A Plague On Us All
I woke up and got ready for the day. I walked out of my room to see Friar Laurence walk to me.
"Eglantine, Juliet took the potion, the plan is working!"
"Good, she needs to be with Romeo."
"The lord and lady promised to marry her off to Count Paris, her cousin. Tis why according to them she slain herself."
"This is according to plan Friar!"
He patted me on the shoulders.
"Friar, I had a dream, I'm still weeping."
"Eglantine, dreams do mean things. Tell me my girl, come."
We walked to the alter where Romeo and Juliet were wed.
"I dreamt of Mercutio and Tybalt talking to me."
"Ah...go on."
"Mercutio said he missed me very much and said to rejoice."
"And Tybalt?"
"He apologized for how he treated me. Lord Capulet said Tybalt loved me, twas true!"
Friar Laurence's eyes widened.
"Tis a dream of forgiveness, I never dreamed of this before."
"What does it mean?"
"Thou heard me my girl, forgiveness and rejoice! We keep telling you're nor at fault. Do what the dream says, rejoice!"
He laughed and left, I ran after him.
"Friar?"
He turned around.
"Me and Benvolio are engaged to be married soon."
He smiled.
"I congratulate you Eglantine, tell me nigh and it will happen!"
I nodded as he walked away.
I went to the Capulet's. It was quiet, my understanding too quiet. The area of living sat Lord and Lady Capulet in mourning.
"Thy Lord and Lady, thine sincerest condolences."
They looked at me.
"Eglantine, tis a sad day, our Juliet, our beloved daughter has took her own life in her chambers. Oh the pain!" Lord Capulet said.
I sat across from them.
"Thy lordship, I feel terrible."
"Egg, tis what they call you, is it not?"
"Yes sir, twas Mercutio's idea, he said I hatched when I left home."
"Hatched like an egg?" Lady Capulet asked.
"Ahh," Lord Capulet said.
"Tis endearing once thought about, after the party the other night, I was nicknamed Egg."
"As I was going to say, Eglantine, no need to feel the way you feel for us. Tis very kind but no need. We will manage on our own."
"Suit yourself sir and madam. I want to say something else, some news, you may have hatred for me afterwards."
"By all means, speak your mind?"
"I am engaged to-."
"A Montague!?" Lady Capulet asked in rage.
We all stood up.
"How did you know?"
"Thy dress in dark clothing, colors of Montague. Who art thou engaged to?"
"...Benvolio."
"Why are you here with us if thou a Montague to be?"
"When I heard of the feud, I've been ambivalent, Tybalt kept making me choose between you two. Mercutio was the first person I met so, I became friends with him, his friends are Montague's, I met Benvolio and we fell in love."
"Ambivalent, why this word?" Lord Capulet asked.
"Thine feelings are mixed."
"Thine feelings are mixed,' ever since you came here there's been nothing but bloodshed!" Lady Capulet yelled
"Tis not my fault thy ladyship! It's both your houses!" I yelled.
They looked at me wide eyed.
"A plague on both your houses! Those were the last words of Mercutio, me and him both are ill of this feud! What started this feud!?"
"A grudge generations long," Lord Capulet said.
I obnoxiously huffed.
"A grudge that happened generations ago?"
He nodded.
"Whatever twas, it happened generations ago. There's at the very least one thing we all, as individuals, can't let go. But, two families, generations long feud, that one thing happed years ago. No offense, tis pathetic to see two large households bicker over something that was should've been resolved at the very start of it. When I arrived in Verona, I was welcomed by majority, especially you two, Juliet, the nurse. I would give to live my first day again, meeting new friends but no feud nor bloodshed. The ball was majestic, that night was when Benvolio and I fell in love. I was named a brave maiden by the boys after me and Tybalt dueled and I was victorious, before that ball. I feel I belong in fair Verona, I feel moved, the song at the ball, oh the song, twas lovely, stuck to my head for hours."
I walked around slowly.
