OVA 8 : Hospitals Suck
Ryan's Pov
Today was the day. After spending two months in a coma, I was finally going back into the outside world. David. Mom. I'm coming. I glanced at Jessica and sighed. "Seems I'm going to....". I blinked as I heard the sound of screaming from outside of the room. "Huh?" I stood up from the bed. I finally had on my regular clothes. I turned towards the door at the front of the room and looked past the girl named Jess. There was a bright light of open space in the middle of the hallway. Out of the bright hole of open space emerged grey skinned, white eyed, staggering people. They bit and tore on everyone they found. Doctors and nurses screamed and tried to keep some of the other patients in order, but that didn't work. What was I doing just standing there, watching it all happen, unable to move....just like before. I closed my eyes and heard the honking of a car horn. But when I opened them, there was no car, and the horrific scene was still happening. "WAKE UP," I shouted worriedly at Jess and closed the door.
Jess leaped up and the heart monitor began beeping at a rapid pace. "The hell is...?"
I shrugged. "Cannibals? I dunno. People were eating each other and I didn't want them coming in here." I locked the door and held it closed as loud bangs were heard from the other side along with screaming and what sounded like the tearing of flesh.
Jessica glanced as the lines connecting her to the machine. "Oh. This is gonna suck." She glanced at the bandages covering different parts of her body and sat up. "Fuck. That hurt a little."
I turned away for a few seconds to focus on holding the door and I heard her scream in intense pain.
"FUCK! GOD.....DAMN!" She was on the ground and was breathing heavily. Her face was contorted into a look of pain and her face was red.
I groaned as the door made a loud creaking sound. "Jess, I know you're in a lot of pain right now but.....".
"FUCK OFF!" She groaned.
"I'm sorry you're in pain but CANNIBALS ARE BANGING ON OUR DOOR!"
"You try getting pulled out of a window by a giant fucking monster and being thrown into a cave wall when it finally sets you down. And then before you've finished healing, you have to do something that really FUCKING hurts, and then you can ride that damn high horse." She grabbed the edge of the hospital bed and pulled herself to her feet. "There's only one door. If they get in, we're screwed."
I bit my lip as the banging got louder. "See if the windows open. We can climb onto the ledge and try and reach a safer room."
She gaped at me for a moment. "I have no shoes. And I'm hurting. And you want me t-".
"STOP COMPLAINING IF YOU DON'T WANNA DIE!"
Jessica huffed and began limping towards the window on the other side of the room. "If I fall 6 stories, I'm gonna kill you in the afterlife."
I hissed and stopped myself from saying a very rude comment. I wasn't like my little brother. I knew how to control my temper. Mostly.
Jessica leaned against the window and pushed outward. The window opened alright. "Come on." She glanced back at me.
I stopped leaning on the door and ran forward towards her. "Come on." I mocked.
"I'm trying!" She pulled herself up and onto the sill.
I heard the sound of heavy banging coming from the door behind us so I quickly pulled myself up after her.
She was gripping the wall tightly. "Just my day. I'm hurting. I don't have regular clothes on and just have this hospital gown. And on the time when I feel off balance, I have to not fall to my death with cannibals behind me."
"I'm sorry, your highness. Next time, I'll ask the cannibals if they want to come out first. Since they obviously need your permission. You have my permission to be quiet and stop complaining though."
Jessica took a second to glare at me as she neared the other window. "Seems your looks are the only thing cute about you. Your attitude ruins it." She pulled on the edge of the window until it opened.
I let out a breath of fresh air as she stepped inside and I quickly followed. Drama queen.
Jessica glanced around the room and let out a sigh. The room was empty and the door was open.
I grabbed Jessica's hand gently and led her towards the door quietly, not going too fast so that she wouldn't feel pained.
Jessica stared down the hall silently as we snuck past the cannibals still banging on our door.
I led her towards the elevators and tried to keep my breathing under control. "Okay. I think the elevators is the quickest way down. But is it the safest?" I whispered to her.
"How would I know?" She reached up to press the button for the nearest elevator.
I froze. When the elevator opens. It....
The elevator let out a loud ding as the doors opened partially.
I groaned and tried to push the doors open fully. "Come on." I heard the sound of growls and stumbling feet coming towards us. "Come on!" I tried harder to pry the doors open.
"This isn't the way we die. Fuck that." Jessica grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall. "I'll beat the shit out of you before I let you eat me."
I let go of the doors and let out a heavy sigh.
Jessica let go of her side and swung the extinguisher into the nearest one's head. There was a loud snapping sound as it's head was twisted around and it fell over. What the fuck? Jessica stumbled to her knees after the swing and let out a pained moan.
"Jess!" I turned my head as I heard a male voice call out from down the hall. A dark skinned boy was holding the door to the staircase open. He saw what was happening and ran forward towards her.
Jess gently lifted her head up from the floor as she crawled away from the cannibals with grey skin. "Matt?"
The dark boy named Matt pulled out a revolver from the red jacket he was wearing and held it up to a cannibal's head. He pulled the trigger and the cannibal stumbled backwards with a bullet hole in the middle of it's forehead. Blood flew out from the back of it's head before it fell to the floor. Matt pulled Jess up. "Come on, babe."
