Chapter 3
Daring's POV
My alarm clock woke me up with a dragon roar. I jumped out of bed. Dragon roars really get my adrenaline going, which it needs to be. The damsels aren't going to save themselves! Now, while the dragon roar gets me stimulated, it freaks out Hopper. Every single morning he turns into a frog. Man up!
"Daring, you know that freaks the everything out of me!!! Stop it!!" I smiled.
"My good man, you must understand that this is important for me! I must be alert and ready to help damsels!" But honestly I just keep up this Charming act only for my reputation. My dad puts so much pressure on me to be just like him and all the other Charmings before. Sometimes I wish that he'd lay back a little bit and let me express who I really want to be, sure I'll still be a gentleman but I want to show my true feelings. Only two people actually get me, my brother Dexter and Lizzie. I might rebel but it could ruin the stories of those I really care about. So the name Daring doesn't really suit me sometimes, but only when I try to do the best for others.
I know it's bad to care about what other people think about you, but I can't help myself because Cedar says she thinks I'm conceited. It's my dad that specifically said that a Charming has to look charming all the time to make damsels in distress not as afraid. Hex the reason why I always look at myself in the mirror. It's hard not to when you're just following orders to be a good Prince. All I want to do is make my dad proud, he doesn't seem to appreciate the rest of the things I've done. Like when Ever After wins a book ball game, all he does is say what I've done wrong and doesn't congratulate me. So much for spending weeks practicing trying to impress him. He congratulates Dexter for getting good grades and accomplishments, so why not me? I'm not jealous of him, I just want dad to do those simple things. Speaking of simple things, I need to hext Lizzie and ask her out on our 5th official date at the movies. And by simple I mean extremely pressuring. I mean like, what if she says no?
----Bookend Theater at 7:00 2night? Rom-Com sound good to u? ~D
After about a minute she replied.
----Sure, ❤️ u for remembering r 5th date!!! ~L
Yes! I can't wait to spend more time with Lizzie. She's actually really sweet and nice. Once you get to know her, she doesn't seem like the same person who yells "OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!" all the time. She's misunderstood, kinda like me. So we get each other and I like that about us. At first she was worried that I would break her heart, but I wasn't a heartbreaker. It made me sad that she didn't really trust me. So we got to know each other better and I guess it just sort of happened. Like, Bam! We like each other. Lizzie is one of the only people I'm not afraid to give up the Charming, conceited thing. I don't even act that way around Apple. One reason why I would choose Lizzie over Apple if I could without hurting anybody's feelings.
Now, the thing with Cerise. No, I do not like her. I know I danced with her over Lizzie at Thronecoming, but that was only to thank her for winning the bookball game for our team. Plus, I didn't really enjoy it. She kept in stepping on my feet while dancing. She's pretty, but almost all the girls in the school are. However, I like Lizzie and only Lizzie for forever after.
"Are you ready to go, Hopper?" I asked. It's important for an athletic prince such as myself to get a good breakfast.
"Uh...well..." I turned around to see a moving pile of clothes. I sighed.
"What happened?"
"I saw a spider in my coat pocket, which scared me and then I turned into a frog." The only time Hopper doesn't stutter is when he's a frog. I helped Hopper out of the clothes, then killed the spider.
"Well, I'm gonna go."
"Wait! Young prince, I can be trampled by those who do not care to look down. For only a lady willing to help me, I can transform back to my original form."
"You know, you're a frog the majority of the time. I think your 'original form' might just be a frog. Right buddy?" I turn around to see Hopper staring angrily at me. I just chuckle. Joking around with Hopper is pretty fun.
"All right. C'mere, let's go find a girl." I put him on my shoulder and we walked out the door. 'This shouldn't be hard,' I thought to myself. Because I inherited the good looks of my father, and my teeth happen to be ranked the 2nd most whitest in the world, girls will literally fall for me. Literally, as soon as I left the door, I met my younger sister, Darling with her friend Rosabella.
