Cousins
Virgil sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as he failed to teach Patton how to wear the grey cardigan. "Honestly, Pat, that isn't how you're supposed to wear them."
"Well, kiddo, you told me they go around my shoulders!" Quipped Patton, loving his new accessory. "So this feels about right!"
"Yeah, but cardigans aren't capes!" Virgil complained. "No one wears capes anymore, Patton, you'll look funny!" He reached out to change it but Patton gasped, jumping back.
"No, Virgie! I like it!" Whined Patton, clinging to the cardigan.
Virgil sighed, stepping back. "Fine, Pat... Fine..." Virgil sat down on the spare bed with a small stretch and a long sigh. "I'm sorry I got in a fight with Roman and I'm sorry for scaring Thomas and Joan. I was just in a bad mood."
Patton smiled fondly, sitting next to Virgil to look down at his cousin. "It's okay, Virgil. Roman is very aggressive when fighting - that comes from his father - so I'm sure he just got carried away. Besides, you were in a bad mood when Thomas and Joan got scared. I'm sure they're over it now."
"I hope so," Murmured Virgil, knotting his hands together behind his neck, "I never really meant to scare anyone. Just creep them out." He let out another long sigh, that rattled with slight nerves. "I hope Thomas and Joan don't hate me now. I'll probably need to fix the bedroom."
Patton laughed slightly and it made Virgil lose his tension. The later curled towards his cousin like a cat, placing his head on his lap with a tiny yawn.
"Aw, you're like a kitten!" Patton gasped affectionately, petting Virgil's' head. The two cousins had done this long before, back a few hundreds of years and long before Patton had become friends with Logan and Roman. Back to when the two were inseparable until one found friends and the other was left behind.
Virgil hissed slightly but it wasn't threatening at all. "Don't you dare tell anyone that I am letting you do this. Or I'll run away."
"I won't tell, just don't run away!" Exclaimed Patton with a laugh. The two lay there in silence, Patton petting Virgil softly.
Then Virgil spoke up, "I never realised how much I missed this..."
"Yeah." Mumbled Patton, eyes falling to his cousin briefly.
"Could we just... stay like this for a while?" Virgil asked, with a sleepy pause - Patton doubted he got much sleep the night before.
"Sure thing, Virgie..." Patton promised. He felt Virgil smile softly and memories came pouring back to him. He had missed Virgil when he first began to hang out with Logan and Roman. None of them was as quiet and fun as his cousin, so Patton always saw Virgil at the end of the day. Then that stopped after his first sleepover with his new friends. And Virgil had waited for Patton to come find him. Patton hadn't given him a thought until a week later.
By the time Patton had rushed to his cousin's' favourite waiting spot, he found Virgil curled up with tear stains down his cheeks. Patton had felt so awful that the guilt made him run as far away as he could and he had run to Logan and Roman. Even now, they didn't know why Patton had turned up in tears.
So the cousins stopped playing together. Virgil found friends in the dead spirits that flocked to him and Patton became a bubbly, popular icon for other godly children. They hadn't spoken to each other until two months ago, at a dinner party. Patton had promised Virgil he'd bring him to hang out with his friends.
Look where they were now.
Patton hadn't noticed he'd started to cry but, when he had, the tears became more rapid as he cuddled his sleeping cousin closer. He spluttered for air in between the torrent of tears, sniffing and snivelling.
"Patton?" It was Thomas, standing outside the door awkwardly. The young god just cried harder, cradling Virgil in his arms.
Thomas rushed over, his eyes confused but his face sympathetic. He wrapped his arms around Patton, letting the god cry into his shoulder.
"I-I- haven't t-t-t-talk-ed to hi-him in c-c-cent-uries!" Patton hiccupped his way through the sentence, shuddering at every shaky breath.
Patting Patton on the back, Thomas soothingly whispered, "It's okay, Patton, it'll be okay. Just keep breathing, it'll be fine."
Now all three of them were laying in silence, one asleep, one in tears and one perplexed. Thomas cleared his throat. "I like your cardigan."
"I have a cape..." Mumbled Patton.