Jessica smiled at Matt and turned to me. "Over here, the real hero has arrived."
I frowned as I ran over behind Matt. It wasn't a competition. Jeez.
Matt aimed the revolver back at the cannibals. "Okay. You guys. Head to the roof. My...uh...mom is going to be arriving up there soon."
Jessica groaned. "More walking. And...your mom."
"Yes! My mom. Now please, go. I'll be right behind you."
Jessica got off of Matt and leaned on me. "Move it!"
I huffed. "Princess, I swear to God." I began walking towards the stairs as the sound of Matt firing into the cannibals was heard behind us. I pushed open the bright red door and sighed as we entered the hot staircase.
"It's h-".
"SHUSH." I pulled her along quickly and up the stairs.
"Did you just pull me? What if I wasn't ready? WHAT IF I FELL?" Her loud voice echoed through the staircase. "MATT!!!"
I groaned and covered my ears. Jessica let out a yelp and fell against the rail.
Jessica quivered with anger. "I...will go up myself." She stomped up each stair.
"I bet that feels great without shoes." I smiled up at her.
"Oh, fuck off." She glanced back at me. "And don't look up either."
"I have to look up in order to not fall down a flight of stairs."
"Well, don't look at me. Perv." Her face turned a light pink as she continued.
I frowned but didn't say anything. I didn't even think she'd ever shut up so I just pulled out my phone from my pants pocket. It was a small flip phone and only had my brother and parents in it as contacts. My emergency phone that I never used. I saw a text from my brother.
D: Ryan! Hello? I sent like 666 messages to ur other phone and u never answered. When you get this text, fucking ANSWER ME! If u don't I'll be waiting at the house.
I felt sick. Oops. That was sent an hour ago. "Jessica. I uh......when we get to the roof, I need to go."
Jessica didn't turn back as we neared the exit door to the roof. "Okay." She pushed herself forward and pushed the door open.
I didn't say anything and just followed her. The sound of a helicopter was what I heard as I held the door open for myself. A single black helicopter had landed on the roof. The door slid open and a brown woman in a bright red dress stepped out. She walked toward them in a pair of black high heels. Two guys dressed in black holding AK-47's were following behind her.
Jessica's eyes widened in recognition. "You're that woman from that TV show. Mary......Mire!"
Mary glanced at Jessica and smiled a big smile that spread across her entire face. "A fan. How nice." She turned to me and blinked slowly. "Hmm. I feel like I've seen you before. I can't remember where though." She tapped her chin with one of her fingers. "Well, doesn't matter now. Is my Mattie boy okay?"
Jessica nodded. "Yes. He's so brave. He even gave us extra time to escape by holding off the cannibals."
I didn't say anything while she said that. It seemed so fake. Her demeanor had changed entirely.
Mary nodded and glanced behind us both as the door opened.
Matt emerged with a boy leaning on his shoulder. "Hello. People of earth." He smiled and pulled the boy along.
Mary held her hand out. "And who is this?" Her voice was sweet.
The boy lifted his head up to look at Mary. "My name is Sebastian." His skin was tanned. Not a bright red color, but just the right shade to it. "Sebastian Garcia."
Matt chuckled. "He was about to get eaten by a bunch of...things. He told me some kid named Charlie sent him through a house window with his hand. He's been here for a few days."
I turned to Matt. "Charlie Washington? That dude Zeke's little brother?"
Sebastian nodded. "That's the one. Jeez. I was payed a lot of money to intimidate that kid and he sent me through a damn window using the force like he's from a Star Wars movie."
I frowned. At least I'd managed to save Charlie from that car. But......nevermind.
Mary sighed. "Fine. Since you happen to be here, and since my son seems to like all of you, you may come with us."
Matt frowned for a moment. "We also have to find Zeke. And Hannah. And a few other good friends of mine, mom."
Mary sighed. "If we find them, they can come with us. But that's only if they find us. You'll have to contact them. Your friends are not my responsibility. Anyone who wishes to accompany us now though, let's go." She turned as her phone began ringing. She answered. "Monica. How nice of you to call." She began walking with the two men with guns towards the helicopter.
Sebastian shook his head. "AK's. Jeez. What am I getting into." He got off of Matt and followed Mary.
Jessica stared after Sebastian and gave a little smile. She limped her way after the helicopter.
I turned to Matt. "I'm not coming with you guys. I need to find my brother. And my parents."
Matt peered over at me for a moment. "When you do, go to Marywood. That's where we'll be."
"Gonna tell me where?"
Matt shrugged. "I don't know where exactly. Give me your phone."
I handed it over.
Matt pressed a few buttons and then typed a number into the phone. "Here's my number. When you find your family, get to Marywood. Call the number, I'll give you the location of the building. All you'd need would be a map, but I'm sure you'll find one." He smiled and handed me the phone back.
"Thanks. I appreciate it. See ya, Mattie." I teased a little.
"Shush. Only my mom calls me that." He pouted for a moment and then held his fist out.
I bumped it and smiled. "Be safe."
"You too." He waved and ran off towards the helicopter.
I turned away and walked back over towards the exit door. I glanced back at the helicopter for a moment. Hmm. I grabbed the handle on the door and swung it open, stepping back into the hot staircase. I'm coming for you David, Mom. Please be safe. I'm coming home.
