looked at his lover with an expression Lester had never seen on anyone before. The pure brokenness in every pore of his face could shatter anyone's heart. Not Mythas' however, it was too late to turn back in the plan now. His monster was too far gone to save. A cruel smile graced his lips as he watched the one person tying Potter to sanity slip away from life.
The plan couldn't be stopped. Draco's unknowing sacrifice would be worth the glory Mythas would receive once he became the new Chosen One.
Potter stood slowly, entire body shaking. He glared at the woman who shot Draco. "You," his voice sounded like sandpaper, rasping. "You did this."
"I'm just following orders," the woman still couldn't move, Harry holding her in place.
Mythas watched Harry's eye twitched. "That's right," he paused, taking a shaky breath, "the Ministry did this."
His eyes glanced at the form of Draco. Harry let the woman drop, "And so the Ministry will pay."
And with that, Harry disappeared in a puff of black smoke.
-_-_-_-_-
Draco opened his eyes, his heart pounding a million beats a second, head throbbing. He groaned, rubbing his face and trying to make sense of the blurry world around him. "Ugh," he squeezed his eyes shut before opening them wide, trying to focus.
In front of him was a...a girl? He raised his hands, trying to focus on his fingers. After a moment, the world came into view. The girl sitting in front of him was none other than... "Granger?" his voice sounded dry and weak.
Hermione smiled at him, a sympathetic smile. "You're awake."
"Very astute," Draco wheezed, breaking into a brief fit of coughing, "observation."
"You were dead two minutes ago," she said flatly.
"What?" Draco half laughed, rubbing his pounding head. "I can't have been dead if I'm alive right now."
He shuttered, eyes rolling back into his head for a moment. Darkness surrounded him, green lights flashing like lightning. Pain shot through his entire body and he could vaguely hear himself screaming. Lightning seemed to electrocute his nerves, blood boiling, heart seeming to stop for a fraction of a second. Then he was back to reality.
Hermione was looking at him curiously, "You went out for a second there, you okay?"
"Well apparently, I just died so no, I'm not okay, Granger."
"Merlin," she threw up her hands, sitting back. "You obviously haven't changed. Look, I got your message, your Patronus, and I did a little investigating. It was a stag, by the way. Very intriguing. However, I think if it's the potion I think it is, we would have to find a trace of it in something in food or a drink or something."
"How do you know we'll find it there?" Draco tried to think through the fog in his brain.
"Where else would it be?"
Draco thought for a minute. Then a thought occurred to him. Who was always hovering around Harry? Who hated Harry? Who was always trying to sniff Draco out. "We need to go to his office, at the Ministry."
"The Ministry? What the hell is in the Ministry?"
"I bet Harry's daily cup of ridiculously sweet tea sitting on his desk full of a dark potion. Lester did this. No one else is insane enough or hates Harry enough."
Draco stood up, trying to focus through the foggy pain in his head. He eyed Hermione for a moment before fishing for Harry's broken wand. He waved it in the air in front of her face, "I need a new wand. Obviously this one is broken and has so much of Potter stinking it up, it messed up my patronus."
They both knew that it wasn't residue from Harry's magic that made Draco's patronus a stag, but neither said anything. Hermione just nodded and Draco tried not to think about that the few happy memories he had, all with Harry. Every happy moment in his life revolves around Harry.
Harry who was stubborn enough to take him in. Stubborn enough to deal with his nastiness. Harry who was too kind, somehow after everything. Harry who needed his help after spending his whole life helping others.
"Get me a wand, get me into the Ministry, and this arsehole bastard Lester will pay."
Hermione nodded sympathetically, "I'll Apparate us Diagon Alley, but we have to hurry. If this is the potion I think it is, then the more black magic he uses, the more it corrupts him."
"What potion is it?" Draco said as he grabbed onto Hermione's arm.
She didn't respond right away, raising her wand. Draco felt a rush through his stomach, a loud pop echoing through the room they had been in moments before. When the world returned, they were standing in a deserted Diagon Alley. Normally flooded streets were completely empty, shops abandoned. "Where did everyone go?" Draco said as they walked towards Ollivander's.
"They must of heard about Harry," she said worriedly.
"Well then," Draco smirked, "guess I'm getting a free wand." Before living on the Muggle streets, Draco spent massive amounts of money on luxuries he could no longer afford. Thanks to the Ministry deciding that some people were more deserving than others, and he wasn't one of them. The Malfoys' assets had been sealed to him for the time being, Gringotts having a watch out for Draco should he try and access his fortune, which Draco hadn't discovered until after living with Harry. Until his name was cleared, he was penniless.
Hermione didn't seem to agree but didn't say anything as they walked through the ghostly Alley. Draco looked at the shuttered doors of the wand shop and looked at Hermione, "Ladies first."
She rolled her eyes, walking forward, wand in hand. Hermione aimed it at the door, mouth half open when someone jumped out in front of the building. "WAIT!" Ollivander whisper-shouted.