"Darling? Can I ask a favor?" I said, flashing my best smile.
"Ok, ok. Quit it with the teeth. I don't need a tan. You know Mom will be angry if you ruin my fair skin. What do you want?" She tapped her foot impatiently. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I pointed to Hopper.
"Oh." She held out her hands for Hopper to jump into. He landed and Darling leaned over to kiss him. As soon as she did, she dropped Hopper so he could grow back into a human.
"Okay...done. Bye!" She said with a wave of her hand.
"Thanks Daring." Hopper said as he also ran off to the castleteria. The air smelled of hot cross buns, one of Ginger's specialties. I started walking off. I stopped by my locker to grab some books. Down the hallway I could see Apple. I hid my face, hoping she wouldn't notice me. We were supposed to have an outing tonight, but I accidentally bought tickets for a movie that was showing tonight so I have to cancel to go on my date with Lizzie. The Bookend Theater is one of those NO REFUNDS theaters, so I have to break the news to Apple.
And it's kind of awkward when I hang out with Apple because she calls them dates. But they're not dates, we're just friends. Although I have to pretend they're dates so my relationship with Lizzie doesn't get exposed. And that is the hardest part, especially trying to flirt with Apple. It makes me feel like I'm betraying my one true love, Lizzie. I'm just glad Lizzie understands my situation with Apple and won't become jealous. It's not that I don't like Apple, I just don't like her as if I'm in love with her. I guess we never really had that spark and feel for each other. That, or it's just a one way love thing.
Honestly, ever since Lizzie and I have started dating, I've been trying to get Apple not to want me as her prince anymore. I would cancel dates and act more conceited than ever. I'm not doing this to be a jerk, I just want to give her hints that I'm not interested that much in a nice way instead of turning her down directly. However, it's my destiny and my parents would go as far as disowning me if I didn't follow it. I come from a looooong line of Royals. I was distracted from my thoughts by Apple's musical voice.
"Hi honey! You ready for our date tonight?!" I gulped, then turned around to face her. Her bright blue eyes beamed up at me.
"Oh....h-hey Apple. Look, I'm so sorry, but something..uh..came up and I'm too busy tonight. Can we do Saturday instead?" Luckily, Lizzie wasn't around. Otherwise, she might have thought I was cheating on her. I worried about Apple's reply. She can be kind of dramatic, and we haven't gone on a "date" in a fairy long time.
"Sure! That totally works! Love you!" I was immensely relieved. No water works, no worry. She skipped off brightly. Oh man...I forgot about those hot cross buns! I ran off to the castleteria. As I was walking, I saw Dexter and Raven run into each other. Dex is my younger brother and twins with my sister Darling. As they fell over, his books and glasses went flying. Raven caught them. Dexter was blushing madly.
'He's probably embarrassed.' I thought to myself. Dex is too concerned about figuring out his destiny to disobey it. Thinking nothing of it, I quickened my step on my path to the castleteria so I could snatch my spot across from Lizzie.

Dexter's POV
I stepped up to the podium. My face glowed on the jumbo mirrors. I looked behind me in the line. Raven was up next. She glanced at me nervously, her purple eyes wide with fright. I looked away and instead gazed at the crowd. So many people were watching me. With a deep breath, I said the familiar lines I had practiced so many times.
"I am Dexterous Charming, son of King Charming, and I am ready to pledge my destiny!" The key appeared. It was gold with sapphires, beaming with magic. I reached out to grab it, my hand shaking. I would finally find out my destiny! After years of waiting, it would be revealed. I slid the key into the Storybook of Legends and turned it. The resonating click was almost as beautiful as Raven's smile. But what happened next was amazing.
The storybook showed me my life in the future, a sort of flash-forward. It was actually pretty wonderful. Raven became the Evil Queen and married me! My destiny was to be the Good King in the Snow White story! Even though it showed Raven ignoring me and looking down on my goodness, I still hoped. Raven wasn't all that bad!
