"What do you want to do?" Jeremiah asked the next weekend when he went to pick her up. They had been seeing each other for almost three months and it was pure bliss.
"I don't know, sleep in. I like cuddling with you" Jenna said in the hopes of persuading him to drop whatever idea he had. She knew when he asked her something it was because he had already made plans.
"Jennifer we haven't gone on a real date yet. I love cuddling with you too but we need to do things couples do. Go on a date. Visit places together. Make memories."
"Okay. What should we do then?"
"Don't worry beautiful. I have everything planned out. All you have to do is just have fun."
"Too short. Change it" Jeremiah said an hour later. He'd said they would go out dancing and Jenna was dressed in a little mid thigh black dress that clung to her body like glue. She had changed three times but Jeremiah kept coming up with excuses.
"Do you want to go out or should we just stay inside?" she asked feeling exasperated.
"Of course I wanna go out. This was my idea in the first place"
"Let's go then. And stop whining" Jenna said walking towards the lift.
"But...."
"No buts Jeremy. We either go or stay."
"Fine." he dragged himself stopping at the table by the lift and picked up his car keys. In the elevator he kept trying to pull her dress down and Jenna kept slapping his hands away.
"Seriously stop. You're starting to irritate me"
"It's just your legs are full on display. Everyone is going to stare at them." he said his hands still twitching to pull on her dress.
"What? Now you don't like my legs?" Jenna asked advancing on him. Maybe a little distraction would get him to leave her dress alone. She pressed herself against him and wound her hands around his neck. "Tell me"
"Wh-what?"
"My legs." she whispered in his ears. Jeremiah couldn't really think about anything. He forgot his name and wondered why they were even going out. Jenna ran her hands from his shoulders to his palms then pulled him out. He realised the lift was already on the ground floor and the doors were wide open.
"Clever. Very clever" he said catching on to what she was doing.
"I don't know what you're talking about" she preceded him and swung her hips in a sensual way that drove all his blood to his groin.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about." Jeremiah caught up with her and slammed the passenger door she was opening close then pressed her against it. "You win" he whispered biting her ear lobe. Turning her around he mashed his lips with hers non too gently. "Let's not go" he murmured placing little bites and licks on her lips.
"Nope. Nuh uh. We are" kiss "going" kiss "out" shove. "Now drive. And if you're a good boy I might reward you later." she left him standing there and got in the car. It took him a few seconds to come back to his senses then shaking his head he got in.
The first club they went to was quiet. Kind of like a place Jeremiah would go to relax with his friends. It was high class with sofas and no dance floor. Jenna looked around and decided it wouldn't do. So she dragged him out and gave him directions to the kind of place they needed to be. There was a short line outside but Jeremiah couldn't stop complaining "It's all part of the fun." she said forcing him to stay put. When it was finally their turn, they had to push themselves through the throng of people inside to actually get to the bar.
A table opened up and Jenna jumped towards it telling Jeremiah to go and order drinks. He didn't understand why they had to go to such a crowded place when his choice was so much better. He'd seen outside of these clubs but he wouldn't be caught dead inside. Even in his college days no one had persuaded him enough to step foot in such a place. The place smelled of beer, cigarettes and sweat. The things I will do for you. He told himself sighing and shaking his head. He'd fallen fast and hard for Jenna and to think the lengths he would go for her just to make her happy. It scared him. No woman had ever made him feel that way. He turned his head and looked to where she had found a table then felt his anger rising.
"Hi there. Is this seat taken?" a voice asked in a near shout. The music was blaring through the speakers and one had to shout in order to be heard.
"Yeah it is. Sorry" Jenna said and looked up at the guy. He was cute. Jeremiah was hot. This guy was cute in a boyish kind of way and she found herself thinking that before she had met Jeremiah, this was her type. Cute college-y guys.
"Okay I'll just warm it up for the owner then." he replied winking then sat down not waiting for her answer. "My name's Benjamin but my friends call me Benny. What's your name pretty lady"
God he was so lame. "Jenna."
"So can I call you Jenny? You look like a Jenny."