"What is a youth? Impetuous fire. What is a maid? Ice and desire, the world wags on. A rose will bloom, it then will fade, so does a youth. So does the fairest maid," I sang.
I continued to talk.
"What is a youth, my lord and lady, answer me that?"
"A youth, a child at play, under guidance and care of their elders," Lord Capulet said.
"A youth should be a youth, Juliet was a youth, a twelve year old arranged to wed her cousin whom is an adult."
"How dare you! Who art thou to question tradition and beliefs? A youth thyself!" Lady Capulet asked.
"Tis the reason Juliet slew herself, if I wanted to blame, I blame both you."
Lady Capulet looked like she wanted to slay me.
"My Lord, lend me your sword?" Lady Capulet asked her husband.
"Darling, the prince said no fighting!"
"This wretched maiden is a plague on us all!"
She pointed at me then turned back to Lord Capulet.
"I don't care what the prince says, I believe this has to be done!"
"What art thou doing Lady Capulet?"
"I would like to duel you, swordsmaiden."
"You even know how to use a weapon?" I asked grinning.
She was madder than before.
"Give me your sword!"
He gave her his sword.
"Let's make haste to the courtyard-"
We were heading outside.
"Eglantine, my lady wife, please, I beg of you!"
"My lord, let us, and don't run off and tell the prince!"
We were in the courtyard.
"Are we going to kill each other or will this duel be more playful?" I asked as me and Lady Capulet were in the center.
"We shall see."
She pointed the sword at me.
"I thought we were going to be friends thy ladyship."
"Me too, until you wed a Montague."
"When this feuds ends, I hope as soon as possible, we can be friends with all of Verona."
She shook her head.
"The feud will continue for more generations to come."
"I'll put an end to it if it's the last thing I'll do, this has caused more deaths than it should."
I unsheathed my sword.
"I don't want to kill you my lady, with the best of my ability, I will not let us end up slain."
We realized some servants were watching us with frightened looks on their faces, the nurse and Peter were included.
"Those who go to the prince will be cut!" I yelled.
We got a little closer until the swords touched, we dueled. Lady Capulet did learn a bit of sword fighting but not good enough. We clanged in silence without harming our flesh and clothing for what seemed like a full hour but it was only two minutes. After some time had passed, we accidentally dropped both our swords in sync. As I was about to pick it up, she charged at me, we were wrestling on the ground. Sort of like Tybalt and Romeo's dirty fight in the square. We wrestled until I got closer to the nearest sword, I picked it up and cut her upper arm. I picked up my sword and tossed the other one to her.
"Art thou finished?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"Finished with a Montague...never."
"I'm not a Montague yet."
"But still."
"I know, Benvolio is a kind boy, the entire Montague household are kind. Me and Benvolio want nothing but peace in Verona! We should rejoice, rejoice I tell you! I had a dream last night, tis the most meaningful dream I have ever had in all my life."
"Why tell me about it!?"
"I dreamt of Tybalt, him and Mercutio's spirits visited me in my dream."
Lady Capulet froze.
"Their spirits."
"Yes, they said they met God and we spoke of forgiveness. Tybalt was kind to me for once in our acquaintanceship, he apologized for what he done yesterday. Lord Capulet, you were right, he did love me, Tybalt loved me, but I don't love him back. If I chose you over the Montagues, things would be so much different!"
Tears formed in my eyes.
"Mercutio and Tybalt would still be alive, and Romeo wouldn't have been exiled!"
I kneeled on the ground sobbing, my sword still in hand.
"Why did it have to be this way!?"
"It's too late Eglantine, I told you this before more than once."
She started to walk slowly towards me while I was still crying, sword still pointing. I looked up and saw her sword tip a few feet from my face. I got up quickly.
"Who won!?" Peter shouted.
"Nobody did! And thy lord and ladyship, the last words that was said before I woke was to go forth and rejoice."
I started walking, Lord Capulet ran to his wife and examined her bleeding arm.
"Keep the wound cleaned, she'll be fine my lord."
I left the Capulet home.