And that was when I woke up.
I've been having this dream for a while. The two things I want most in life, to find my destiny and to ask out Raven, come and haunt me. I may never find those things anyways. Raven doesn't seem interested and because we can't find the real Storybook, I might not be able to discover my real destiny. Having the Good King as a destiny is probably too hopeful, huh? I groped around for my glasses and then put them on. With a sigh, I climbed out of bed.
Hunter was already awake, giving Pesky some nuts.
"Hey Dexter." He smiled. Hunter was already dressed in forest green camo with a brown leather hoodie. I waved. Hunter got up almost as early as the princesses so he could go on a run in the forest.
I trudged my way to my closet and picked out an outfit. I could hear Hunter let Pesky out the window. By the time I was dressed, Hunter was gathering up his books.
"Hey Dex, I'm gonna go, ok?" I nodded to let him know it was alright, and he dashed out the door. He probably had some early morning rendezvous with Ashlynn and I wasn't going to let him be late for that. I'm pretty sure he would behave the same way if I was him and Raven was Ashlynn. But that probably won't happen.
Shoving a crown on my head, I gathered my books and left the dorm. The boys side and girls side were separate, with the main part of the school smack dab in the middle. That way, the walk to class wasn't so long, but if a guy wanted to get to the girls dorm, it was a pretty long walk. I ran into my sister, Darling, on the way to the castleteria. She was walking with Roseabella Beauty.
"Hi Dexter!" She waved before continuing to chat with the yellow-clad princess. I waved back. The smell of hot cross buns was so prominent, you could practically taste them. Luckily, my dorm was one of the closest to the main part of the school, so I could probably be one of the first to taste Ginger's treats.
I was right outside the castleteria entrance when someone ran into me. My glasses flew off, but I could still barely make out the person. It was a girl with black hair. She dove to catch my glasses, and then handed to me. It was only when I put them on that I realized who had run into me. Raven Queen. I probably started blushing madly, and Raven was too. Probably just from embarrassment though.
"Here you go...sorry," she smiled weakly.
"Oh...uh...its..o-okay..uh..Raven," I gave her her hextbooks. Darn it! Why do I always have to fumble over my words?!
"Oh, you didn't have to pick them up...here, let me help you with yours." I inwardly sighed. Why don't people understand that I'm just trying to be the prince I'll have to be one day?!
"Well, I'm a Charming and I have all this damsel in distress stuff that I'm supposed to live up to...so..."I tried to explain, but ended up tripping over my sentences. Raven smiled at me.
"Isn't that more of Daring's thing?" I frowned a little. Of course, everyone compares me to Daring. I stood up and held out my hand so she could get up.
"Uh...well, I guess..." I replied. Her hand fit almost perfectly in mine. I blushed. I never knew that I would even be able to hold her hand. If I never asked out Raven, or if she never accepted, at least I could remember this.
"Thanks! Hey, did you know that Ginger made hot cross buns for breakfast?! Let's go get one before they're all gone!" I smiled at her. We ran off, her purple skirt swishing a little. We arrived at the castleteria. One look around and we could tell we had missed it.
"Oh hex! We missed them! I guess we should just go get something! Bye!" She walked off. Her hair swayed as she walked. I took in every detail. She really was the fairest one of all, not Apple.
Suddenly, she turned around and noticed me. I blushed and quickly looked away. Awkward! She probably thinks I'm a creep now, I thought. I'll never be able to ask her out.
I trudged slowly to the breakfast line and got some food, then trudged equally as slowly to the 'other guys' table. That's where all the guys who are not royal by birth sit, despite whether or not they were rebels or royals. I sat down beside Patrick Pan, a Royal in a situation similar to Hunter and Ashlynn's. He was currently dating Jamie Hook, the daughter of Captain Hook and his sworn nemesis. I had about 10 minutes to eat before the bell rang to start the first passing period.
My first class is Archery, which I've never really understood. Does it have something to do with my destiny? But then again, I don't know my destiny! Does Headmaster Grimm know something I don't?!