"No actually I like Jenna just fine. Now please would you leave. My boyfriend left to get us some drinks and he's going to be mad that you're even here. He's kind of possessive" She whisper yelled the last part.
"You like possessive? I can be possessive mama. Anything you want." he said attempting to caress her cheek and when Jenna turned her face out of his reach, he settled for holding her hand on the table. She didn't see Jeremiah coming. She just saw two glasses being slammed on the table.
"If I were you I would get your hands off my girlfriend before I make your fingers bend in ways you didn't even know they could." His voice was cold. Steel. If Jenna hadn't been sure that the voice was for that guy alone, she would have been really scared.
"Are you challenging me?" Benjamin/Benny asked and she wondered if the guy was stupid. Clearly Jeremiah was taller, more broader than him. Add his cold voice and dark eyes, he looked lethal but Benjamin was too stupid to see that. Or maybe it was the alcohol she had smelled on his breath that made him fearless.
"No. I'm just stating facts here. Leave please"
"Or what? You'll drag me out of here by my hair? I'd like to see you try"
"Benjamin.....Benny please just leave. This is my boyfriend and I don't want any trouble" Jenna intervened.
"Baby relax. You like possessive? I'll give you just th...." Benny didn't finish what he was going to say. Jeremiah punched him so had his face snapped to the side. Jenna could have sworn she heard the sound of bone crunching over the loud music. She gasped and it took Benny a few seconds before he got up pushing the round table and sending their drinks to the floor.
From there things went downhill fast. Benny tried to get in one punch but Jeremiah was like a possessed fighter. He was real mad throwing one after another and he didn't miss. By the time the bouncers got there Benny was a bloody mess and Jeremiah's knuckles were cut open. Jenna was screaming not knowing what to do. Jeremiah took his eyes off Benny to see if Jenna was okay, and therefore didn't see Benny's attempt to redeem himself. He didn't break his nose but he did do a bit of damage. The bouncer carried them both outside with Jenna on their heels.
"Really Jeremy?" She asked him when they were outside on the street.
"He called you baby. In front of me." He said deadpanned.
"Have you ever heard of being the 'bigger person'?"
"Yeah. And I will break his face again if he comes anywhere near you."
"Let's just go home. This night has been a disaster"
"Jennifer I won't apologize for protecting what's mine." Jeremiah told her but that was the wrong thing to say because she turned to him all angry.
"I am not your property Jeremy. I can defend myself. Besides Benny was just a stupid drunk. You could have ignored him and trusted me to get him to leave"
"Oh Benny? Now you even know his name? Did he tell you where he lives? His family history? What? You like him now?"
"You're being an asshole." Jenna told him walking to the car ahead of him.
"Jennifer"
"Let's just go home."
The drive home was quiet. Jenna kept thinking that if Jeremiah thought of her as his property then she had been fooling herself. She was grateful that he was trying to defend her but there was no need. It's not like Benny was a threat to her. She could have handled him. Unless he didn't trust her like he said he did. And if that was the case then what was she doing? She had practically left her house and moved in with him. All she needed was to terminate her lease and she'd be homeless. Jenna what are you doing? She asked herself. This was crazy. Everything was going too fast for her. They'd been dating for four months now and she felt like she wouldn't survive if he happened to change his mind and walk away from her. In such a short time he had become her lifeline and if he severed it then she would die.
She looked out the window at the buildings they passed and sighed. Life was always hard for her. Taking away things before she even had the chance to really enjoy them. Her father left before she even knew of her existence. Surprisingly that bothered her but not as much as her mom's departure did. She knew her, grew up knowing she was the one person that would stick with her to the end. Her father was an unknown entity. Something can't hurt you if you don't know about it. And now Jeremy didn't trust her. When would she get her happy ending? The car stopped and she realised they were at his apartment's underground parking lot.
"Jennifer" Jeremiah said stopping her from leaving the car. "I'm sorry"
"I know" she left him sitting there. He caught up with her when the elevator doors opened and they went up silently. They entered the apartment quietly but Jeremiah grabbed her and flattened her back on the wall.
