Chapter Seventeen : Midnight
It was the last night... Wynne pinned up a curl and frowned at her reflection in the mirror. She wasn't even sure Erik would come tonight. Not after the fight they'd had yesterday.
"Why are you so pouty?! It's Christmas!" Meg smiled.
"I'm just... My... sister will be taking me home today Meg." Wynne replied looking at Meg in the mirror. "Is that mistletoe in your hair?"
"Well yeah I really want a Christmas kiss... What do you mean you're leaving? Did you tell my mum? How can you leave us in the lurch like this!"
"I already told your mother..." Wynne replied.
"Well, were you planning on telling me?!" MEg asked in a hurt tone.
"I just did!" Wynne argued.
"I thought we were friends!" Meg challenged.
"We are Meg!" Wynne insisted.
Meg blinked back tears, and ran from the room.
"MEG!" Wynne called.
Wynne sighed, and patted some rouge onto her cheeks.
"Well." She said standing and smoothing out her dress. "That's as good as it's going to get."
She left the Prima Donna room with a wistful sigh, and stopped in the doorway as a last goodbye.
Her eyes flickered to the mirror and she sighed heavily.
"Erik you damn well better say goodbye." She hissed, blinking back tears.
She made her way to the grand foyer, and glanced at the Ballerinas gathered around the tree. They were all looking excitedly for their gifts.
The clock on the wall in the ballroom chimed a happy ten o' clock as Wynne walked into the room.
Once again she found herself gravitating towards the food table. Just as she did the night she arrived there.
She chuckled sadly at the irony.
Wynne grabbed a slice of cake, and picked at it as she sat in a chair in the corner.
She sat and stared sadly at the cake.
"What, have you finally realized that your stardom has been short lived?" Soreli's catty voice sliced like a knife through the air.
"Look Soreli. I'm not in the mood to chat." Wynne snapped.
"Oh. Why, are you having fun wallowing?" She smiled.
"I mean it Soreli." Wynne bit.
"Really. I do suppose that you're new title is deserved. Prima Donna!" She scoffed.
"Well that's just fine! I'll be gone soon, and then you'll have the Title to yourself again."
"You're leaving?!" Soreli blinked.
"Yes." Wynne shot.
"Oh..." Soreli limped away awkwardly.
Wynne watched as everyone danced.
Everyone from the managers, to the smallest of the ballerina's, swayed on the floor. And it was just another thing that reminded her of how out of place she was here.
But it didn't matter she'd soon be going home. Tears streamed down her face as she bowed her head, staring at her silver toed shoes.
"A beautiful girl such as yourself should be dancing." A musical masculine voice remarked.
Wynne's eyes widened as she looked up at the man.
"Erik?!" She sniffled.
"Come."He extended his hand to her.
She took his hand as he lead her to the dance floor.
They swayed in silence for a while.
"I'm sorry I lied to you." Wynne whispered.
"I know."
They were quiet for a beat.
"Stay with me."
"Erik I can't." Wynne sighed. "You know I can't."
"But perhaps-"
"Erik I'd miss my family too much. Besides I have no control over this." Wynne looked down at her feet. "Can we please just enjoy the time we have left together?"
Erik nodded.
And the clock chimed twelve.
"No!" Erik exclaimed, as Wynne looked over at the doorway and saw her 'Sister.'
The angel-woman made her way briskly through the crowd, as they parted for her as if pushed by an invisible force.
She came and took Wynne's hand.
"We have to go." The woman announced.
"No please, let me say goodbye."
"We have to go now."
Erik grasped Wynne's wrist.
The woman gave a tug, and dragged Wynne out forcefully and with incredible speed.
Especially for a woman in heels.
"Wait please!" Wynne begged.
But the woman wouldn't listen, obstinately dragging Wynne down the stairs.
Wynne tossed a look back over her shoulders, and stretched out a hand to Erik.
He reached out too with a despondent look in his eyes.
There was a bright flash of light and Wynne was back in her bedroom.
"No! No!! Take me back."
"I'm sorry." The angel frowned. "This was the only way. I'm so sorry but I'll be back I promise!"
And in another flash of light the angel was gone.
Wynne stared at where the angel had been, and tears trickled down her face.
Then she noticed that the dress was beginning to fall apart. She watched as it dissolved into the air with a sparkle.
Unable to take it anymore, she threw herself onto the bed and sobbed.