When I got to archery class, Mr. Gingerbread had an announcement.
"Okay students, today we are going to have a little contest."
From next to me, I heard Hunter shout a little "yes!" Somewhere in the crowd, Sparrow sang "yeeeeeeeeessss!!!"
"The person who can hit the target right in the center wins." I gulped. I am fairy bad at archery. Not my top class. I turned around and saw Cupid looking at me. Eventually, I looked away to focus on Mr. G.
But apparently, Cupid got lost staring into space. The next thing I know, Mr. Gingerbreadman shouted "Cupid!" I turned around to look back at her again. She was blushing.
"Uh...sorry..Mr. G..." She said weakly.
The cookie teacher nodded. "Alright then. Line up, we only have a half hour left." We jumped into a line. Daring was first, then me. Foxy was behind me.
Daring stepped up to shoot at the target. His golden arrows glistened in the sunlight. Now, I know for certain that Daring won't need to shoot anything in his story, because they just give the Evil Queen magic shoes that dance her to death. Although, I think that changed over the years. I really don't pay a whole lot of attention to Daring's destiny.
He let go of the arrow with determined confidence. It sped towards the target and hit the ring right outside the middle. He threw a small fit and walked over to a bench.
I was up next. I felt my brow start to sweat. I knew I wouldn't hit the middle. I have never been that great at archery, and I especially failed when the target was more than a foot away. This one was about a half mile away! Even so, I couldn't hold up the line that long, or some of the students, the Lost Kids especially, would start jeering at me. I shakily shot the arrow, and it hit one of the outer rings. Nowhere even close to the center!
From behind me, I heard Sparrow strum his guitar and sing, "You miiiiiissed it!!!!!" I looked down. I really wanted to say, "Yeah, I suck. But I WON'T EVEN NEED IT IN MY DESTINY! WHAT PRINCE DESTINY DO YOU KNOW OF THAT NEEDS AN ARCHER?! PLUS," and I would walk right up so I was in his face, "I THINK I GET BETTER GRADES THAN YOU IN EVERY OTHER CLASS EXCEPT THIS ONE!!! SO CLEARLY, I'M THE BEST HERE!!!!" Ok, so I'm not the best at comebacks, but even if I was, I wouldn't have gone up to Sparrow and shouted in his face. I'm not that type of person. People see me as the shy, smart brother of Daring, and I guess I'm okay with that. As long as "people" isn't Raven.
"Leave him alone!" I heard someone shout. I turned around to see that that it was Cupid who had shouted. Cupid really is a nice girl. She's been there to help me with trying to talk to Raven, and has just been helpful as a whole. I smiled at her. We were really good friends after all.
Foxy Lost was next in our competition. I watched from the end of the line as she shot the target dead center. She jumped up in the air with a triumphant grin on her face.
"Well, we have a winner!" Mr. Gingerbreadman announced to the crowd. Some girls started cheering.
Mr. Gingerbreadman then told us to go back to school. That contest seemed a little unfair. Only three people got to go! I noticed Cupid in the distance, practically skipping back to the building. I decided to go thank her. So, I walked up behind her and tapped her shoulder. She turned around, her face very red. Maybe then eat was getting to her?
"Are you too hot?" I fanned her a little with my hand.
"Oh...I'm...I'm fine." She stuttered. I looked at her
"Great. Look, I just wanted to say thanks for what you said. I guess I just suck at archery..."
"Dexter,"She looked me in the eyes, sounding serious but still friendly. "Stop comparing yourself to Daring. You are perfect the way you are. I don't think Daring could be half as smart as you. Plus, you're pretty good at basketball!" I smiled warmly. Cupid was so encouraging.
"Thanks Cupid, you're awesome." We had reached to school. As I left, I noticed that Cupid's face was still as red as Apple's lips. " Bye! Oh, and drink something cold. You still look really flushed!" I shouted behind my back.