"Marry me" he growled
"Jeremy" she couldn't do this right now. All she wanted to do was curl up in bed and sleep
"No I mean it. Right now. Let's go get married." that stopped her short.
"What?"
"Let's go Jennifer. I want you to be my wife, you know that. So what are we waiting for?" he had seen her withdraw. She was having doubts about him and he would be damned if he let her do so.
"It's past midnight. And I'm tired. Besides the registry is closed and I haven't even met your family yet." was he crazy?
"There's no rush. I'm sure my family will love you. Right now all I want to do is make you my wife. Say the words and I'll call my pilot to take us to Vegas. Just say yes baby"
"Jeremy what's gotten into you?"
"You. You're the one who's gotten into me. You're in my blood Jennifer and I can't give you the chance to have second thoughts about us. I can read you and I see all the doubts going through your head. I can't let you convince yourself that am not enough. Jennifer I love you so much and I don't think I can breathe without you. That sounds cliche but it's true. I love you so much that it physically hurts me to think you could leave. That you could stop loving me. So let's get married and the rest we'll sort out later. Please baby. I need you"
"Jeremy....." her heart was stuck in her throat
"Say yes please. Say yes" he kept chanting.
"Yes" she whispered. He'd made it clear from the beginning that he wanted to marry her. You're it for me. He had said that first night he had brought her to his apartment. And he was it for her.
When he'd said he loved her so much that sometimes it physically hurt, she had understood him. She did love him and nothing else mattered. There was so much they still didn't know about each other but that was what marriage was for. She would get to know him little by little for the rest of their lives. That's why people got together. To know each other. It would be a lie if she said she knew everything about him. She hadn't even met his family yet and maybe it was for the best. So that if they didn't like her then they would have to suck it up and deal with it because she would be his wife then. Not a girlfriend they can convince him to leave.
Jeremy was on his phone the second she said yes. He was calling his secretary and pilot and people she didn't even know. It was midnight but for a man like him, with his resources, all he had to do was say 'jump' and people would ask 'how high' no questions asked. That man was going to be her husband in just a few hours. That man was desperate to marry her. So much so that he was firing rapid orders into his phone to ready everything at 1am in the morning. She stood where he left her frozen trying to find one reason to not marry him. He was kind, generous, gentle, patient. They still hadn't had sex yet. He had told her they would take it slow and he would show her what it meant to make love. He understood she hadn't given herself to anyone ever since she was abused, and he was patient enough to wait until she was ready.
Jenna hadn't had that many boyfriends because they all wanted sex in the end. What man would date her and expect no intimacy? Jeremy. Her mind whispered. He was that man that was willing to wait. The rest asked for blow jobs or hand jobs if they couldn't get the real thing. She was lucky to have met Jeremiah when she did. Otherwise she would have given up on finding someone to spend the rest of her life with. He was hers and finally, finally she was going to have the family she had craved all her life.
"Jennifer snap out of it and pack a bag or I will carry you there myself without caring whether you're dressed or naked." he told her dragging her to the bedroom. He was still on his phone talking/yelling at whoever was on the other end.
Jenna realized she didn't have a wedding dress or something that would pass as one. She told him and he said he didn't care. She could wear a sack and he would still marry her. She packed a few dresses and toiletries then grabbed another suitcase and started packing for him. "We leave in two hours. Apparently the plane needs to be serviced before we take off." he told her twenty minutes later. She had finished packing and she was now lying on top of the bed looking up at the ceiling. "What are you thinking about?" he threw himself beside her.
"Nothing. I'm trying to clear my mind of any negative thoughts. I feel like I should find some reason to stop this" he wasn't surprised. He wound his hands around her bringing her on top of him. She had changed to a pair of jeans and a tank top. Her hair created a curtain on them while he kissed her. A slow and sensual kiss that conveyed just how much he wanted her. He poured all his emotions into that kiss but love was the most evident.
"I love you. And if I have to kiss you for the next one and a half hour just to keep you from changing your mind then so be it.
"I love you too. So much." she said and they spent the rest of the time in silence with a few kisses here and there.
